We have just returned from a week in Montenegro staying at the Maestral with our 3 boys 11, 9 and 6. The hotel is in a fab location in a bay along from Budva and Sveti Stefan island. Stunning views if mountains and islands - great sunset shots!- and beautiful clear sea to swim in. The hotel is large but not too large and looks a lot better on the inside. Do not be put off by the concrete look of the outside that you see in many brochures!!
Rooms all very well appointed, good bathrooms, tv etc and well maintained and cleaned. Ask for a seaview rather than a garden or street view if you can as they are a bit noisy at night when people come out of restaurants.
A good size pool ( if you want to swim laps then go early in the morning before 10am you have it to yourself pretty much!) that is located in front of the hotel and looking also on to the beach. Lots of sun loungers available at both the pool area and on the beach. exclusive use for Maestral guests. no need to rush down at the crack of dawn to reserve a spot!!
Service in the hotel is sometimes patchy. The restaurant staff are good and the buffet breakfast caters for most tastes ( except lovers of scrambled egg!!) and the choice is wide. Coffee on the tables not worth drinking though. order an expresso or real coffee from the bar- it's worth paying extra for! The beach bar good for lunch snacks or burgers and icecreams aswell as drinks all day. Outside lounge bar also a great spot for watching the sun go down!
Reception staff are not always particularly helpful- there is a large russian presence 60-70% of the guests- and this oftens means that you are less of a priority when it comes to being helped. There are a lot of wealthy russians there who feel they are all VIPs and things like having all the good tables being constantly reserved for these people who never show was irritating, to say the least. What also happens as a result is that the hotel ,in my view, felt it could charge money ( not huge sums but it was the principle !!) for little things that should really have been part of the general amenities.eg empty basketball court that the kids wanted to play on without distubing anyone, and there was a charge for that and a pool table and ping pong table by the beach that could have provided hours of entertainment!!!
There are kayaks, pedalos and jetskis available for rent by the beach and whilst cheap for the pedalos and kayaks there was no flexabilty to rent jetskis for less than an hour. Perhaps if i spoke russian ??!!
There is a very good and frequent local bus service to Budva that goes from outside hotel and only costs 1 euro so that you can see the old town. also there is parasailing available on the beach which is GREAT fun if you've never tried it!! Food not great in Budva tho'
There is a lovely walk from the hotel through a park to Milocer and you end up in Sveti Stefan itself although the island is closed at the moment as they are renovating the hotel there.
There are some good restaurants on the beach front by the Maestral especially Languste (£££) and the pizza place (£)
All in all Maestral is good but just be aware of the extras that you will find yourself paying for and the nationality of the guests. not many english or american guests. The staff all speak pretty good english though- good if your Serbo-Croat not up to scratch!!
