“WOW !!!”
Reviewed May 27, 2013

Since that my husband and I have decided to celebrate our honeymoon in Perast, we stayed in wonderful hotel Per Astra which had a view to the Our lady of the rock. The hotel staff have organized trip to the island with tour guide. We have really enjoyed listening the story about this magnificent island. We especially liked the romantic/sad story about a embroidery which was created by one lady from Perast - she was expecting her husband (who was a sailor) to come back from the sea, and while she was waiting she created a picture of Madonna with her own hair that took 20 years! Her husband never come back and she got blind... It is really special place and worth to go!

“The Church of Our Lady of the Rocks, Kotor, Montenegro”
Reviewed May 20, 2013

There is so much to do while in the Bay of Kotor. We swam in Perast, had a lunch there, visited a town museum and then took a short boat ride to the beautiful Church of Our Lady of the Rocks. It is located on one of the two island in the Bay (another island has a Benedictine monastery). The story goes that sometime in the 15th century (July 22nd, 1452) native sailors from Perast found an image of the Virgin Mary on the rock in the sea. Since then after coming back from each voyage they laid a rock in the Bay till the small island created by these rocks emerged from under the water. The custom of throwing rocks into the sea every year on July 22nd is still alive among the native residents. The church on the island started as Serbian Orthodox but then it was taken over by the Romans and the Catholic church that we see nowadays was built. There are many wonderful icons inside the church including Our Lady of the Rocks by Lovro Dobricevic of Kotor. I posted more photos on my travel blog if you'd like to see http://russiangirlinthisworld.com/?p=5977 Enjoy your visit to Montenegro, it is a gorgeous country!

“Well worth the trip”
Reviewed May 19, 2013

This is a beautiful little man made island a few minutes boat ride from Perast. It is well worth the trip, it has a little church and museum. Our guide was so informative and interesting. The locals are so proud of this and all the legends surrounding it.

“Well worth the visit”

From the short water taxi ride across to the church and the church itself, it is well worth it. After seeing some magnificent churches recently such as the Sevilla Cathedral, this one is beautiful in itself. The guide there provides some very interesting and helpful history - short but insightful. Enjoy the church's history and the view back to Perast is to die for. It is a picture postcard view. You really should make the trip.
