“Great location and service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2014

Hotel Perla is a great place to stay while exploring the beautiful Boka Bay. The hotel is right by the sea and the long promenade that leads all the way to the medieval city of Herceg Novi, some 15 minutes of leisurely walk. It is quiet and breezy, both great assets in the area. It has a good beach, both with small pebbles and concrete areas with beds. Monastery Savina is right above the hotel, well worth a short walk for its views. While here, you should also visit beautiful Kotor and Dubrovnik, both only 1 hour by car.

Hotel is right at the ocean, around 15 min foot walk to the old city. Free wifi. Food was buffet style and was very tasty! If you depart from DBV airport, plan enough time for controls at the border.... and get gas in Montenegro since it is cheaper!

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 3, 2014

I was really skeptical about booking anything in Montenegro considering that Montenegrins are “famous” for being “macho” and this is all it matters :-). In the past, I experienced unfriendly, rude and arrogant people working in hotels and restaurants, especially in Budva. Herceg Novi feels like another country with friendly and nice locals.
If you are like me, give Perla a chance, I simply couldn’t believe the difference and asked to meet the owner of this boutique hotel to find out what his secrets are to make this place impeccable. Very nice and classy gentleman I must say.

SERVICE: First of all, I would like to thank Ana, who accommodated all our booking requests in advance. I e-mailed her from Canada and got exactly what we were looking for: oceanfront room in the main building. Service in this hotel is out of this world. This hotel is a 4 star, but I would rate their service 5 or even 6. Everyone, including the reception, bar tenders, waiters, beach guys, cleaning ladies, supervisors, etc. are going out of their way to make your stay special. They are kind, professional, hard working, pleasant, accommodating and absolutely amazing.

My favorite person was Luka, the beach guy. Before you know it, he will fix up the umbrella for you, make your chair comfortable and bring your morning coffee. He remembers every single person, who wants what, how you take your coffee, do you prefer drinks with or without ice…..I was really impressed. You would think that there are several guys working how well organized he is, but no, it is just him. Another individual whom I would like to mention is the kitchen guy (can’t remember his name, skinny guy from Bosnia) who is there for any questions you may have about your meal, nice touch, when you are at the buffet, he puts the soup in your plate and takes it to your table. Another person to mention is Milovan, the supervisor who has his eyes wide open and does not miss anything! Like former KGB from the movies (just kidding :-)). He is on top of his team and they run like a Swiss clock indeed. I read the review that the wait staff was unpleasant, not sure if this was in the past, but I must say that they were all absolutely amazing. Be nice and you will be treated like royalty.

FOOD: The food is excellent. I know how expensive it is to purchase quality ingredients and most hotels try to cheat with their leftovers. Not Perla. You would think they get it all for free how amazing the food was. There are not that many options like in big hotels, but what they serve is fresh, tasty, finger licking food and you will go for repeats for sure.

BEACH: It is not a pebble or sand beach but rather a concrete pier and deep water beach. If you are not a good swimmer you may find it challenging. Personally, I loved it. You are provided with towels, beach chairs and umbrellas. If you wake up early in the morning, you will be watching cruise ships passing by on their way to Kotor. There were days when the water was clean and great for swimming and days when the wind was blowing some dirt against the shore. But this is anywhere in Montenegro. You can catch a boat to Zanjic beach (great day trip for a few euros) right in front of Perla, they leave at 10 am and come back around 6 pm.

LOCATION: Perla is located right on the beach, you can hear the sea from your balcony. This is the best location in Herceg Novi called Savina (I do not recommend staying in the city centre, beaches are dirty and busy). After dinner, go towards your right from the hotel along Setaliste Pet Danica to the city centre and have the best ice cream at Do-Do Caffe. It is about 20 min walk by the water, really enjoyable. Or, walk up the street to Savina Monastery.

PARKING: If you are driving, this might be an issue for you, especially if you come from the western world. Road turning to Perla is steep and narrow; you need to be really skilled to squeeze so close to the walls and other cars.

GUESTS: Majority of the guests are Russians, I would say 80-90% at the time when we were there (end of June, 2014). No complains there, really nice families, well behaved and friendly.

ROOM: Rooms and bathrooms are relatively small, however, you are normally there just to sleep so who cares. What matters to me is that the quality is great: comfortable beds, clean sheets, good working A/C, drinks in the fridge (expensive though). Wi-fi worked really well in the room, by the beach signal was off and on.

We had half board and it is well worth it. Breakfast and dinner included, you pay extra for drinks (coffee and juice in the morning are included as well). It is expensive to eat out in Montenegro so I find this option really great.

Tips:

I recommend renting a car and exploring surrounding areas:

· Make a day trip to Virpazar and visit Skadar Lake. Take a tour with the Boat Milica (see my other review). It was the highlight of our trip. Don’t go with agencies, rent a car and drive to Virpazar, ask for Jelena or Andrija Dabanovic (they own Boat Milica), you get the boat to yourself and experience you will remember forever. You can reach Jelena at +382-68-702-376. Check them out on Tripadvisor as well.

· Visit Ostrog Monastery but avoid weekends when hordes of tourists come from other countries. Stop by restaurant Konoba on the way to Ostrog and ask for one of the local dishes “jagnjetina ispod sacha”, if you like lamb. It is absolutely amazing.

· Go to Dubrovnik (Croatia), it is about one hour drive or you can catch a bus from the main bus station if you don’t feel like spending hours looking for parking in Dubrovnik. We drove there and regretted later; if you think roads are narrow around Perla, wait until you get to Dubrovnik J. If you are driving, take the smaller road M516 instead of E80. We didn’t listen to this advice and had to wait at the border. M516 has goats and ships crossing and some cars here and thereJ.

· Explore Trebinje, cute little stone town in Bosnia and Herzegovina, about one hour drive from Herceg Novi. Stay overnight in Hotel Platani and enjoy your breakfast while overlooking the market. Go to Tvrdos Monastery, it is really special. Visit Vukoje vinery for the best wine in the region. Drive up to Hercegovacka Gracanica (5 min), beautiful church on top of the hill where the poet Jovan Ducic remains were moved from the US.

Overall, great hotel and if we go back to Herceg Novi, hotel Perla is certainly our choice number one. I almost changed my mind after reading one of the older reviews, but I am so glad we decided to give Perla a chance. Person who wrote this review perhaps have had bad luck or she/he is really difficult to please. I misplaced my book one day and every single employee in the restaurant was searching for it, to the point that I was uncomfortable making them run around so much…..

Room Tip: Sea facing room in the main building.

The location of the hotel Perla is bit far from the centre, 15-20 minutes walking along the boulevard. But thanks this location, we enjoyed peaceful stay, among old villas with local inhabitants. The view from balcony was beautiful, the staff very friendly and polite and we have very good memories from dinner and breakfast, served on the restaurant terrace. The one thing, I can complain is the size of the room. For the longer stay it could be too small. The price 88 € for DBL, including dinner for two, seems to be very attractive.

Room Tip: With the sea view, it`s a must

We stayed one night at the hotel Perla. The room was nice with a sea view. The hotel is conveniently located if you like a short walk to the centre (about 15 minutes). The room was clean and the staff was welcoming. The price was OK.

The hotel room was nice, with 2 double beds. It was comfortable and quite modern although the breakfast was not great.

Only problem was that there was road works on the road to town which meant that we could not take the car in the evening as town center is 20 minutes walk away.

Overall, good hotel
