“To Visit!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 24, 2013

One of historical restaurants from Iasi.
It's located in a very nice area, near the center of the city.
You can have a coffee outside or have a lunch/dinner inside or in the basement(yeah, awesome in the hot days of summer)
Food is great and they have a very nice selection of traditional/home made wines.

Should be visited by anyone who comes in town.

“This is the place to come for sarmale.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 8, 2013

Sarmale, stuffed vine leaves or stuffed cabbage, is the national dish of Romania. Of course, variations of the dish can be found all over the Balkans and in Mediterranean countries. Bolta Rece serves sarmale with the traditional mamaliga, boiled maize. Now I have to admit that I am not a great fan of mamaliga, or polenta, which is peasant food, designed to fill you up. But with sarmale it seems just the right combination. The prices are extremely reasonable. The waitresses, jolly and middle-aged, have even been known to smile. The wine list is adequate. In winter there is a cellar room. In summer you can sit outside on concrete.

Bolta Rece is in a street which runs parallel with Independentei, one of the main thoroughfares of Iasi. Nearly opposite is another restaurant which is rather more up-market and might even be described as slightly pretentious, a place for business discussions, perhaps. It also serves sarmale. Bolta Rece is more authentic.

“It used to be great. I can't say the same thing today...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 25, 2013

I recently visited Bolta Rece restaurant. The ambient is still very pleasant and the personal helpful and nice. The food is good, but not amazing. You could expect a little more from a place with tradition like Bolta Rece. The lack of investment is obvious in the ground floor of the restaurant which is definately not adapted to how a restaurant should look today. The basement level look wonderful though.

With a little bit of effort Bolta Rece could become what it used to be, but still, i recommend it if you travel to Iasi. It is a part of the culture of this town and shouldn't be missed.

“Romanian flavor - my prefered restaurant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 21, 2013

Additional to the good Romanian traditional food, in the evenings there is a music band playing Romanian and other popular music.

Excellent for first time visitors of Iasi.
