The town is small and you can take a taxi form Ica for 5 soles or 7 soles at night.
But it is worth it the views from the dunes are one of a kind and the buggy tours and sand boarding are fun.
The area is not cheap and dorm rooms cost 30 soles each roughly or 60 soles for a room and 30 soles for a main.
But a day or two is good enough here, don't miss it if your travelling near Lima, Arequipa or Cusco.

We stopped off here for three nights on our way to Cusco. It is really pretty, but only there for tourists so a bit pricey.

You can go sand buggying and sandboarding, I highly recommend that you do! It is lots of fun.

The party goes on in most hotels all night and it i good fun. However there is not that much to do during the day so by the last day we were a bit bored, espeically as all busses to Cusco are in the evening so we were stuck with our bags all day trying to entertain ourselves!

I've never seen a place like Huacachina before. We only heard about it from a friend who had been here many years ago so thought we'd stop by. It's really beautiful. I recommend going out early in the morning and renting a sandboard from one of the women on the street (3 soles for an hour) and getting some practice in on the dunes whilst they're empty and before the sun gets too strong. It's really peaceful and tranquil.

Huacachina is a pretty little oasis in the middle of e Peruvian desert, and a much better place to stay the night in than Ica, which came across as a little dodgy. No need to make hotel reservations in advance as there were many available rooms even in summer. Just walk into a hostel/hotel of your choice and ask for rooms.

When in Huacachina, you'll want to go dune-buggying and sand boarding, which is what everyone who comes here do. We bought the standard dune buggy tour from Jaime Travels, located in a corner of Huacachina and facing the lake, for 35 soles. Some of the other travel agents operate buggy tours for 12 or 20 persons per buggy. Jaime Travels uses 8-seater buggies, which is more comfortable and less rowdy than the larger buggies. I don't know if this is the norm but we were asked to pay an additional 3.50 soles per person as admission fee to the dunes. We saw many people climbing up the dunes on their own without having to pay this fee. We weren't issued a ticket either so this could be something the tour guide pocketed.
