“Casa de Hof!”
Reviewed June 6, 2013

I’ve been backwards and forwards to the Hof throughout my Peru experience, I found the Hof to be a warm and caring hostel, with a real connection to Mother Earth. The food at the Hof is amazing, it’s a clear example in how to turn Love into food for consumption, and is just what you need after a big day in the mountains. I recommend this hostel to people of all agers, and I look forward to seeing the Hof’s natural building projects in the future. INLAKESH! Luke Australian

I had the chance to chill out at the Hof off and on through the months of April and May and had a terrific time there! It's probably the best option in all of the Huaraz area as a base-camp for access to Huascaran National Park. They are positioned particularly well for access to the Laguna Churup day hike and day or overnight trips into the Cojup Valley. Good prices for what it is. Rooms are simple and cozy--warm down blankets. There's a chill common area for hanging out, reading, playing games, or making art (just ask for some supplies). The guy who runs the place, Chris, is great guy with an interesting story--he and Joey (the volunteer while I was there) do a great job of making you feel at home. Better food up in the mountains there than anywhere I ate in Huaraz (which may not be saying much because I like to eat cheap). Another cool thing is that The Hof is a non-profit hostel--proceeds go to support the NGO Ka'Way Monti (kawaymonti.org). Not sure, but that may be why they seem to have good relations with the local indigenous people who regularly pass by with their sheep and cows. All around just a really special place.

Getting there is a bit like ascending out of the world of men and into a land that time forgot. You have the option of an inexpensive collective from Huaraz or the more adventurous (and arduous) hike up a winding staircase that cuts through a couple small pueblos before merging with the road near the destination. But the trip is more than worth the effort because of the magic of the place and the community. Chris and Anna are both wonderful and very hospitable, but little Chiefy the cat is responsible for guided hikes of the area. And the place defies description. Nestled in the knee (too high up to be the foot) of the Cordilleras Blancas, the Hof has stunning views, a glacial stream and a growing garden. A great spot to get comfy and lose track of time, with a great selection in the on-site library.

Just kidding about the Fitness center and the glacial stream is the "pool".

I only planned on being at the Hof for two weeks, which then turned into two months as I quickly realized that I was in a very special place with the kind of people I've been looking for my entire trip to Peru! Accommodations are sweet, simple and homey, which is pretty much how life at the Hof is in general. Plenty of day hikes or longer available right outside your front door if you're a hiker, plenty of big rocks with flat tops and a great view if you're looking for a place to do yoga, meditate, read a book, or play with an adorable trickster kitten/fierce fighter named Chiefy. Eucalyptus trees abound to hang a hammock or camp out, a canal full of glacial runoff on the side of the house fills the background of life with the dull roar of a living stream. The landscape will transform your sense of life and time--beautiful, celestial blue mountains in the morning when the sky is clear, double rainbows streaming down to kiss the grasslands after a rainshower, and stars so big at night you could reach up and feel them vibrate with light. Chris, the owner, is awesome and hands-down one of the most interesting people I've ever met, and will entertain you with his crazy life stories across a cozy night time campfire if you so please. I will remember this lovely place always!

Being in the Hof was the beginning of one of the best advnther in my life, meeting great people, experienced sustainable life, great talks with Chris, enjoying Anna great Peruvian food. Being close to the powerful Andean mountain and hiking all around to the beautiful lagoon and lakes.

If you are really looking for advnther and want to enjoy some magic in the mountain, the Hof is the place, at least for me. :)
