“Decent enough stay”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2012

The hotel's best feature is its pool, in my humble opinion. The hotel grounds are nice and quiet, and it's located right by the oasis. You can have dinner on the terrace at night overlooking this wonderful man-made, restful haven. The pool is on the opposite side of the street, is quite large and well-maintained.

Breakfast was great and there was a lot to choose from. The room was average, nothing more, nothing less. It was spacious enough, but minimally furnished and the shower had its fits every now and again. During our three weeks in Peru, this hotel's staff was the most unfriendly. Check-in and check-out was not a very pleasant affair.

Been traveling thru Peru and comparatively this hotel is "better" and definitely more expensive. We stayed in room number 20 which backed onto the main street where music blasts till all hours of the night...so be warned, without earplugs it would be difficult to sleep. The service at the desk was very helpful despite not speaking English very well. They set us up with a reliable tour company called Pelican Travel & Services (which I would highly recommend... Ask for Boris). Overall a good stay in Huacachina with Hotel Mossone.

This hotel is like being set back in time with the huge courtyard, birds, turtles and quiet atmosphere. I agree with previous reviewers, it has seen better days and needs some paint, redecorating and upgrading , - but it is so charming and the location is just perfect. We loved it when we were there in April 2012.

The rooms were clean, had air conditioner, hot water and the hotel staff were very serviceminded and helpful. The free Pisco sour in the bar was tasty, but the barman could have been friendlier and maybe put a smile on his face!

We had lunch at the hotel on the day we were leaving, which was good! Sitting on the balcony overlooking the oasis was just perfect!

The pool area was great, though the water was pretty cold and refreshing.

We had dinner in a nearby Italian restaurant, which was very good. Garlic bread, pizza, sangria etc. were consumed with great delight.

We also enjoyed the small shops in Huacachina and ended up with bracelets, snacks and more.

Interesting place... Manmade oasis. Sandboarding and sand-dune Buggy rides are action packed. The rest of the oasis slow... Watch out for food. Had a vegetarian dish with mushrooms and got some kind of thing from it. Otherwise, ok standard. Not more. Not less.

Stayed for 1 night while on the way to Nazca. The hotel certainly has a charm about it. I actually liked the ambience of the place, even though I must admit the rooms have seen far better days. If you can forget about European style hotels, this has a lot to offer. The central courtyard gives the place a good feel, with chairs outside the rooms under the covered archways. I sat outside very early in the morning at sunrise and listened to the sound of all the birds singing which was very memorable. The previous sunset was also incredible with the sky a vibrant orange behind the huge sand dunes surrounding this area. The restaraunt was also very relaxing with an outside seating area overlooking the Huacachina oasis. I climbed to the top of one of the smaller sand dunes and looked down over the hotel, oasis and surrounding restaraunts and small shops which was also worthwile. If you can accept the tiredness off the rooms, I would certainly recommend this hotel. If I ever return to Ica, I will be sure to stay here again.

Me & my fiancee stayed in the Mossone during our trip to Peru in Feb 2011. We went to Peru to visit my Fiancee's family in Trujillo and on the way back stayed 3 days in Huacachina. We didnt book anything in advance, just taxied into Huacachina from Ica and walked around to afew Hotels. We visted 2 hotels initially and they were approx. 100 Sol. per night - which was fine. The 3rd Hotel was Hotel Mossone - and we immediately fell in love with its massive open courtyard, views of the dunes, spacious rooms and English speaking staff! We dived right into it, at 100 Sol. per night, who could say no.. it was SO much bigger and better than anything that Huacachina had to offer.

Little did i know, we were actually paying $100US - we only realised on the 2nd night in. We were shocked, not that we were led astray by the staff at any point, i remember him saying Dollars, but 6 weeks using Soles - we kinda just let the word dollar run over our heads. So at approx. 300 Sol. we were staying in an amazing hotel.

The rooms are quite big and spacious, a sitting area, clean bathroom, king size bed with Cable TV in Spanish & English (which was a delight for me who was only new to spanish, my finacee is Peruvian... she was fine). The bed was very comfy and clean, freshly made daily with new sheets.

We used the pool (which is adjacent to the hotel) in the evening, which was fantastic - it was late at night and it only had 1 small light, which made it kind of spooky, but the reflection of the bright stars made it worth it.

Buffet Breakfast daily - which was an absolute treat! Especially when they were serving Western Style breakfast (not just Pan e Jugo [bread with butter & juice]) - but Eggs, Bacon, Croissants, Tea, Coffee... Life. But 2 mornings out of 3 we missed out because the beds were so comfy we couldnt get up in time!

There is a small problem with mosquitoes - they provide a plugin mosquito repelant device - but 1 of the 3 nights i got absolutely hammered by the suckers.

Obviously not their fault, having a hotel in a Oasis (stagnant water) brings its challenges, but they do handle it very well.

They also assisted with 2 Tours that we went on (Sand Duneing & the Tour of the Ilsa del Ballestas... if you do this... bring something to cover your nose... the Island has about a million birds all over it... and smells like crap... literally)

They also have bikes you can hire... for free. So we rode around Huacachina - dodging people like a boss.

Overall; amazing place to stay, the staff is very knowledgable speaking both Spanish & English (he is originally from the US) and the rooms are incredible.

Room Tip: We had a room that was away from the road - it was very quiet - but afew nights there were parties g...

There is no doubt that the Hotel Mossone has seen better days. They were probably in the Forties, which is when most of the decor seems to date from. The paving in the central courtyard is a personal accident claim waiting to happen, being very uneven.

But for sheer quirkiness, the Mossone knocked every other hotel we stayed in during our visit to Peru into a cocked hat. The place is stuck in a time warp. That may explain why it was so empty when we were there. I think that of the sixty-odd rooms, four were occupied. We were given a voucher for a free pisco sour when we checked in, and when we went to the bar to redeem it we could only raise any service by knocking on the bar and shouting "Hola!" three or four times.

Our room was large, with a real period charm. Everything worked. The beds were large and comfortable. In the morning we had breakfast on the terrace, and the view of the lagoon in the early sunshine, with the dunes towering behind it, was splendid. We used the pool later, and couldn't fault it. They were happy to serve us lunch there, and it was very good.

One of two things will happen to the Mossone. Either the low occupancy levels will finally do for it, or else someone will buy it up and do a Raffles on it. I would really like to go back there if that happens, but I suspect that by then the prices will have gone through the roof.

Room Tip: See if you can get a suite; if they're not very full you may well get one at no extra cost.
