“Outstanding!”
Reviewed September 28, 2009

We had been traveling through Equador and Peru for almost 2 weeks sightseeing by the time we got to the Sumaq Hotel. The day we arrived, we had spent a better part of it in Machu Piccu so we were definitely ready for a rest. Our stay began with a very warm welcome and, while they were completely attentive, the staff allowed us time to unwind and relax in their beautiful lobby (providing free drinks and snacks too!). The rooms were wonderful and the restaurant in the hotel was one of the best we went to on our vacation. Anything we needed assistance with, the staff was ready and willing. I would highly recommend checking this hotel out!

We recently stayed at the Sumaq Machu Picchu hotel as part of our three week honeymoon trip to South America. The hotel was booked as an overnight stop for our trip to Machu Picchu and quite honestly we thought it was just going to be a place where we could get our head down for the night. We were in for a surprise!

We were met by hotel staff as we disembarked from the Hiram Bingham train (a fantastic way to arrive by the way!) and our luggage was sent ahead of us to the hotel as we went straight into our Machu Picchu tour. After the tour had concluded we were dropped at our hotel so we could check in. We were greeted by extremely friendly front desk staff who had obviously been briefed that it was our honeymoon when we gave them our names. Bless them - they seemed almost more excited than we were! We were asked to sit in the lobby whilst the check-in formalities were completed. We were given complimentary drinks of chilled passion fruit juice and homemade andean potato chips with a dip. We were given a thorough explanation of the hotel services and were presented with a map of the town and shown how to get to the town centre on foot. Easily the best check-in process of any hotel we stayed at during our trip.

We were shown to our room which was on the 3rd floor with a view overlooking the Urubamba river. The room was very large and spotlessly clean. The hotel had also provided a honeymoon welcome gift which was much appreciated. As dinner was included in our rate, we ate in the hotel restaurant and had a very good meal. The waiting staff could not have been more helpful. As an aside, we ordered gin and tonics as an aperitif and were somewhat surprised when our heads nearly blew off after a large mouthful of neat gin. We think the young guy serving us was being trained and he was mortified by his mistake. The manager could not have been more apologetic as we were presented with a large jug of tonic water. The way they handled this small incident was indicative to us of the premium they place on good customer service.

The following morning we enjoyed the excellent buffet breakfast and asked the front desk to sort out return tickets to Machu Picchu. They front desk arranged for one of the buses to collect us from outside the hotel. All done with the minimum of fuss. Returning from our second trip to Machu Picchu we asked if we could take a shower and were shown to the spa where we were given sole use of it whilst we freshened up and changed. We were given first class treatment even though we had already checked out.

We can't praise the staff at this hotel highly enough. For a hotel that we didn't really expect much from (given it was a mandatory overnight stop for our Machu Picchu visit) we ended up having probably the best hotel experience of any of the hotels we stayed in across Peru and Brazil. Well done to the staff and I couldn't recommend highly enough.

By the way - we were pleased we hadn't stayed at the hotel at the top of the mountain overlooking Machu Picchu (the Sanctuary Lodge). We had lunch at the hotel as part of our Hiram Bingham trip and it was very good. However, once the sun goes down you are kind of limited as to what you can do (confirmed to us by guests we spoke to who had stayed there). We were much happier having been at the foot of the mountain near the small town and enjoyed a good night out strolling around the area, browsing the craft stalls and stopping for a few drinks along the way.

The Sumaq was quite new when we stayed in Jan 08 but there were no teething problems. Everything was spotless, the room was spacious, including the bathroom (unlike a lot of hotels where the bathrooms are as big as a closet). We had a great view of the river looking back up to the town. We only had breakfast at the hotel but if the quality of the breakfast was any indication we should have dinner there as well. Also, my wife was taken with the pisco sour served in the bar with the intention of sampling this drink through Sth America. The Sumaq was only a short walk to the centre of town, which mainly had shop stalls and food places.
We were upset we had to leave the Sumaq because that was our last bit of luxury for some time.
If you want a little a little bit of luxury, this is the place.
The Sumaq was a great gateway to Macchu Picchu ... but that's another story.

My wife and I were on our honeymoon to Machu Picchu this September and Hotel Sumaq certainly made it sweeter than what we thought it turned out to be. Please remember future Mahcu Picchu visitors that this visit will not be the same as relaxing at the pool with a drink in your hand since it entails quite a bit of hiking. Thus, it is imperative that you choose your hotel accommodation wisely to give your body adequate rest every night you spend there. We felt that our choice of Hotel Sumaq in this regards was just perfect. Hotel Sumaq is a resonably priced classy hotel with very comfortable rooms and great staff, who are always willing to help you. The food at this hotel is just out of this world and the bar is not too shabby either. Overall what sets this hotel apart is its staff. One day we were late of dinner and even then the restaurant staff not only accommodated us but a couple of our friends. In the process the restaurant staff had to stay back over hours past its closing time. So far we have had such service at a very few hotels. Both my wife and I have travelled a bit and we do like to stay in nice hotels but in our books Sumaq's staff's warmth and professionalism are so far unmatched. Even on our way out of Machu Picchu a Sumaq staff member negotiated our luggage fees with Peru Rail and brought it down to half of what we were initally asked to pay.

I would highly recommend this hotel to all my friends and family. Also, do get in touch with the Sumaq's marketing (Karla Lau) before you do your booking with the hotel. Once you do so you you will know that you are in great hands.

Good luck visiting Machu Picchu

Sumaq Machu Picchu was one of the best hotels my friends and I have stayed at. The rooms are excellent - clean, comfortable and modern, with all amenities a tired traveler would want to find. The food, superb and the staff was amazingly kind - carrying our baggage to and from the train station, ready to help. Our room windows opened to a private garden, very beautiful and relaxing. I certainly recommend it if you decide to travel to the Incas most amazing historical site.

I was awed from beginning to end with Hotel Sumaq. From the check in to check out the hotel is A+ . Check in was fast and easy, the rooms were big, modern clean and with a beautiful view.

It was so nice and relaxing after a long day in the sun in Machu Pichu. Our stay included the dinner (which I believe was the case for many) and it was fantastic. The service was great, food delicious. Overall a plesant stay. The hotel was well worth the money and quite reasonable for a hotel in Peru.

The Sumaq is in a touristy area and would have many guests stay for just one night. That did not have any impact on the staff, who made you feel special and welcome and made an effort to know us by our names. Our room was new, spacious and spotlessly clean with an unbelievable view. The food in the restaurant was the best we have had on our South American tour and was beautifully served by friendly staff who had a good understanding of English. The staff were clearly very proud of their restaurant. The setting in Aqua Calientes is stunning and a wonderful gateway to Machu Picchu. Do not even think about staying on the mountain. We are sure this short stay will be a highlight of our trip.
