“Stunning location on the banks of a raging river”
Reviewed January 12, 2014

We arrived in Macchu Picchu with our dream of visiting the Inca Site. The route is onerous - a bus from Cusco followed by a train to the town at the base of the mountain. Thereafter buses carry visitors to the site on the top of the mountain. Sadly the day of our arrival, a massive landslide prevented buses from taking visitors to the site. We needed to cancel our reservation at the Sanctuary Hotel, the only place to stay at the site of the ruins and find other accommodation.
We were escorted to the Sumaq Hotel where we stayed for two nights. The staff were incredibly helpful and efficient and allowed us a late check out . The rooms overlook the Urubamba river which was a raging torrent ,flowing through a deep gorge between sheer mountain cliffs. The food was excellent, with interesting combinations and beautifully presented. We were presented with a delicious tray of pastries on our arrival as a measure of sympathy for our plight. Highly recommended the price includes breakfast, dinner, afternoon tea and a free Pisco Sour

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the river if you don't mind the sound

It's a very good hotel with some aspects which need to be improved. The menu of the restaurant should be more rich and varied. The room was decorated in inca style and very clean and the staff ready to satisfy our requests. We enjoyed very relaxing massages in the spa. A special mention and thanks to Mr. Roberto Alvarez, the very nice and professional Sumaq guide who led us in the extraordinary tour of Macchu Picchu. We definitely would come back to the Sumaq hotel.

We stayed here one night as part of a Cusco, Machu Picchu package and were very pleased. Someone met us at the train station and whisked our luggage away while we followed our guide to a bus that took us up the hill to Machu Picchu. Later that evening, when we got to the hotel we were given a snack while waiting to be checked in, a process which was fast and efficient. Our room was large and sparsely furnished but comfortable. There was a slight insect repellent smell, but we saw no bugs, so that's the trade off. Everyone mentions the noise from the river, but it is the main feature of the town, so you hear it everywhere. I'm a light sleeper and the only time I woke up is in the early morning when the train went through on the other side of the hotel. The food was very good and plentiful. There was a large group from a Princess Cruise while we were there which affected our dining hour choice, but the staff did a wonderful job serving us despite the crowd. The breakfast buffet was large and also tasty. We left our bag with the front desk when we checked out, telling them what train we would be taking back to Cusco, and left for another day at Machu Picchu. When we returned to the train station that afternoon a representative from the hotel was at the station with our bag, so we had very good and friendly service.

Room Tip: Ask for the river side; constant white noise is better than the train!

The hotel is literally at the end of town nearest the road that goes to Machu Picchu. On one side is the road and across the road is the river. The otherside has the train tracks. There was not air conditioning so if you opened the windows, you were exposed to any noise (train) and insects from the outside. We requested a fan which they delivered promptly to our room which made our one night stay acceptable from a climate control standpoint. The noise from the train did wake us up early the next morning but that was ok since we got up early anyway to do the morning visit to Machu Picchu. Since we kept the windows closed, insects weren't a problem but the hotel provided Insect Repellent capsules that are plugged into the electrical outlet.

The hotel food seemed great with a nice selection but we suspect it may have been the cause of some indigestion my wife experience a day later.

Room Tip: Ask for a Room facing the River. You might get some incidental noise from the shuttle buses but the...

This was by far our favorite stay in our two week trip to Peru. Everything about it was 5 star and we were constantly surprised by how helpful everyone was. They knew us by name when we arrived, managed our itinerary, gave us a wake-up call to get us to Machu Picchu even though we forgot to request it, and the food was amazing. In my opinion the price wasn't for the room, it was for everything else. We could have slept on a cot outside and it still would have been completely worth it with all that the staff did to make our trip perfect. Having them buy our tickets and bus passes and have the bus pick us up simplified our day tremendously and was yet another perk that allowed us to relax that much more.

The food deserves special mention. Their ceviche was the best I tasted in Peru, not even the "best" I could find in Lima measured up. We looked forward to dinner almost all day long and every time we were impressed and could not remember a better meal even when comparing to extravagant dining experiences in the US.

A word on the negative reviews. While some people may have had bad experiences I'd believe they are very isolated. I also think some people may stay at this property with unrealistic expectations. Yes, there is a train that runs through the town. No hotel in Aguas Calientes will be immune from it. The road runs next to the hotel as well and buses make noise but again if you stay in this town you will not find a place where this is not the case. I was nervous reading the negative reviews about the noise because I am a very light sleeper but had absolutely no problems getting a full night sleep. The trains and buses stop and start to allow sleep unless you want to sleep in (I was happy to be awakened for sunrise at Machu Picchu everyday).

In our three nights here we found not one thing to complain of and a multitude to compliment. Congratulations to Sumaq on a beautiful property, an amazing chef, and some of the best hotel staff I've ever interacted with.

We stayed here one night while visiting Machu Picchu. What a beautiful hotel. Impeccably decorated, very rustic and traditional while still feeling luxurious. The hotel rate included an incredible breakfast and dinner which were both delicious. Our room opened up to a gorgeous view of the mountains and the river. The staff people were excellent, very friendly and accommodating. We brought our two year old daughter and they gave us a beautiful crib for her- much more comfortable than those in mainstream American hotels. The location was excellent, right at the bottom of the mountain that leads up to Machu Picchu, but close enough to walk to the small town for exploring in the evening or before the train trip back. They also came to meet us at the train station and brought our bags to and from the station. Wonderful service and a beautiful place!

We really enjoyed the ambiance and hospitality of Sumaq. The staff was friendly, with a delicious assortment of dishes at the dinner and breakfast meals. They were especially accommodating as we had four vegans with us. The rooms were comfortable, with all of the usual amenities expected in a superior property. The location at the foot of Machu Picchu was very convenient. It is in walking distance to the center of Aguas Calientes, a lovely town to walk around after or before boarding the bus to Machu Picchu.
