Before we traveled to Aguas Calientes, we looked at the TripAdvisor hotel reviews. We were not very impressed with reviews for the El MaPi Inn. I asked our travel company to change the hotel, but everyone was sold out, so we took the risk.
We were very pleased with the hotel during our stay. The location is great - in the main portion of town, close to restaurants and shopping. But, the town is very small, built into the hillside, and restricted by the river. Cheaper hotels were up the hill and quite a steep climb - wouldn't want to carry luggage up. El MaPi was close to the train and Machu Picchu bus, very convenient.
The lobby is recently upgraded, modern and nice. They also have a nice bar with good drinks and service. Free welcome Pisco Sour was nice touch. The restaurant was ok, decent breakfast that opens early enough for Machu Picchu visitors to get a bite before heading up the mountain. Didn't like the 11 AM check out. If we can, we like to sleep in when we travel or spend some time seeing the sights without toting luggage around.
Our room was great. Reading other reviews, we must have hit the jackpot or got a recently upgraded room. Although not fancy (I don't think there was 1 picture on any wall), it was clean and spaceous, new linens and towels. We had a good size bedroom, sitting room with sofa, and large bathroom (which had LOTS of hot water). Bathroom even had both 110 and 220 power - US and Europe plug outlets. We looked out over the bar's courtyard which at first sent warning bells to my brain after reading other reviews about noise issues. We had no problems with noise. The bar and town do shut down early - probably since most tourists are getting up early to see the sights.
I thought the hotel staff and level of service was fine. Nothing outstanding, but we never had a bad experience either. When I asked for a hairdryer, they brought it. The hotel did store our luggage our last day while we were at Machu Picchu and even offered to take it to the train station for us.
I would stay here again and recommend it to others. We had a good experience.
