“Good Room, Great Location”
Reviewed November 18, 2010

Before we traveled to Aguas Calientes, we looked at the TripAdvisor hotel reviews. We were not very impressed with reviews for the El MaPi Inn. I asked our travel company to change the hotel, but everyone was sold out, so we took the risk.

We were very pleased with the hotel during our stay. The location is great - in the main portion of town, close to restaurants and shopping. But, the town is very small, built into the hillside, and restricted by the river. Cheaper hotels were up the hill and quite a steep climb - wouldn't want to carry luggage up. El MaPi was close to the train and Machu Picchu bus, very convenient.

The lobby is recently upgraded, modern and nice. They also have a nice bar with good drinks and service. Free welcome Pisco Sour was nice touch. The restaurant was ok, decent breakfast that opens early enough for Machu Picchu visitors to get a bite before heading up the mountain. Didn't like the 11 AM check out. If we can, we like to sleep in when we travel or spend some time seeing the sights without toting luggage around.

Our room was great. Reading other reviews, we must have hit the jackpot or got a recently upgraded room. Although not fancy (I don't think there was 1 picture on any wall), it was clean and spaceous, new linens and towels. We had a good size bedroom, sitting room with sofa, and large bathroom (which had LOTS of hot water). Bathroom even had both 110 and 220 power - US and Europe plug outlets. We looked out over the bar's courtyard which at first sent warning bells to my brain after reading other reviews about noise issues. We had no problems with noise. The bar and town do shut down early - probably since most tourists are getting up early to see the sights.

I thought the hotel staff and level of service was fine. Nothing outstanding, but we never had a bad experience either. When I asked for a hairdryer, they brought it. The hotel did store our luggage our last day while we were at Machu Picchu and even offered to take it to the train station for us.

I would stay here again and recommend it to others. We had a good experience.

I enjoyed the night stay at EL Mapi. The beds were comfy. The hotel is nice. (They are currently doing work on the water system but only during the day no noise at night). Great location! Definitely targeted towards young US travelers (this was the only hotel I stayed in during my trip that had a computer with a US keyboard). Free wifi and a restaurant also.

Stayed overnight on a 2 night trip to MP. Its pretty sad coming down the hill from Machu Picchu and we weren't sure what to expect in the ramshackle town of Aguas.
El MaPi is a modern, clean and fun hotel in the centre of town. On arrival the staff were brilliant, really polite and welcoming. There is free interent in reception and the bar and restaurant areas are really clean and nicely designed. We were upgraded to a suite, not sure why, but it had a basic living room area, lovely bathroom and massive bed in a separate room - and the amzing views of the surrounding mountains. Breakfast was delicious, the nicest in Peru, with eggs prepared to order. Aguas is so small you can get around from anywhere, but this hotel is on the main street and there are tons of bars and restaurants to choose from. Its also really close to the bus and mid way down the hill in town if you're braving the 2 hr hike to the site. If you're staying over on a trip to MP, and I'd recommend it so you can spend 2 days exploring and taking everything in, wherever you stay will not take away from the experience, but here made it extra special.

although this hotel is in the middle of town, it was very clean, quiet and friendly. They have internet area with laptops( less archaic than the rest of Peru). Very comfortable beds. Only a 2 storey building it really doesn't have a view but let's face it, you're really not in the room that much. Breakfast (included) was very sufficient. Best sleep we had the whole vacation!!

My son and stayed at the El Mapi September 19, 2010. This hotel was selected by our tour guide, Lima Tours. The main objection was noise from nearby construction and a nearby bar with loud disco music with the staff unwilling or unable to us to change to a quieter location. The breakfast buffet was not appetizing and if you eat that meal prior to going into Machu Picchu to trek you must take extra food that you know what it is and how it was prepared! Do not rely on the El Mapi buffet for sustenance or for a good nights sleep. Stay elsewhere and ask your travel agent to verify if there is nearby construction or a bar. I would not recommend the El Mapi or Lima Tours for selecting the accommodations. It appears Lima Tours was not aware of the potential noise problem. Of course, once you are there and trying to rest it is very stressful to have to alter and correct these mistakes when you want to concentrate on your experience in Machu Picchu.

Dear 1Scooter,

Thank you for taking the time to give us your comments on your stay with Inkaterra.

We are sorry to learn that your stay at El MaPi was not as expected and we hope you accept our most sincere apologies.

Even though we are located close to some restaurants in Aguas Calientes, loud noise is not common and it usually ends around 11pm, when most of the restaurants close. It might have been particularly noisy due to some celebration and the construction mentioned. We are sorry we were not able to accommodate you in another room but it was out of our possibilities since the hotel was full that date.

We have brought the matter to the management’s attention and have taken some additional measures so as to reduce discomfort in these very particular cases.

Our goal is to continue to enhance the quality of our business standards and we want to make sure every guest at our hotels has a memorable stay. Your comments are very much appreciated.

Thank you again for taking the time to write. We hope that you will give us another chance to serve you.

We received a lovely warm welcome on arrival at el MaPi, reception staff were great. The hotel is on several levels, we had a great view of the mountains over the buildings opposite. The hotel isn't bad for a mid-price hotel. Beds comfortable and clean, room rather over-heated making it difficult to sleep. Bathroom rather basic, shower was more like a hot tap and something leaked as the floor was always damp. Breakfast wasn't too good; unripe fruit and the bread tasted stale. I was told that everything is fresh, I think slicing the bread and putting it out at 4.30 means it's not so fresh by 6.30am.
