“Comfortable, convenient, with exceptional service”
Reviewed January 1, 2014

I stayed for two nights when I traveled to Machu Picchu in April 2013. It is near the train station and close to many restaurants. For me, all I needed was a bed to sleep on and a hot shower after hiking Huayna Picchu so this was perfect for me. Speaking Spanish isn't a must, however, it is highly recommended in order to communicate effectively. Jimmy and Ital run the B&B. I only got to meet Ital since Jimmy was sick when we visited. Ital was so pleasant and extremely accommodating. We had the first train out when we left Aguas Calientes so they were able to pack us a breakfast since we were not able to be there for their complimentary breakfast. While not fancy, it was comfortable, convenient, and our stay was very pleasant.

My husband Peter and I were pleased with our accommodations during our two night stay at Wachuma. Was it perfect? No, but compared to other places in Aguas Calientes, it’s a great value just a five minute walk from the train station and close to other amenities. Plus, the room, which overlooked a school yard, was large and clean, the Wi-Fi connection was excellent, and we were served a decent breakfast of scrambled eggs, bread with butter and jam, fresh fruit (bananas), juice and coffee or tea. Rosa, who we assumed was the owner, sent a young man to meet us at the train station, and, while she spoke very little English, she was able to give us some basic information about our stay and direct us to the closest ATM when we arrived. The sitting area on the first floor, which was also the reception area, was homey and inviting, and Rosa always greeted us with a friendly smile.

The negatives are: Wachuma lacks heating, unless it’s available at an extra charge and we missed it. Aguas Calientes is much wetter than Cusco, so we felt damp for the 48 hours we were there. Even our clean clothes in the room were damp despite hanging them up. In addition, the hot water was iffy in the mornings and non-existent later in the day. I really, really wanted a hot shower after our 10+ hour day at Machu Picchu, which included hiking Machu Picchu Mountain, but, alas, all I got was drops of cold water. Finally, while Wachuma has little control over what goes on outside, it’s located near what looks like a small sports field where some local event was taking place. We didn’t think much about it in the afternoon and early evening as we walked by it several times while checking out the town, but the noise escalated as the night went on and the party, with music from what sounded like an ‘80s American hair band, played on until the wee hours of the morning. So much for the lovely sound of the rushing river so many complain about on Tripadvisor.

Overall, I recommend Wachuma for its value and location as well as its friendly service.

The service is good, Jimmy (Hostel Owner) went to the train station to pick us due the fact it was late at night. The breakfast is available really early, simple but enough. Unfortunately, they don't have a kitchen so you will need to go to a restaurant since Aguas Calientes doesn't have much options.

Good to spent a night, but the beds had 2 single mattress (and it as a bit uncomfortable) - so for a couple you can wake up with back pain.

Room Tip: We pick the highest floor and it had a great view to the mountains. :)

Clean, safe, very close to train station and market. Host is very friendly and accommodating. Would recommend to any traveler, budget or otherwise. Has anything you would want or expect at Machu Picchu. Wifi is a nice touch and complimentary.

I was a bit concerned booking this BB considering the low price in comparison with others in MP but I shouldn't have.

The room is nice, clean and big enough (if I remember well, it even has a heater but we never used as we didn't need it), bed is comfy, water is hot, intenet is working and at least on the back it's very quiet. Rosa, the lady at the reception was very friendly (I think she speaks only Spanish, didn't try speaking English though so maybe she does). Breakfast is very basic but we had scrambled eggs and coffee and that was enough for us. Would recommend.

Close to train, bus, market, shops, and restaurants! Cozy little B & B. Rosa, the owner, very nice and cooked us eggs every morning. bed was a bit uncomfortable, but got an extra pad and it was good. Sounds of the river flowing and views of the mountains from our room. Great value and highly recommend you staying here!

I stayed here 2 nights and felt it was a good bargain $35. You need to speak Spanish or they won't understand you. The room was clean, good temperature. Very close to the train station and buses to Machu Picchu. They have a hair dryer you can use. Skip the breakfast unless you like bread and processed meat. Very nice people. Stored my luggage on the last day I was hiking at Machu Picchu. I would go back there in a heartbeat.
