“Not a four star hotel!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 9, 2013

Definitely not a four star hotel by any stretch of the imagination - I don't know by what standards they rated this a four star hotel - Over priced.! More like a two star. Very, very small and smelly bathroom and the whole room had a damp smell and feel. Lighting in the room not adequate. The staff was cordial and somewhat helpful. Location is very good, walking distance to train station, and restaurants. Fortunately we only stayed one night.

We had a one night stay here during our visit to Machu Picchu. The staff were extremely helpful with our luggage and our questions. The breakfast was ready very early in the morning so we were able to leave for Machu Picchu right when we wanted. The rooms were very comfortable, clean and a good size; the street was also quiet at night. The shower stall was a bit small, but the water pressure was good.
One word of warning - be warned that the hotel is located a 10 minute uphill walk from the train station.
Overall, a great hotel to stay at especially given the friendly staff!

First experience was great as the hotel contacted me once we had made the booking to request details of our train so that they could meet us at the station. We arrived in Aguas Calientes and were met at the train station by one of the staff from the hotel who carried our luggage up to the hotel. That was when we realised that the hotel is right at the top end of Aguas Calientes and involved a fair uphill.

The welcome by the hotel was really good and we were shown to a comfortable room at the back of the hotel. The rooms are comfortable and of a good size. The bathrooms are very narrow but with a great shower. The breakfasts were good and we ordered food from room service which was really tasty. We spent the first day relaxing before walking around Aguas Calientes and meeting up with friends for supper. The next two days were spent exploring Machu Picchu and we were tired by the time we got back to the hotel each day. Friendly greetings and some lovely discussions with Alexander in his struggling English and my awful Spanish at the bar.

The staff allowed us to check out late as the train was an afternoon train and we were able to do some sightseeing with our luggae stored safely. A very pleasant stay and I would recommend the hotel. The staff, especially Alexander and Eliana, are exceptional and nothing asked is too much for them to accomodate.

La Cabana lies on the main pedestrian road in Aguas Calientes, rather high up.
We were met at the train station and our bag was carried up, a good first impression.
Nice lobby/modern restaurant with friendly staff. The hotel calls itself a "boutique hotel". While this may be true for restaurant and floor design, it is definitely not the case for the rooms. They are small and most of them have windows to the corridor, requiring you to always close the curtains or have curious visitors peeping into your room from quite close. In the first room, when somebody was taking a shower in the room opposite ours, we felt like he/she was showering in our room. We changed rooms and took one higher up (#27), which was quieter, but however very damp. A dehumidifier was provided. The constant noise provided good sleep.
Left for the first Machu Picchu bus, which was to early for breakfast. They provided a lunch bag which was quite good.

Room Tip: While all rooms we saw go to the corridor, taking a room at the far end (front or upper end) should...

I booked two rooms here for a night. We really enjoyed it. We slept well much better than at Sanctuary Lodge . It was not noisy and there was a lot of activity in the street. Also was close to the hot springs baths. Staff were good especially Joseph who carried our heavy bags a long way and Vivianna at the front desk. The bathroom configuration was very tight and my water never got hot- was tepid. Towels nice and plush but no was cloths and soap and shampoo basic. Tv worked well but internet signal did not reach our rooms. I would stay here again but bring my own toiletries.
The 9 a.m. checkout was too early for us but Vivianna extended it.

We arrived at Agua Calientes quite early - but a member of the staff met us and helped up arrange our tickets to Machu Picchu the guided us to where we needed to be. Luggage was taken by a second member of staff so that we could head directly to the mountain. This service in itself set the tone for the rest of our stay. They were the most helpful, pleasant, and considerate staff that I have ever come into contact with - and I travel a lot. Food was absolutely perfect. They bent over backwards to make dinner/drinks and the next morning's take away breakfast a memorable meal. Rooms are clean and the beds were exactly what we needed after a long two weeks getting there. We all loved it. Kids wanted to stay longer.
