If you have a spare day in Aguas Calientes, and want an easy excursion after the rigours of Machu Picchu, then take an easy hour and a half stroll along the side of the railway line to Mandor Gardens. The gardens are in a side valley with gentle waterfalls. There are lots of buttterflies and birds, maybe orchids at the right time of year, but don't believe the brochure boast of spectacled bears. The cafe by the railway, overlooking the river, has excellent sandwiches. The whole round trip from A.C. took us about 5 hours with lunch and lots of photo stops.

If you're spending the night in Aguas Calientes, this is a fun way to spend an afternoon. There's about an hour hike out to the Gardens, just follow the train tracks. Then inside the gardens, you can see typical peruvian flora, fruits, vegetables, etc. Then continue hiking through the valley and you'll eventually get to the end of the line where there's a great waterfall with a pool that people apparently swim in. Then its the same hike back into town.
