Pirwa Hostel Machu Picchu
Reviewed January 4, 2011

Pirwa is relatively expensive at $35 USD per night for a hostel. Its location may have something to do with it. Machu Picchu is fast on its way to being a tourist trap ($14 for bus ride, $45 for one day at Machu Picchu, and inflated prices for accommodations).

There is nothing remarkable about Pirwa. The place is moderately clean (found one cockroach), the bed sheets are clean, the water is mildly warm, and it is safe. However, the sound insulation is poor and I am fairly certain that other places would also be able to meet this level of service.

Good and simple hostel and good value. My room was clean and confortable, with TV and hot water. The staff were very friendly and helpfull. They were waiting for me at the train station. The breakfast is simple, but ok. Good location. Free internet. Nothing to complain.

Aguas calientes is one of the worst places in the world but a starting point to get to Machu Picchu. Hostels and Hotels in Aguas Calientes are ridiculously expensive, but Pirwa gives you excellent value for your money. It is not a charming place, but it is clean, service is nice and there was nothing to complain about.

I read many previous reviews... and I think Pirwa has improved alot! The rooms are clean, breakfast is conveniently served at 4am for those who wish to leave early and climb Waynapicchu, the staff is EXTREMELY helpful! The receptionist Julio even provided valuable tips- do´s and don't, even regarding my allergic reaction! Julio provided us individual maps! The location is great.. 2 minutes away from the hot springs and 5 minutes from the bus station to go to Macchu Picchu. Its a small hostel, but by the looks of it, it is constantly improving. The down side is that the bathrooms are tiny and there is only one public computer... For a 1 or 2 night stay, its perfect!

Pirwa hostel was very nice, clean and convientenly located, close to the city square and restaurants and it was only a 5 minute walk to the bus station to Machu Pichu. The hotel attendent was very helpful in telling us all the details regarding getting to Machu Pichu the next day and where to buy the bus tickets etc...There was hot water and the beds were very comphy. They also had good bagage storage facilities with lockers. Breakfast is included, and is served from 4am. The room was also very cheap, a very good place to stay before our visit to Machu Pichu.

This is the absolute worst hostel I have ever stayed at. The staff were unhelpful. When we returned from a long day at Machu Picchu for our second night there was another person in my friends bed, the staff had told her to go there. It was bizarre. The bathroom was horrific and was located right in the living/eating area with not much of a door so there was very little privacy. The toilet was broken and the entire bathroom was filthy. We asked to use a different bathroom and the staff were very unobliging. The room itself seemed clean enough, but was very very damp. I know standards vary throughout SA but this was a huge let down compared to some other wonderful places we stayed at. Do not stay here.

We booked a room for one night but could not bring ourselves to stay here and went back to Ollantaytambo on the last train out. First, when we arrived the woman at the front desk could not make change, which was common in Peru, but not at hostals.

The room! The smell of both mold and cleaning chemicals was overwhelming and made both of us ill within about 10 minutes. I had heard that lots of the hostals in town have mold problems wince the river keeps evreything so moist, but this was just too much.

The location is not all that great either, being at the top of a hill, which after a long day of hiking can be a pain.
