“One of the nicest hotels in Aguas Calientes, Machu Picchu gateway.”
Reviewed December 16, 2011

My family stayed one night at the Andina Luxury (after a frantic race through the Valle Sagrado to make the last train from Ollantaytambo). The rooms were excellent, modern and clean but small. The balcony overlooking the river was energizing but so tiny it was impossible for even one person to sit down, no room for a chair! The tubs in both our rooms would not drain adequately - a complaint I have seen in other reviews. The staff was helpful and courteous, storing our luggage while we toured Machu Picchu after we checked out. The included breakfast buffet was pretty much standard for the Peru tourist trade: Mostly a good selection but with very runny scrambled eggs. Also, buy your bottled water here at the Andina. At 4 Soles for two liters it is the best bargain you will see all day.

Room Tip: Riverside is the only way to go!

We stayed in the andina hotel on our first night back from the salkantay trek. It is a very nice hotel, flanked by the train tracks on one side, and river on the other (as many hotels are in this area). We stayed in a first floor room facing the river with a small balcony. The room was excellent, as was the view. Although you could hear the train going by, it was not disturbing and the sound of the river was great to fall asleep to. We heard that rooms facing the train tracks were a bit noisy. Also, the room had a Jacuzzi tub – about the best thing you can imagine after 5 days of hiking- and a large flat screen TV with satellite service. There were some small details at the hotel that fell short – one of the lights in the bathroom was out, the remote would not turn on the TV, and the rechargeable battery for the cordless phone in the room would not hold a charge. There are 2 computers for use, and wifi available only in the lobby. The breakfast started at 4 am and was excellent – both warm and cold options were available. We would recommend this place to a friend, as long as they booked a room facing the river.

Room Tip: the hotel is bordered by the train tracks on one side (aka loud), and river on the other (aka peacef...

We only stayed a night but it was a comfortable stay. They had a tub but draining the water took a while. Our room had a nice view of the river so that was nice, compared to staying in a room facing the train track. Check out is normally at 930am, but you can leave your bags in their storage while you visit Machu Picchu. After the trip to Machu, you can hang out in their lounge while you wait for the train to Cusco. lounge has wifi and 2 computers for those who don't have a laptop/smartphone. Train is just a few steps away. No complimentary water but they sell it cheaper than the other restaurants outside. Breakfast is a notch higher with pancakes, scrambled eggs, hot dogs, instead of the usual ham, cheese and bread common in other Peru budget hotels.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the river

The rooms are ok. Considering the relatively limited mid-priced options in Aguas Calientes, it's probably one of the better choices. It is by no means luxury however. There was some water damage in the bathroom. The breakfast was one of the better breakfasts we had of our entire trip. Pick your poison: Rooms on the river side have a nice view of the river, but the river is roaring loud (we had to put in ear plugs to sleep) in the spring time with the snow melt. Rooms on the other side have to deal with the train roaring by multiple times throughout the night (but most hotels in Aguas Calientes have the same issue). It was fine for a night.

Room Tip: If the river is high, the rooms on the river side can be noisy with the sound of the roaring river...

Clean, no frills, boring, soul - less. Room did not even have a complimentary bottle of water or an empty glass (should you have purchased your own water). No safe either. Room was on the river with little balcony (no chair) - nice to sleep to river sound but that was only perk. Alot of money in Peru ($120) for mediocrity.

We stayed here one night in a river view room which we were very pleased with. The view was lovely and there was a spa in the bathroom which was a very welcome surprise. The river was very fast flowing and did not disturb our sleep - my husband described it as no different to having an air conditioner running and I had ear plugs in all night so heard nothing. It was good having breakfast available at 5am for those who wanted an early start to Machu Picchu, but the coffee was the worst we have had in Peru, there was no black tea and the eggs were cold. The allowed us to store our luggage here while we went to Machu Picchu and loaned us a cork screw to open our wine!

Room Tip: River view is great

I had read reviews, so knew to ask for rooms on the river side, and we were really glad we did! While the rooms were not luxurious, they were comfortable and roomy, and the tiny balcony overlooking the river was great! Hearing the river at night was nice, too. Breakfast was decent, though not great. Hotel staff was very pleasant and helpful. One downside: we left a small light on in our room when we went out to dinner, and came back to a roomful of tiny (and a couple huge!) moth-like bugs (My sister did the same, with no bugs!) despite all the windows being closed. :/
