We booked a night at Hostal Varaoyc for one night as we were going to Machu Picchu the next day. We made our booking through booking.com which turned out to be a lot more expensive than making the reservation directly through the hostel. When we checked-in, we were not told that there was no running water from the tap and the toilet didn't work. Only after we went to ask about it, the lady at the reception told us there was a problem with water in the whole town. Since water and a working toilet was essential for us, we thought paying USD 25 was too much. The staff refused to give us a discount and told us we couldn't cancel the reservations. The breakfast was also pretty bad considering that most basic hotels in Peru offer eggs, white bread, juice/fresh fruit and coffee/tea. The breakfast consisted on juice, coffee/tea and white bread. Since we were climing Machu Picchu mountain on that day, some eggs at least would have been great.

Overall, considering the price we paid we didnt expect much but received even less. Would definitely not stay at this hotel again.

Nice place to stay the night before visiting machu Picchu. It is situated 20m from the bus pickup location. Simple but nice breakfast is served from 4am to 7.30 am. The main downside is the rooms on the road and river side of the building are noisy due to the river cascading such may make it difficult to sleep for some. Also the bus queue which starts at 4 am is just outside - not an issue if you intend to be in that queue. Bed is comfortable, room was warm and showers work great.

Since most people only spend a night in Aguas Calientes, this hostel may do the job. The staff was very friendly and helpful when we first arrived. The man gave us very clear directions for getting to Machu Picchu and the breakfast/checkout schedule. The breakfast was adequate - bread and jam with fresh juice. Since Machu Picchu is generally a full day visit, I would suggest bringing substansial snacks since the breakfast at the hostel is light. Rooms have a TV which is a nice perk for Futbol fans. The rooms were a little rough looking, not sure how truly clean the room was. This did not bother us since we slept one night and were out of the hostel.

We got a 4th floor room on the river side and we loved it! The water is quite loud so if you're a light sleeper, ask for the opposite side. Beds are comfy and we really enjoyed the view. This hostal is close to both the train station (just across the bridge) and the bus station/main square; we couldn't have asked for a better location!

We stayed here right after hiking the Inca Trail so we were desperate for a shower - the bathroom is spacious and we are really happy with the hot water. The older lady made us delicious fresh juice in the morning and we were able to store our bags at the hotel during the day until we had to catch the train.

Overall, a very good stay and the location was beyond amazing!

Room Tip: Ask for a room not facing the river if you need a quiet room.
