“Unless you are of Indian origin, AVOID IT.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 18, 2013

My brother commented he has never stayed in such a low quality property. I have to agree.
The room has a good TV and fridge but no kettle, poor quality of wall paint, wall mounted table fan, badly located Air Conditioning (On your head you have cool air across the night). For one, the sheets on the bed were stained - Not dirty but stained - On all 4 days of my stay. One 1 day, there was no hand towel - They were out of them! On one day, there was no shampoo - Out of stock. When I insisted I need a hand towel, the lady asked if I am ok with a clean but torn one, I had no option but to say yes. The internet is a disaster - it only worked 1.5 out of 4 days, and I was reminded of the days when we used to have a dial up connection - Terribly slow. There were mosquitoes, small insects on my breakfast table and other issues as well. The house keeping phone did not work so generally had to call 7-10 times a day for internet or house keeping issues. The shower broke down on 1st day, and they have no tap! I mean crazy sounding but true - You have NO OPTION but to use an overhead shower.
Its not completely bad and there are 4 good things:
a) Very good service - Mr.Shetty the manager goes out of the way and helped us many many times, without ever saying no to help no matter how much we asked!
b) Reasonably good location
c) Excellent food if you are an Indian
d) Clean and renovated modern bathrooms
That is alas nothing much compared to the down side.
The Indian food is generally very good, except on 1 day when it was not good. The breakfast has 1 indian cooked dish but generally good.
The staff is friendly and helpful, but the hotel let me down big time. If you are not from India, best avoid this at all costs. I am sure I don't remember everything that went wrong, but you should get the impression from above.

Room Tip: At least their second category of room - Not the basic

This hotel is best for the people from Indian origin , Indian food is really up to the mark . From staying point of view room are average with basic amenities , this hotel is for budget business traveler , considering the steep prices which hotels in Lagos usually charge .
travelers need to ensure safety of their belongings in the room , havent heard of any incidence here however its better to be safe than sorry . Most of the travelers are from Indian companies doing business in Nigeria .
there is a store in the hotel compound itself which has all the daily utility items .

Tucked away as you turn into the Odeku street, this place is a sure surprise. Unassuming to look at but offers the traveler a great stay & service. A good budget hotel. The Store "Emjay"; the saloon and the 24hr restaurant "Sherlaton" the "nirvana" lounge all adds up to give you a complete at home feel. The staff and the management are extremely helpful. The challenge at times you may face is with internet connectivity, This is an Indian Hotel. However, the restaurant offers multi-cuisine.

Room Tip: If you like better net connectivity avoid rooms at the extreme corners. Reception lobby & ground...

Cumberland Hotel, Lagos is a good budget hotel.
It is situated in Victoria Island, which is in comparatively safer location in Lagos.
It is an Indian Hotel which has management comprising mostly of Indians.
Best Part of this hotel is its food, which is served in its 24 hour Sherlaton Restaurant is admirable. Especially the breakfast which varies daily from Aloo ka Prantha, Sabzi Poori, Pav Bhaji, Plain Prantha with Matter Aloo ki Sabzi, Idli Sambhar, Wada Sambhar, etc. also the Dosa’s which are the attraction of Monday eve.
Also an added advantage to this hotel is the EmJay Shopping store which situated in its compound, where u can find each and every item of your daily chores.
Rooms are spacious, well illuminated, containing basic amenities like bed, table, chair, almirah,Dining Table, mosquito mesh on windows etc. Also each room contains an individual Air conditioner, refrigerator, 32” LCD and Intercom connections. Although quality of Satellite television is not so good. Also few Indian channels are broadcasted in Nigeria namely Sony, Setmax, ZeeTV, B4U, NDTV, etc.
Cleanliness is average in this hotel. Staff is responsive and polite. Laundry facility is also good in this hotel.
Weekends are pretty fun in this Hotel, because being Indian hotel it is quite famous amongst Indian crowd in Lagos. Thus at weekends many Indians assemble here for celebrating their weekend either at the Nirvana Lounge or the Banquet for private parties.
Overall it is good value for money
Thus a piece of advice for people travelling first time to Nigeria is to carry lots of movies along with you. Also do carry anti Malaria tablets along with.

Room Tip: rooms with window to road side are better, since on weekends the sound of DJ might spoil your sleep
