I did not plan on climbing a volcano, but met two other travelers on the ferry that were and they invited me along. I run and lift weights regularly, but admittedly have lived at sea level my whole life and have never climbed a mountain or volcano. I decided to do it anyway! It was not easy, but one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. We got up to 1300 meters before having to turn back for one of the guys to catch the last ferry back to San Jorge, but it was very windy anyway and the guide recommended turning around regardless. It was very steep at times, but once you get through the tree line the view is spectacular.

The taller of the two volcanos on Ometepe. Its a great challenge, and a good tiring hike. But the payoff is little. The trail is difficult, it starts out easy and leisurely but gets gradually more difficult the higher you go up. The bottom part is very wooded, so you dont get much of any kind of view. By the time you get high enough for some good views, you hit the ever present clouds. Its very rare that the clouds go away enough to get good views, so even if/when you make it to the top all you get is fog. Its hot and it takes multiple hours to get to the top. Its not a terrible scary hike that you absolutely have to pay a ton of money for a guide. You can easily do it if you are an avid hiker and use common sense on your own. The trail is not terribly confusing or anything. But i wouldnt recommend this volcano for a family of 5 looking for a leisurely hiking experience.
Be careful. A lot of the trail higher up is rock, and if you hike it in the rainy season there is a good chance that at some point on the hike it will start to rain making the rock extremely slippery and dangerous.
Personally i think the easiest trail is from just north of Moyogalpa. Its a lot less rocky and sun baked than the other side near charco verde.

I hiked this volcano after doing Maderas and liked it so much more! The trail starts out slow and steady - a great warm up. Then you start hiking up and up - but it's all manageable and there's lot of trees to hold onto. We had planned to stop at 1000m (the best view point before you enter the cloud forest and onto the volcanic rock). I think this is the best way to go when hiking this mountain, how we did it is a 4 hour round trip hike. If you go up past the 1000m it's another 5 hours but all on volcanic rock that doesn't lend itself to sure footing and in the cloud forest so without views. Just my opinion but I loved this hike and would recommend it! We went with Louis, our hotel, Hospedaje Soma recommended him and he was fantastic!

The Maderas climb is the standard "tourist volcano hike" on Ometepe, as it should be; Concepcion is not Maderas! This hike is dry, hot, sunbaked rock while Maderas is tropical rainforest. Two different worlds. Concepcion is longer, steeper, hotter and dryer. You need to be in good shape and you need to keep hydrated. Try Maderas first; if you have trouble with Maderas, forget Concepcion.

We walked up a path through the village just down the road from Chaco Verde Nature Reserve and saw more howler monkeys and capuchin monkeys than on Madura and Chaco Verde put together. Also great for trogon and other birds. We only walked up for two hours and then had to return, but after going through peoples' gardens to get there (that's where the path leads) we only saw the odd boy with a horse and some cattle.
