“Perfect home base for Ometepe adventures”
Reviewed February 28, 2013

Beautiful room, astounding views. Beautiful and kind hosts. Everything was as advertised and then some. Hari and Marilena and their staff and animals were all so fun to be around. We also really appreciated the way they arranged our transportation direct from the airport to San Jorge and from Moyogalpa to their place. I hope to return to Ometepe and would love to have a chance to stay here again.

Room Tip: Papacito room likely has the best view on the property.

We spent four nights at the Finca earlier in the month and had a wonderfully relaxing time. The folks running the place are real characters and a lot of fun in the bargain. We had our best sleeps yet on our visit to Nicaragua on account of the ample ventilation afforded by the many windows and the adjustable ceiling fan. Our casita was nicely situated in a vibrant garden of fruit trees and decorative plants with views of the lake, darkly-vegetated Volcan Maderas and faraway Volcan Concepcion. The parrots were a hoot along with their bizarre cohort of odd dogs, both large and small. Definitely make a point of joining Hari for a horse ride whether new to it or not; it was a real treat.

The Finca Montania Sagrada is a little further from the main ferry terminal, but well worth a visit. Things seem to be a bit simpler and less pretentious on the Maderas side of the island. And if you don't mind straying from the beaten path, this place might well be for you.

Room Tip: Although the casita was nicely set apart from the other buildings, we were intrigued by the look of...

We stayed at Finca Montana Sagrada for two brief days and were very sorry to leave. This Finca is paradise! The people, vegetation, breathtaking views, horseback riding (my first time on horseback ever)lovely casita with hot water shower, and... the parrots!!! I fell in love with them, especially Olgher.
Real tranquility is difficult to find; fortunately, we discovered it here. Muchas gracias Mirca, Marielena y Harry para una experiencia inolvidable.

My review for this place is long due. Last June we had such a good time at the Finca, it's like a hidden paradise. Everybody is so kind and the food was heavenly. Best pasta bolognese out of Italy!!! You must try the food otherwise you have missed something. The breakfast very "lecker". We spend my birthday here and it was just perfect. We hope the little baby dogs grew up well, give them a big cuddle as well as all the other lovely animals.

Ometepe and the surroundings of Merida are jut perfect for horse back riding. The horses are well looked after and perfect for beginners and experienced horse back riders. Hari please give an extra cuddle to Chavela from me. It is easy to recognize that the horses get lots of love from the owner, they are relaxed and love to be cuddled. I am a very experienced horse back rider, I grew up on a riding stable and lived with horses all my live.

We recently spent 4 nights at the Finca and enjoyed our stay very much. Beautiful location, wonderfully quiet and with great Volcano Views. The owners were very kind and hospitable and the casita we rented was clean and very comfortable. The showers were also great! Be sure to go for a ride with Hari's Horses and say hello to those noisy Parrots!

We stayed at Finca Montana Sagrada for 3 nights in December. We arrived at Ometepe after 2 days in Granada. After our stay in Ometepe, we travelled to San Juan del Sur for another 2 nights. The entire trip was fabulous, but this was by far the highlight.

The ferry trip from San Jorge to Moyogalpa offers beautiful views of the island, which is principally composed of two impressive volcanos: Maderas and Concepcion.

Mirka and Maria-Elena were waiting for us at the ferry to take us back to the finca. The ride to the is about 1 hour by car, and is an adventure in itself.

We discovered a beautiful property, at the base of volcano Maderas, with an abundant garden full of fruit trees (bananas (3 types), lemon, maracuja (passion fruit), goyava). The owners, Mirka, Hari and Maria-Elena made the stay also an unforgettable moment. We also loved being around their numerous pets (Peruvian Inca dogs, chihuahuas, cats, parrots, and horses)

We stayed at Casa Mamacita on the first floor. The room was perfectly clean, had a fan, a mosquito protection for the King-size bed (there were no mosquitos at this season) and hot water. Hot water is a luxury in Nicaragua and on the island, and we definitely enjoyed it after a full day of hiking. We also enjoyed relaxing on the hammock and rocking chair on the porch while watching the sunset, listening to the birds, and eating the fresh passion fruit and oranges left out for us.

The finca offers an incredible breakfast: fresh fruit juice (made from papayas and other tropical fruit from the garden), fresh yogurt and local honey, toast with home-made marmalade, and delicious Italian coffee. You can also enjoy a nice fresh juice during the day and stay there for dinner. You have to tell them the same day, and they'll prepare you some amazing pasta! (We ate some of the best food of the trip here). You can also go for dinner, near at Margarita's little restaurant, which offers local food in a familial environment.

The finca has a perfect location for those who like tranquility, authenticity and adventure. You can just relax or do a wide range of outdoor activities that are easily reached from there:

-Kayaking in the lake. There are a few places near the finca, which is 5 min from the lake. You can rent a kayak for the day or by the hour. We did it for 2 hours, just before the sunset.
-Hiking volcano Maderas The finca is just at the entrance of one of the trail to the volcano. Hari will arrange for a guide. You absolutely need a guide. There are no signs on the trail, and this is the jungle! The hike is 6-7hrs round-trip, with a beautiful view of the other volcano, the crater, the coast, and some nice encounters with monkeys. It's physically challenging and sometime you have to climb.. They can also provide us lunch for the hike.
- Horse-back riding. Hari owns ten horses. We did the horse back riding for one day. That was one of the best experience of the trip. The horses are so well behaved and well maintained. These are happy horses that receive love and want to make your day a beautiful one. The riding brings you to the lake, then to the village of San Ramon and then to a beautiful waterfall. You also can eat at a local restaurant on the lake on the way back. The ride is fabulous, there is nobody arround except some people walking and some animals on the street.

We highly recommend the place!

This remote finca on the incredible Isla de Ometepe is well worth the trek.

Atmosphere:
Finca Montania Sagrada achieves the perfect balance of authenticity and comfort. The owners, Hari and Mirka, are clearly dedicated to giving each and every one of their guests the best experience possible. The grounds are nicely kept, and the landscaping is beautiful and sustainably productive of the fruits you'll likely eat. There are lots of animals you can interact with. Two nice peruvian large dogs, a bunch of sweet little chihuahuas, at least 3 beautiful parrots, and a few shy cats. There is a great hut on the center of the property which is a nice place to convene with the owners or other guests. Peace and bliss abound.

How long to stay:
We were only able to stay for two nights, but we recommend at least 3 nights. This should give enough time to ride horses, do a hike, and visit ojo del agua lagoon (which is about halfway along the trip from the port).

Accommodations:
Given the finca's remote location, their accommodations are surprisingly modern. There are two structures for guests. The first has one room, and doesn't have hot water. Has a nice balcony with a hammock. The other structure has separate upstairs and downstairs apartments, both with hot water in the ensuite bathrooms. We stayed in the upstairs room and had a fantastic 180 view from our balcony of Concepcion volcano, lake Nicaragua, the horses, the rest of the beautiful finca, and sunsets. Rocking chair and hammock on the balcony really help to relax. Comfortable bed, ceiling fan, mosquito nets. Everything is well designed and clean.

Food:
An incredible breakfast of fresh fruits, juices, bread, yogurt, honey, jelly, and coffee is provided. Fruits from the property are there for the taking whenever. We did not have the opportunity to eat dinner there, but heard it was great. We ate at "Margarita's" in the town of Merida both nights and had huge, delicious meals with Tona beer for less than a McDonald's value meal. Hari can advise you on Margarita's and other eateries within walking distance.

Activities:
Hari keeps about 10(?) horses that are available for a variety of trips for riders of all levels. This was my first time riding horses and I LOVED IT. We did a 5 hour ride to the San Ramon waterfall and stopped for lunch at a restaurant in town. The waterfall is beautiful and well worth visiting. Cost was roughly $35/person, but will vary based on which trip you choose. Hari's horses are well fed, well kept, and well trained.
We did not do the hike up nearby Maderas volcano, but heard it was a worthwhile day trip. It takes about 8 hours, is difficult and strenuous, and requires a guide.

How to get to the finca:
If you're taking a bus from elsewhere, the closest stop to the ferry is in Rivas. Rivas is pretty much the bus hub of Nicaragua. Here in Rivas you have your last chance to stock up on groceries, pharm, etc. which will become more expensive and then non-existent as you continue your journey. Take a cab from Rivas to the port of San Jorge, just a few minutes away. Take a ferry from the port at San Jorge (about 1.5 hours, $11/p) to Moyagalpa on Ometepe. From here you have about 4 options: 1) a cab to Merida (about 1 hour on paved and upaved roads, $30), 2) Pre-arrange a pickup from Hari (the owner) for about the same price, 3) rent a motorbike, 4) rent a 4wd vehicle. The roads are paved for the first half of the journey, and then they suddenly become very bad.
Something to consider... ojo del agua is halfway between the port and the finca. You can pay your driver an extra ~$15 to stop there for 3-4 hours on your way to/from the farm.

Room Tip: We loved the upstairs apartment. Has hot water and a semi-private balcony with hammock, rockers, and...

Finca Montania Sagrada is on a open plain at the foot of volcan Madera at 200 mt above lake level. Coming here is not for everyone. The short road (400mts) to reach our gate is very stony and bumpy. Not all vehicles make it up. In the rainy seasons, May, June, September and October it becomes worst. Exploring the neighbourhood is best done walking.
