“Basic tranquility in paradise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 24, 2014

I camped at Chico Largo and ended up staying a week I loved it so much. I am traveling long distance by bike and had no security issues. The family let me store my valuables and were very helpful & kind. They don't speak English & I think this is maybe why people are perceiving them as unfriendly which would be a shame as I have traveled through Latin America for 9 months and this is one of my best experiences. There is a gorgeous hiking trail close by and I saw many monkeys and swam on beautiful secluded beaches with incredible views of Volcano Concepcion. This spot is a gem and I enjoyed the food & staff very much.

Loved this place. A bit anarchistic but friendly. Very good value for money. Nothing fancy, true, and the restaurant is basic but correct. Very lovely view on the lake, close to the natural reserve Charco Verde.Friendly staff, though rather 'artesanal'. If you think that the quality of the bathroom is the most important thing, yhen this is not your pick. But if you like quiet and essentials, this is it.

I stayed in a room with two double beds. I am not aware of the other room options available. It was $25 for the night including a pretty good breakfast of a scrambled omelette but stale bread and luke warm coffee.

The room was grubby and in need of some paint. The door security is laughable - I suggest you take all your valuables with you at all times. The staff were not exactly rude but seemed inconvenienced by their guests, and not at all friendly, as I had been led to believe.

Possibly worst of all for those seeking tranquillity in paradise: the owner is mother to four small children, between the ages of about 6 months and 4 years. These kids SCREAM and SHRIEK extremely loudly almost continuously - a noise to set your teeth on edge even if you love kids. They have the run of the common areas so you will not escape them.

Dinner options are limited to the three hotels and there is essentially zero convenience for an independent traveller.

Plusses: they accept Visa and probably Mastercard too.

My advice would be to avoid this overpriced, shabby place and move further down the road to the next town.

Room Tip: Go to a different hotel altogether!

The unfortunate reality for those who want to stay within walking distance of Charco Verde eco- reserve is that the three hotels nearest to this jewel of a park are far from ideal. That said, we'd recommend that visitors to San Jose looking for an economical option stay at the hostel next door to Posada Chico Largo: Finca Playa Venecia. Do not stay at Posada Chico Largo.

We knew about the shoddy security at Posada Chico Largo from having read the previous Trip Advisor reviews, but since the much better rated Finca Venecia next door was full when we arrived from the ferry at San Jose, we reluctantly decided to take a room at Chico Largo. We were aware of the other reports of theft on Trip Advisor so we carried around all of our valuables with us at all times, and I highly recommend you do the same.

The most alarming security breach is that the deadbolt lock on our private room did not align properly with its opening so you turn it and it makes a sound, but does not in fact lock!

I left two shirts out to dry on the chair in front of my private room in the morning and when we came back at dinner, they were gone. The owner asked all the employees if they knew anything about the shirts and everyone said they'd seen them out there when they were cleaning, but that maybe the wind had carried them onto the road (a highly unlikely scenario). At any other place, staff would have been thoughtful enough to take the clothes in once they'd dried. We've had nothing but super kind and security-conscious staff at every other place we've stayed in Nicaragua, and Chico Largo is a jarring exception.

The girl staying in the private room next door left her cosmetic bag out to dry at night on the exterior window ledge and by 3am it had disappeared despite there being a "security night watchman" on patrol.

As confirmation of the security problems: if you talk to any local or any cab driver with a knowledge of the island, they will tell you Posada Chico Largo has a reputation for dishonesty and theft.

I have to agree with baqarah131 about the location being wonderful. In fact the atmosphere at the hotel is lovely if you like a family environment; it's just sad that you can't trust these people. The food is good (local) and well-priced. The rooms are basic; expect water and electricity to be intermittent and to have to ask for anything that's missing: toilet paper, towels, sheets. Haha.

Message to Posada Chico Largo: TAKE BETTER CARE OF YOUR GUESTS AND THEIR BELONGINGS!!

Room Tip: If you're forced to stay here, make sure the dead bolt locks properly and keep your valuables wi...

Chico Largo is one of three hotels which are side by side at Charco Verde. The hotels are owned by three brothers, and there are some similarities--notably poor security, and robberies. Chico Largo is the cheapest of the three. The dorm is $5, the rooms $15.
As far as location is concerned, Chico Largo is as close to paradise as I expect to get in this life. The wind and waves over the lake, the shrieking of birds, the flaming sunsets, monkeys grunting, a magical spot.
But the dorm. The tin roof rattles annoyingly. The outer walls are crumbling. The inner walls are scuffed and grubby. Water is intermittent. So is electricity. The concrete floor is breaking into layers. A two-dollar padlock is all that stands between your stuff and a stream of locals passing within meters of the front door, fishermen and sometimes children--and I was told at Moyogalpa that thievery has been a problem at Chico Largo. Right here on Trip Advisor there are reports of guests being robbed, apparently by staff. Staff didn't bother to remove used bedclothes for a couple of days when people left. They were not rude to me, but they never had change, and didn't seem much for conversation. The food was pretty good, but expensive. I told a staff member that the dorm was kind of crappy, and he said they are going to remodel. I can't wait.
Another annoyance was the volume of noise coming from the bulding that has reception and the kitchen. Staff enjoy their loud music, and use a noisy TV to babysit their children. They don't realize that they are there to serve their clients, not to amuse themselves. I go there to enjoy the tranquility of a beautiful spot, not to listen to hideous American "music."
Still, I stayed there three nights in November and five nights in March, and had planned to stay another ten days. I left because one evening staff put a loudspeaker meters from my window and blasted what they considered to be music. I lost my temper completely and left in the morning.
The rooms look pretty good, maybe worth the $15, but they are alarmingly close to two houses that enjoy their loud radios.

Room Tip: There are two cheap rooms. If interested, ask about them. They are in the same building as the dor...

We had all our valuables stolen in July 2008 when a group of traveling friends stayed at Chico largo. The staff here were very unfriendly, rude and even started accusing one of the guys staying in the room...the hotel next door on the other hand (hotel finca Venetia) were very helpful and gave us a lift free of charge to the police station and back so that we could report the issue. The locals have said that this hostel has had many incidents of theft in the past (some of us spoke Spanish) at this particular hostel and seemed to be suspicious of the hostel staff too.

Do NOT stay here by any costs, next door is a better option or perhaps in the main strip where the boat departs.

Checked in yesterday and the staff could not be ruder, their energy is all negative, the price may be good but not worth the crap attitude. Just now I am checking out and they trow the bill at me, literally slam it to the desk not saying a word, whom ever trained these people did a very poor job. The girl at the counter is an energy vampire, avoid this place, plenty of other place for $2 more. Talking to the workers next door they also notice the long faces. What a drag!!!! goto venecia or sainai or any other place but here. Nice views, not much of a beach, good wifi, and treat area, but the staff ruins any good vacation you may be having.

Room Tip: The dorm rooms are a good value and in front of the Lake. at five bucks a steal.
