Hacienda Merida is absolutely the best place to stay on Ometepe if you truly care about this magnificent island and want to enjoy nature in an ecological place that truly practices sustainable tourism. Location, staff, food, kayaks, tour guides, wi-fi, etc. are all wonderful. Be sure to speak with the on-site owner, Alvaro Molina, and see/learn what can REALLY be done with, for and by true community involvement!
We are already looking forward to our next trip... thank you, Alvaro, we will return!

Although Merida is difficult to get to (make sure you arrange your transport to the town ahead of time), it was worth it to stay at this little hotel. The service and access to all of the island's activities were great, but the room was pretty dark and the mosquito nets needed updating since they weren't able to cover the beds. We went kayaking to Monkey Island, swam and enjoyed the hand made coconut ice cream. Great stay!

Room Tip: Go for the upstairs, lakefront rooms.

I spent 4 days on Ometepe in the Hacienda in november. the place is beautiful, all nature around, just close to the lake, with a nice open area with the reception, table for lunch and hamac to relax. enjoy the somptuous sunset ! the food is a little expensive but very good (there was no buffet when we were there). WIFI is working very well. We had a dorm only for 2 persons with bathroom, you can rent bikes or go with kayak and a guide (10 usd per person). all the employees were very kind, as well the guides and a speak english, but is even better if you can speak spanish. this is a very good place for relax, doing some sport ( hiking and biking). and good place for backpacker with a little bit of comfort

To all reading this, if you are looking for a western style hotel with all the bells and whistles and a hot tub in your room, then this is not it and you probably should not even be visiting Nica. On the other hand, this place was amazing and was one of those little places you see in those travel magazines. From falling asleep in a hammock overlooking Lake Nicaragua, to the kayak rides to Monkey Island (yes there are monkeys there), hiking to the waterfall (its about 4 or 5 hours, keep that in mind, but is worth it for those in good shape), talking to the owner, and eating the food, this place offered everything. The owner speaks perfect English, and some of the staff do as well. Place is owned by a Nicaraguan who employs Nicaraguans, including some paying for university, so the money stays locally (keep this in mind when looking for hotels/ hostels on the island of Ometepe as many are owned by foreigners and the profits do not stay local).

The COOLEST thing, besides all the owner's stories of Nicaragua's past that he will talk to you about if you ask (history lessons for history buffs), is his efforts to clean up the plastic on the island. If you think about it, most of the plastic comes from us tourists. But he is transforming it in to building materials. . . but I don't want to spoil the surprise. He will gladly give you a quick tour of his eco-friendly and appropriate use of plastic on his grounds. Truly a man of constant thinking. This benefits the youth in the community because he gives them money for every plastic bottle they bring him filled with plastic waste.

Some have been saying he employs minors or children, but I saw none of this. REMEMBER, compared to Westerners, Nicaraguans often look younger than they really are, so careful whom you call a child. I didn't see anyone whom I thought was under 18 working there.

Offers tenting as well.

The only thing that could be on the list of future improvements is maybe a tile floor in the rooms? The bathrooms had a finished stone floor in them. Just a suggestion. I like tile floors.

Pros: Kayak rental to monkey island, swimming on clean beach, sunsets, quiet, very very safe, polite owner, owner speaks English, many food choices (inc vegetarian burgers). Had no problems with mosquitoes in May, but bug nets were provided. Rainy season may be different.

Cons: Road from ferry to hotel was rough, but not too long and not the owner's fault. Lots of photo ops along the way.

Will definitely return if in the area again.

I stayed at Hacienda Merida primarily to get involved with their social projects. They are in the midst of building Nicaragua's first bilingual school, half the materials for tis being locally collected trash.
Apart from some wonderful charitable stuff, their rooms are very clean, they have large comfy hammocks everywhere, and when I went walking in the local area, there isn't anyone who doesn't wave or say hello, so it is easy to feel at home.
The food is excellent which freshly baked bread. If you speak to the chef, she will cater to any dietary requirements, for instance I can't have lactose so she is making coconut ice cream with coconut milk instead of cow milk.
There is a deck that goes out from the hotel so you can sit and watch sunset, and there are beaches, volcanoes and waterfalls not far away.

If you are looking for a nice, quiet spot to stay without crowds of tourists and set in a rustic environment this is the place.

To get there might be quite a challenge because there is no paved road, but you can either arrange for pick-up by boat or go to Altagracia by bus and then hire someone to drive you there (we paid $20 for two people, but road is at times really bad so well deserved money).

During my stay in private room on a main floor (3 nights) I can't complain about how was room furnished or quality of sleep at all, the only thing missing was bathroom which is shared and a bit simple. Couldn't find any garbage bin in the room either, but later I realized it was a good thing because there are ants in Nicaragua everywhere that will find garbage easily. Doors in the room were really nicely carved and painted.

Kitchen and drinks were reasonably priced, Wi-Fi connection available too. They have quite a few mountain bikes that are at relatively good shape and will rent it to you for $15. You can as well arrange trip to Maderas volcano (might be a bit challenge for some people, but definitely recommend!) with local guides which are coming every evening.

There is a lot of outdoor activities you can do on Ometepe Island for at least 3-4 days so don't worry you will not be bored. The place is facing west so you will as well have a great opportunity to see sunsets which are on Ometepe really amazing.

There is an early bus around 5:00 to the port so make sure you can get out of hacienda because main gate will be still locked early in the morning.

Price for private room on main floor: $23.00 [Dec-2012]

Hacienda Merida is a very nice Hotel/ hostel in Ometepe. I stayed there 4 days and had a great time. The dorm rooms are clean and nice, the food is delicious, the banana coco ice cream was perfect in the Nicaraguan heat. The sunset is one of the most beautiful ive ever seen but the moskitos are terrible but thats normal on a tropical island!. I also had a good chat with the owner and he told me about the ecologic school he is making for the community of Merida, such a great idea! I also went to ojo the aqua its a beautyful cold spring on the island.. go there if you have time.. the 3th day i went up the Madera Volcanco with the super guide named Luis.. his English is not that good but he is trying to tell a lot about the animals and plants etc. on the hike.. it was a great experience! Next time i will stay longer on the island ..
