“Avoid at all costs...almost left half way through the night...”
Reviewed January 5, 2013

We arrived in Zagora after a rather long day driving down from Marrakech. After being shown round 2 other hotels(which we didn't stay at due to a. No locks and b. no hot water), we reluctantly settled for the Hotel Reda. The grand entrance was deceiving. The only light on in the huge marble entrance hall was at the reception. 3 people sat with clearly nothing to do (and probably thinking "why on earth have you chosen this hotel?!?!). Having paid the not so cheap fee for the night (£60) we were lead across an eerily silent courtyard full of deck chairs and a large pool. No other guests spotted yet...

We entered the far side of the building to the pitch black corridors, where the concierge felt his way toward where the light switch was. 3 measley light bulbs hardly lit the very long, brown carpeted, blank walled, institutional corridors. Very eerie indeed! The room was extremely dated. Both plug sockets were hanging out of the wall. The plastic tiles on the wall were falling apart and even had a few missing. The bath felt like sandpaper. Not ideal.

We went for supper in the hotel restaurant, which, surprise surprise, was empty, apart from some locals having a chat. As we came in, their conversation stopped and they all turned around and stared at us. At the same time, the smell of faeces in the dining room hit us. We drove to a local restaurant which was fine.

Some hours later, at around 2am, we were both woken up with a horribly intense smell in our room, similar to that in the dining room, but far stronger. The smell which hits right at the back of the throat...I would have packed up and left had I not been uncomfortable leaving our room, being one of the only guests in the huge hotel with around 100 rooms... It really was very unpleasant. I woke up after very little sleep in a foul mood and in a hurry to leave. Breakfast, which was included in the price of the room, was forced down outside after we had confirmed that the foul stench was still in the dining room.

Awful. This was the only low point of a fantastic trip.

Summary: Poorly maintained, beds with ticks, warm air conditioning with a horrible stench, TV with no signal, worn-out bath, yellow toilets, broken wall sockets held together by god knows what and a restaurant with no menus

Deceived by the 4-star sign outside we rented a room overnight at this hotel on our 2 day / 1 night road trip to Mhamid from Marrakech. The hotel looked so appealing from the outside that we didn't suspect there would be anything wrong with the rooms. Well we were so wrong...

The room offered to us initially was on the ground floor opposite the main entrance and the pool area. The corridors seemed poorly maintained with worn out carpets and funny smell but it didn't bother us too much as we were tired and just wanted to hit the bed for the night. I had to call the reception 10 minutes after checking in as there was more stench coming out of the air conditioner than cold air and the room was very warm. A maintenance fellow probably with anosmia came over and said that he couldn't smell anything. Then after fiddling around with the switches for a while called the reception and agreed to offer us another room. I went around and checked the A/C in the other room which was in the same condition. So we thought that we will just endure it for the night. We couldn't stand the smell any more after about an hour and I insisted on a change of room. Finally the receptionist offered us a room without a stinking A/C but with twin beds. Though the A/C wasn't efficient we were happy with the fact that it didn't stink any more.

After the room issue was resolved we went looking for the restaurant. That is when we realised the true potential of this hotel. This hotel can be the perfect setting for a hostel style horror movie or a really cruel scary prank with its dark corridors, empty rooms and pool area with no lights. I was told there were 6 guests in the hotel that night and we were the only ones in our block of 5 floors. I think the hotel can make more money following my advice and renting the place out as a horror movie set. Any way coming back to the restaurant, we were told by the waiter that the restaurant didn't have menus and he said they served sandwiches and meat. When I asked how the meat was cooked he said "Yes, chef cook it". So we decided to go out into the town and we had a lovely brochette.

PS: Even though its been two weeks since our stay at this hotel, both our skins are covered in red lumps with horrible irritation.

Arrived here in Zagora at the end of a tour through Morocco in which we stayed at a number of 4 star propertys from Marrakech through Erfoud and Ouarzazate finally ending here.
In many ways Morocco is a developing destination so fair enough 4 star may not mean the same here as in say the UK or US but I was a little disappointed. Reception and the pool were very nice although I did notice that the pool had a dog in it when we arrived, (I'm sure that that was not the owners fault).
The room though was not good. Beneath the bathroom sink there was a large hole as if someone had kicked through the mosaic covered panel there, but worse still were the beds. I pulled back the blanket on one and someones fingernail was perched on the sheet and when I went to the other bed I noticed what looked like a blood stain on the blanket. I was exhausted and it was 9pm when we arrived, the hotel also had 2 coach loads of French tourists arrive at the same time so I just stripped off the blankets and took the non fingernail bed. Also there was no TV, not that I watch it much but its the only hotel room in the world I have ever been in without one. The other 4 star hotels we stayed in in Marrakech, Ourzarzate and Erfoud were all fine so I don't accept that the excuse that this is what you have to expect in a less developed tourist destination, especially as this was not a dirt cheap break.

  • Liked — Harsh as it sounds- leaving.
  • Disliked — The beds, the room, concrete pancakes at breakfast.

Nice hotel with lovely gardens and pool.
Medium sized rooms with lots of tiling.Poorly maintained , our room had blocked sink, t.v. not working , as the phone.
About 3/4 mile to centre of resort, but not much to see there or buy except dates!

  • Liked — pool/ gardens
  • Disliked — poor maintenance of rooms.

Good hotel in a not a particularly friendly town. The majority of the guests in the hotel were on tour groups so only arrived in the evening and left first thing the following morning. As a result we had the huge pool to ourselves and the hotel staff got to know us really well and were very attentive, friendly and helpful. The hotel itself is a bit dated and it can get a little quite given the lack of other guests.

The Reda Club Hotel is a huge kasbah complex on the outskirts of Zagora in the palm grove. It has a large pool and some beautiful gardens which makes you forget you're in the middle of the desert. My room 245 was large with two beds and a Moroccan style couch. The bath was nice and even had a hair dryer. No minibar though. The food in the restaurant was excellent and the breakfast buffet was vast. The posted room prices were 660 Dh for a single and 770 Dh for a double.
