“Amazing Experience!”
Reviewed January 4, 2014

WE loved our experience at Auberge Du Sud. We arrived on Christmas day and had a great time dancing with the staff and guests after our dinner. The staff was warm and welcoming and was committed to making sure all the guests were having a great time. Breakfast the next day was served out in front of the hotel, among all the sand dunes-- THE most incredible setting. The highlight of the trip however, was on our second day when we made the trek out on camels for a night of luxury camping. We arrived at camp in time to climb to the top of a giant sand dune to see the sunset. Then we were served a wonderful dinner under a canopy, followed by the world's best star gazing. Our hosts woke us up before sunrise the next day and we again climbed to the top of a dune for the most impressive sight. Auberge also helped us arrange for a driver to our next destination. Youniss was a great driver, and made sure to stop along the way at picturesque locations to take in the scenery. We were impressed with the entire staff at Auberge Du Sud. They not only did a great job of meeting guests' needs but also seemed to genuinely enjoy their job which came across in the service.

We recently spent our Christmas holiday at the Auberge du Sud and we had a wonderful time. We could not speak more highly of the staff, the owner (Hamid and his family), the camel trek, the delicious food, the list could go on and on.

From the second we arrived everyone at the Auberge du Sud treated us like family. Mustapha, Achraf, Mohamed, Ali, Zaid, Younes and everybody else were extremely kind to us and they catered to our every need. We also have two young children and the entire staff played with them, hugged them, gave them tons of 'busas' or kisses in Arabic, let them play the drums, etc.

We went on a one night camel trek with Ahmed (our guide who has become a very good friend of ours as he is a lovely man) to a local village (which we enjoyed tremendously) and then we stayed in a Bivouac Bouydrguie tent which was absolutely lovely as they had hot showers, western toilets, great entertainment and food (Mohamed, our host, was great as well).

We stayed for five nights in a Berber Suite and we enjoyed every minute. The room was large (we celebrated Christmas there and our two little kids opened presents and we even had a little tree) and was very well put together. The Auberge is a beautiful piece of property with a lovely pool and views of the dunes in every direction.

Every night the food was delicious (the chef's name is Mourad and he was as kind as he was a great cook).

We HIGHLY recommend staying at the Auberge du Sud and we will definitely be back to stay with them again on our next trip to Morocco.

Room Tip: We stayed in one of the Berber suites and it was large and very well put together; the room was grea...

I've sent them an e-mail asking what was the best way to reach Auberge du Sud from Marrakech. In return, they provided me with a complete tour proposal which I accepted!
Youness, our driver for the trip, took us from the Riad in Marrakech and guided us during our 4 day tour. During the first day we passed through the Atlas Mountains and spent the night at Xaluca hotel which was amazing.
On the second day we could see fantastic landscapes and visited Ait Ben Haddou. Youness know the best places to stop and have lunch. Arriving in the Desert is an unforgettable experience! We spent the second night in the desert in a private tent. That night we had Berber music and the best dinner of our entire stay in Morocco! The sky there is perfect and to see the sunrise from the top of a dune is breathtaking.
On the third day we could visit the villages around and have a special moment with the families who live in the black desert. The night in the Auberge du Sud was really nice. The staff is very kind and makes you feel at home. The view of the desert is absolutely fantastic. On our way back to Marrakech, more beautiful landscapes. Having Youness as guide really made the difference. There is nothing better than having a person who really knows the place. This way you won't miss anything!

During our recent trip to Morocco, after a long drive from Marrakech to this hotel (we overestimated the distance and time it would take to get there BIG style!) we arrived in the dark and true - the last few miles of dirt track are pretty rough, but when morning came we could see that our choice of accommodation had been worth the drive!

Auberge Du Sud sits at the northern end of the Erg Chebbi an area of sand dunes stretching south some 15 - 20 miles and probably about 6 miles wide. Some of the dunes rise to around 1000 feet in height and are therefore true mountains of sand!

We were made very welcome despite our late arrival; and were sat down to an excellent 3 course meal. It is truly amazing how the Moroccans manage to make basic fare taste (and look) like 5 start cuisine, but they do and throughout our stay here, the food was excellent!

The room was comfortable and the whole venue was very relaxing. Probably, Auberge Du Sud's biggest selling point is it's open air swimming pool with the view of the dunes through arches, but be assured that this is only one of many reasons that you should stay here!

After staying one night and relaxing the following day, we joined an organised tour in to the Erg Chebbi - riding on Camels. These were not the bad tempered animals I had expected to find and our 2 hour journey into the middle of the Erg was breathtaking - particularly the sunset! Having ridden on the camels in to our tented camp and then back out to the Auberge the following morning, I can say it is something everyone SHOULD try - but I won't be keen to try the experience again! I can say it was not the fault of the camel or our guide - you'll have to try camel riding to see what I mean!

Arriving at the tented camp at dark, we were treated to another excellent meal seated at tables in a dining tent before experiencing the traditional music, singing & dancing around a campfire, it was amazing! After a good nights sleep we all arose at 6am to climb the nearby high dune to see the sun rise from the south east, again, breathtaking. After a good breakfast we were "camelled" back to the Auberge Du Sud where we showered and then took our own private 4 x 4 tour by Land Cruiser around the Erg, visiting along the way the black Berber community south of Merzouga where we were provided with another excellent meal and treated to some more of the traditional music.

At the end of the 4 x 4 trek, we didn't have to go all the way back to the Auberge. The helpful staff there arranged that we would be met in Merzouga with our car, ready to depart.

So, Auberge du Sud, what can I say? Another top quality Moroccan experience and you MUST experience this place, take the camel tour into the desert and the 4 X 4 trek around the erg - non of it will break the bank! The welcome, the quality of the accommodation, food and the tours, all top notch. Thank you very much!

You can not beat the location. Right at the foot of the dunes. Not just any dunes, but some big towering beautiful dunes! The staff was friendly and fun and added to the experience. They put on a drum show after our dinner and then even teached us how to play. The food was good, we ended up eating lunch and dinner there because we just wanted to relax by the pool and take in the view. I wish we would have stayed longer just to sit outside day or night.

We had room #1 and it was great. Hot shower, nicely decorated. Wifi didn't work in the hotel because they only have access to 3G. But you know, we were on vacation and too busy anyways. We did a 4x4 rental which I highly recommend, so much fun! We also did sandboarding, sun set camel ride, night in the desert in the tents and then came back to the room to shower. I'm glad we ended up staying and extra night and stayed at this hotel. I would definitely go back!

After a quite frustrating drive (at night, our bad) on a few km of dirt track you arrive to this oasis. There is nothing to complain about this place, from the beginning to the end. Our only complain was to not stay long enough. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The room was a travel in Aladin's word. The pool was just perfect. And the food so tasty! Definitely a 100% recommend. Perfect for couple for a romantic time under the wonderful stars of the Sahara!

Nadia and Joe

Ps: go for a sunrise camel ride. Hard when the alarm rings but well worse the effort.
