“Truly an oasis in the desert”
Reviewed June 2, 2012

I just got back from Morocco last week.
From one place to another, almost everyday we did our packing.
After the "terrible" experience in Fès, we moved to Erford by overnight bus. We were sick of the city of extortion (it's not atrocious though), Fès. Around 6 am, when we arrived in Erford, a guy was waiting for us at the bus stop. He was sent from Auberge du Sud. Of course another strangers also came to us as usual, for introducing hotels to tourists. But the guy correctly lead us to his 4WD.
The hotel was very comfy. The staffs immediately suggested us to have breakfast in the dining room. With the amazing Berber interior, the beautiful orange dunes from the windows, birds taking rest in the building, I thought we picked the right place. We planned to go to the desert camp for the night, so I supposed we would take a rest at the lobby or the swimming pool. But they offered us a room till 1 pm for resting. How sweet! We could lay down on the bed and prepared for the camp. Thanks, Auberge du Sus! We really appreciate it!
In the evening we left for the desert camp by camel. The beautiful sunset, amazing dinner, and wonderful Berber music in the dunes! You know what? It was my first time to see shooting stars in my life!!!
We also stayed at the hotel room on the next day just for relaxing. Chatting with the friendly staffs, great lunch by the pool, and the buffet dinner with live music! I also asked the friendly manager how to get to Marrakech via Ait Ben Haddou. He explained how to and set up a staff with 4WD to the bus stop.
I still really miss the hotel, the people and the dunes! Hope I can get back there sometime!

Room Tip: I stayed in the room #1 with my friend with AC. You'll see the lovely room on their website! ;-)

If you are adventurous, romantic or just want to relax and like to be spoiled with the good food and care of the crew this is the right place for you.
Enjoy the unforgettable sunrise or sunset in the sand dunes or listen to the mysterious music at night under the starry sky, you can feel the African heart beat in it, the hotel-crew will entertain you with his music and dance.
You can make a camel trip with Hassan and his camels, or stay in a Bedouin tent for the night. If you are a Jeep lover you can make the most exciting trips and feel the beauty of the desert all around you.The hotel has rooms in the style of the region simple but comfortable and make you feel at home.
The big swimming pool will cool you down or you can read your books in a comfortable chair in the tropical garden.
The restaurant is very good with a lot of different good food.
They offer you an unforgettable time for very reasonable prices comparing with many hotels around.
I was so enthusiastic that when I had my birthday I invited my whole family to share it together with me in this lovely place. Young and old they all loved it.
This year my husband and I hope to visit this Auberge du Sud again.

Auberge du Sud is out at the end of the string of hotels along the Merzouga side of Erg Chebbi, and this gives it more of the remote desert feel most people are looking for. It's nicely designed with pretty courtyards and a gorgeous pool set to take advantage of the dune views. Rooms are very spacious and comfy. The dinner buffet is truly exceptional, giving you a chance to sample a big variety of well-prepared specialties. Breakfast, they don't do as well--get there early to get the best selection. We did the "deluxe" 60 euro bivouac for our second night, and they do a nice job on this, including letting you use a room and the pool to freshen up when you get back. We also did a full day 4x4 excursion on the rocky desert with a hotel guide who was quite talented and personable--there is a lot to see in this area besides the dunes, and if you have the time they do a nice job of showing it to you. The last few km of the drive to the hotel is quite rough, but has no sand and can be done in a 2wd (we made it!).

Granted, it is the location that makes this hotel what it is. The setting could not be any more perfect - right at the foot of the most amazing dunes that change color throughout the day and beckon you to run barefoot on the warm sand, up and up to the top towards the cleanest blue sky you've ever seen. For the photography enthusiasts it is heaven because there hardly is anything more picturesque than Sahara. For adventure seekers, it is heaven because this will be a trip unlike anything most of you had ever done. For foodies, it is heaven because meals are fantastic - one of the best we've had while traveling in Morocco. For romantics, it is - you got it - heaven, because what is more romantic than staring up into the starry desert sky while sipping hot mint tea and listening to complete silence, other than maybe your companion breathing? Yeah, there are not many faults with this place at all. Rooms are simple, the pool is a bit crowded and there aren't enough sunbeds, the grounds are a bit bare (a bunch of palm trees seemed to be cut down and not replaced when we were there) - but you're here for all the beautiful things I mentioned above, not the 800-thread count sheets and marble showers. Rooms are clean and super funky, in keeping with the exotic location. Staff at the hotel and at the overnight camp is super friendly and helpful.

The overnight trip into the desert is a must-do, there's nothing like it and if someone came all the way here and not gone on spend a night in a Bedouin tent, I would have to call that person crazy. They have a luxury tent with a private bathroom even - which is where we stayed, courtesy of our amazing tour guide (Ouarzazate Unlimited!) who arranged it for us - so those who want private facilities will be amazed what is possible among these dunes! Our experince was made even more memorable by the visit of a camel spider in our tent - both my friend and I being deathly afraid of spiders could do without it - but it certainly made for a great laugh the next morning. We actually had to move to a different tent because the spider hid under our bed and refused to come out and it was too dark to do anything about it, though the staff did their best. Great memories though - and hey! - now I know what a camel spider looks like (it ain't pretty, let me tell you).

Great place to stay, both the hotel and the camp - do it, you'll come back with a lifetime of memories.

If you want to have a holiday like a fairytale, than visit Auberge du Sud.The moment you put one foot in the hotel you feel welcome. The staff is very friendly and helpfull.
The lobby of the hotel really has character. The hotel is in one word beautiful, like the place where it is built. The rooms have their own charm.
You can do several things like riding a camel or relax at a great swimming pool. If you like to go to a city, no problem.
The food is very delicious, dinner as well as breakfast. As a friendly gesture they serve mint tea of fresh mint.
The day i arrived it was already late but i still could have my dinner.
Around the hotel and at the little patios inside the hotel you find beautiful flowers.
When you don't want to stay in one of the hotel rooms you can also spend your night in one of the tents nearby the hotel. I have never had a better holiday than this one. If you want to have a marvelous holiday than you are here at the right place.

Room Tip: every room has his own charm

If you want to see the desert and experience the thrill of sunsets and sunrises than I can think of no better place to stay. A welcoming drink of mint tea sitting on the dunes with the desert as background was a dream come true. The exciting treks into the desert with the dromedary's and an unforgettable stay overnight made our holiday in Marocco perfect.
The restaurant had a lovely atmosphere and the food was delicious. There is a wonderful swimming pool and you can take your meals there as well. Having breakfast sitting in the dunes is another lovely touch.
