“Desert Comfort in Merzouga and Erg Chebbi”
Reviewed October 7, 2010

After the long drive from Fez with our guide Lahcen, from Around Morocco Tours www.aroundmorocco.com, we arrived at the desert outpost of Merzouga after dark. We had traveled though miles of lonesome, barren land before reaching the welcome oasis of Merzouga, perched on the very edge of the Sahara Desert in an area called the Erg Chebbi.

The Riad Nezha was built in the traditional Moroccan Kasbah style, and was beautifully lit up at night with filigreed lamps and blazing lanterns. Rushing out to greet us, porters in elegant white robes and headdresses transported our luggage to our room while we were warmly welcomed with mint tea in the comfortable lobby. Throwing open the windows in our room, we saw the vast Sahara lit by the moonlight. After a delicious dinner of Moroccan vegetable soup and chicken tagine in the garden, we climbed up to the rooftop terrace to view the stars before retiring for the evening.

Breakfast was served on the rooftop terrace, with thatched umbrellas shading the mosaic stone tables from the relentless sun. While drinking fresh squeezed orange juice and feasting on fresh made breads and an assortment of potted treats, we marveled at the view before us. The morning sun reflected off the nearby dunes, casting purple shadows and highlighting the shimmering ripple patterns in the sand. A lush palm filled oasis surrounded our hotel, kept alive by an irrigation system that appeared to be under relentless attack by the encroaching sands.
The Riad Nezha appeared to have been fairly recently built, so it was fresh and clean with all of the modern amenities. The very elegant tile floors were covered with Berber rugs and the walls were made of some type of plaster with a straw texture. Traditional openwork Moroccan lights and delicate arches framed the interior spaces. A large sitting room, with pillow covered benches lining the walls, created a intimate space to visit with other guests while sipping tea out of delicate glass cups.

Our room was very comfortable, decorated with native Berber rugs and striped coverlets on the beds. The bathroom was spacious, with an open shower and ample hot water. We were fascinated by the women cleaning the tile floors, a monumental task in a hotel surrounded by desert. They first swept the sand away, then threw a bucket of soapy water across the tiles which they cleared away using a squeegee.
Mohammed, a handsome youth of about 24, who works as a doorman, waiter and general host, sat with us and visited while we waited for our guide to pick us up for the days adventure. Although he never went to college, he spoke fluent English, French, Spanish and Portuguese. He said he picked it up talking to tourists, who travel to Merzouga from all over the world. He said his uncle, Brahim Karaoui owned the hotel, but he was away during our visit.

Our guide took us to the nearby village of Khamlia where we entertained by the local musicians playing Gnaoua music on ganga drums, castanets and a 3-stringed lute. That afternoon, we set off from the hotel on camels for an overnight camping experience in their Berber tented bivouac. Our desert guide, Ahmed Kojjot [--], grew up as a desert nomad and seemed to know every dune and grain of sand. I have written about that in my trip report:

http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g293730-i9195-k3602954-Morocco_Travel_Tips_2010-Morocco.html

The next morning, we returned to the Riad Nezha for breakfast and a shower before continuing our.

If you are planning on having a desert experience on your trip to Morocco, I recommend that you visit Merzouga and Erg Chebbi. The Riad Nezha is a wonderful place to stay, with a friendly and attentive staff, delicious food, comfortable rooms and a traditional décor.

We had a lovely stay at Riad Nezha in July. Our guide Lahcen from Around Morocco Tours arranged our stay. The staff was very friendly and the food was delicious. We were able to spend the night in the desert and return and shower the next day which was very helpful.

Absolutely fantastic, not a single thing I could fault. W e booked 2 nights at this Riad whilst we awaited 2 friends to meet us in this magical desert location. We ended up booking another night and spending another 2 days with the owner, the legendary Brahim, on a trip across the country.

Absolutely exceptional service whereby I felt like a queen, everything you could ever ask, wand, need or simply fancy was at hand. Unimaginably friendly and helpful staff, who really made it feel like no task was an inconvenience. Food, snacks, tea and any other refreshment were constantly at your fingertips should you desire.

The most welcoming staff of which felt like family, after just 4 days, providing anything we might wish for, teaching our party Arabic, Berber, French and Italian was simply entertainment for them. The possibility to sit with the employees, was merely like sitting with the family enjoying stories, debates, jokes and stories.

The accommodation was beautifully decorated, exceptionally clean, hygienic and comfortable and most definitely value for money. The most stunning and visually stimulating Riad in Merzouga by far, no traveler will find a better Riad in Merzouga. The owner Brahim is well known by the entire village, and thus his knowledge of the area, his respect from the entire village is obvious, but most definitely deserved. Brahim's passion is looking after and caring for his customers, living to make sure their experience of Morocco is nothing but perfect, and this is clearly evident from the exceptional presentation of his Riad and the service that he provides.

I have to mention the food at the Riad, as it goes without saying although everything at the Riad was immensely enjoyable, the food had to be our favourite aspect. The breakfast each morning consisting of Moroccan bread, with and absolutely awe inspiring array of jams and spreads. And when we were presented with 'zero's in the morning' (which you will have to experience, I cannot explain and do justice) I was absolutely convinced I would never have to leave Morocco!!!! The explination of breakfast alone convinced 2 of our friends to book 2 nights there and then!

Riad Nezha also offers tours of more local areas but also across the country too. Every trip we embarked upon provided by Riad Nezha was again, simply amazing. In all we took the opportunity to go sand-boarding, bike riding and a 4x4 tour around the dunes. Once again the service was excellent, transport was great, knowledge was exceptional and the company was no less than perfect.

I cannot express how accommodating Brahim and his family were, after requesting how to get to Ouarzazate and Agadir, 2 places 100's of km away, Brahim offered to drive us personally showing us ALL of the sights along the way. Brahim is simply legendary,

What more can I say, a trip of a lifetime, I owe the most mesmorising experience to one place and one man; Brahim at Riad Nezha

This was a wonderful surprise for us. Brahim arranged for us to have a camel excursion and overnight in the desert. The following day we arrived back to a wonderful room to shower and clean up. A delicious breakfast followed and we were ready to hit the road again. Our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer.

I don't want to leave. This place is spectacular. My son and I have been traveling around Morocco for almost two weeks now and this Riad is at the top of the list for wonderful. The staff is beyond belief. Anything and everything that we need is provided for us. Our room is large and comfortable and the air conditioning is excellent. We spent last night out in the desert under the millions of stars. The over night was planned for us by the owner, Brahim, and it couldn't have been better. Hamid was our overnight guide and he took very good care of us. He and his assistant brought us safely out to the tents, served us tea and dinner and then played drums for us. When they were done playing they offered to teach anyone who was interested. My son happily tried and the two of them played long after dinner. Mohammed has been taking care of us back at the Riad and as I said earlier there is nothing that he hasn't provided. 5 stars or more if I could give them to Mohammed! I hope that I can come back one day with my family. Brahim is in the process of putting in a pool which will be a very welcome addition on a hot day like today.

the hotel is not particularly beautiful, or confortable...
so, why 5 stars?
- for the atmosphere: you really try the real berber stylelife in the desert. there was magic in the air.
- for the food:the dinner was super;
- and above all, for the service: the keeper Ahmed was a very generous and kind man, and he made everything he could to make our visit unforgettable.
One afternoon, Ahmed guided us through the secret treasures of the desert, and he did it for free.
One of our best experiences in our maroque trip.

we stayed at the riad's desert bivouac just for one night. we confirmed our stay via email and this was enough for Brahim (the owner) to arrange everything. it is difficult to write in a couple of lines how well we really felt at this wonderful place. the whole stuff took care of us and organized the desert trip just for the 2 of us alone (camel trek, sunset, candle light dinner in the desert, overnight stay, breakfast) and the whole experience was just perfect! the stuff speaks fluently several languages (we spoke italian, spanish and english) so communication was never a problem. during our stay, the whole stuff of the riad - Ahmed in particular - not only took perfectly care that everything was fine, but explained us a lot of the local traditions and the way people live in the desert making the whole experience an unforgettable one. we spent 8 days in Morocco and this was without any doubt the best place we stayed at!
