This small Rif Mountain village is a gem! Worth the drive, and a visit of several days, it's one of my favorite stops in Morocco: traditional, friendly and manageable in size, with wonderful warm people and a delightful medina for shopping.

Small quiet town. Plenty of tourists without it feeling "touristy" if that makes sense as there are plenty of local residents going about their business regardless. Beautiful whitewashed & blue buildings. Quiet & peaceful. Just a perfect place to spend some time.

Chefchaouen is an amazing town nestled high in the Rif Mountains. The vibrant streets of the old city are extremely narrow and steep. This means no cars can get up into the old city, making you feel like you're stepping back in time as you climb further away from the newer parts of the city. There are amazing views of the surrounding mountains from open squares or plazas.

The market in the center of Chefchaouen has very reasonably priced goods (especially textiles), as long as you bargain with the merchants. Don't accept any initial price in Chefchaouen (or Morocco in general). Don't appear too interested in any particular item and try to knock around 40-50% off the initial asking price. Some merchants will negotiate more than others.

I highly recommend getting to Chefchaouen if at all possible.

The city would be extremely tough for someone who has limited mobility. The streets are extremely steep and narrow, while stairs in many parts make a wheelchair impractical.

I stayed at moroccan friends house for three days and experienced the riff mountain lifestyle. The way of life there is incredibly organic and how life is really meant to be lived - completely stress free. All food is organic and tastes completely different to the chemical riddled and genetically modified mutations that we eat in most parts of Europe.
The people are incredibly friendly and unlike tangiers, dont harass you for your money. Prices are vey reasonable and you can find all sorts of gorgeous artisan goods dirt cheap. The same quantity of shopping would set you back hundreds of not thousands of pounds in the other tourist traps scattered around the world.
I genuinely love chaouen and cant wait to return!
Inshallah!!

Chefchaouen was a major part of the pretrip on my OAT trip to Morocco and I wish we'd spent more than three days there. The narrow cobblestone streets and blue-washed walls give it a magical feeling. Unfortunately, because of the feast of Abraham, I didn't get a chance to see as much of the medina as I would have liked, but I highly recommend a visit to this magical city.
