“A palace of hidden delights”

Dar Gabriel is a delight . From the moment you arrive through the door off the hustle and bustle of the Chefchaouen streets you enter an atmosphere of calm and relaxation . A beautifully restored traditional Riad, the bedrooms are stylish and comfortable whilst the living and dining areas offer many different places to relax and chill after a day roaming the street markets that fill the magical streets of the town. It really is a little oasis of calm . Located in the heart of the town activity but near the edge it is easy to take a stroll beyond the town walls in to the surrounding country side . The Hotel is run by a lovely Moroccan couple who offer a wonderful hospitality and sumptuous traditional cuisine. We particularly enjoyed hanging out on the living areas of the roof terrace where we read and relaxed amongst the rooftop views . If you are looking for a stylish comfortable Hotel located in the heart of the town - look no further. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Rooms leading off to the roof terrace are lovely.

My husband and I absolutely loved our stay at Dar Gabriel , we were made to feel so welcome and were looked after so well by Ben and his family. The food was delicious , some of the best we had in Morocco . Our room was on the top terrace which has amazing views and a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere . It was the best part of our whole trip . I would highly recommend a visit to Chefchaouen if only to stay at this lovely hotel .

Sad to say that ours was not the excellent experience most people have rated dar gabriel. We stayed at more expensive riads in Fes and Marrakesh and thought the lower price of Gabriel reflected small town rates, but would still be up-market - especially given the reviews. In fact, the lower rate felt too expensive! The room we had was one flight up and was dusty, bed was the worst in a long while, toilet constantly leaked and staff only put a towel down, water from the tap was either ice cold or scalding; heater did not work at all (consistent with many of the other reviews). The blankets were the really cheap kind, which is funny given that we are in the heart of wool weaving traditions. Sounds like the terraced rooms are nicer, but did not see these.

Ben and his family run the riad (owner is off-site) and they are pleasant. We ate one dinner, which was tasty and perhaps the best aspect of the experience. However, the breakfast was the most limited we had throughout our travels.

If we had paid 20-30 euro, we would have felt it was 'good value' but at 50, for what it is -- really a glorified backpackers - it felt overpriced.

Room Tip: from other reviews, i guess the upper floors on the terrace are much better so try for one of these.

My girlfriend and I stayed three nights in one of the terrace rooms of Dar Gabriel. The place was beautifully decorated and the room was very clean with a large bathroom and small private balcony. We could not be luckier with our host (Ben) and his family. Ben was warm, welcoming, very friendly and helpful. We had also two meals with them and they were absolutely delicious. Best cous cous i tried in morrocco, he recommended great places to see and eat. I would not hesitate to stay with them again in our next visit in Chefachiuen. dar Gabriel was a home away from home.

Can't recall a fault - excellent service courtesy of Ben Salaam and his family, well-located in the medina, lovely rooms, delicious home-cooked food, and excellent value. Can't recommend enough! I would recommend e-mailing the owner directly to make a reservation, as ahead of our stay various booking websites were suggesting that they had no availability.

Ben and the team were absolutely lovely and couldn't have been more accomodating. Using a mixture of french, english and spanish we were able to communicate perfectly and get directions etc. with no problem.

The rooms are big and have windows out onto the beautiful blue streets below. One comment would be that it is not as clean as other riads as the rooms are not cleaned every day. This is a particular issue as you cannot flush loo paper in Chefchaouen and with the inevitable illnesses that occur in Morocco this can make the bathroom unsanitary.

The food was absolutely amazing. The breakfast that was included with the room was ample and delicious with an interesting range of pancakes, although tea would have been nice. The dinner was the absolute best meal we had in Morocco with lovely flakey meat, delicious salads and tasty pudding.

I would recommend this to anyone wanting somewhere convenient to stay in the beautiful Chefchaouen.

Hello
Thanks for your lovely review.
The room should be 'serviced' everyday, if the key is left with Bensalam - I think this may not have been clear - I will tell him.
Best wishes

Better than the best review! my friend and l had the good fortune to rent the two top terrace rooms for three wonderful weeks! Normally the guests here stay just a few days, before moving on,but we knew why we were there. Blue and white Medina, lovely views, surrounded by mountains, great food, peaceful once the local children had gone to bed! most nights eating in the riad because the food is home cooked, salad, soup, main course, dessert, just bliss! Ben and his family look after each guest with a smile, and arrange trips and will even do your washing if you ask. So relaxed l read lots of good books without interruption. Highly recommended. All round delight.
