“Sweet Dreams”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 15, 2012

My 90 year old mother and my sister and I stayed in the triple room and found it to be a perfect fit! Our host Ben and his wife were lovely. Ben met us just outside the medina and helped us with our luggage. Dar Gabriel is such a treat. The roof terrace where we ate our pre- arranged dinner and breakfast was delightful. Our only regret was that we had time for only night. I plan to come back again with my husband in the near future and will definitely spend more time at Dar Gabriel and Chefchaouen.

My wife and I stayed at Dar Gabriel in Chefchaouen three nights during a three-week tour of Morocco with four other friends. We all stayed at this small, traditional riad just inside the walls in the Andalusian quarter of the medina. Owner Ben Salam is certainly one of the most welcoming and caring hotel hosts I have encountered in forty years of traveling. He and his staff are absolutely committed to your enjoyment. The medina of Chefchaouen is a challenge for even the most experienced traveler. It is a big benefit to have someone like Ben who will do anything in his power to insure that you have a great time in this interesting city. Having said that, the riad has its limitations. This is not a western-style hotel. It is picturesque and evocative of the surrounding city, but the rooms are small. The bathrooms smaller and not particularly well equipped. Ventilation is not great and sometimes the rooms seem damp. But, the location is wonderful. The views from the roof terrace are great. The staff is extraordinarily helpful. The price is very reasonable. We had dinner at the riad twice and they were among the better meals we had in Morocco. Ben is a great source of all sorts of information about the city and its environs. If you want a genuine medina riad experience and you are willing to deal with the hurly burly world of a Moroccan medina, this is one of the best places to have it.

Room Tip: The upper floor rooms are much smaller. If space is an issue, you will want to be on the lowest flo...

Lovely riad! Great location. Friendly staff. Very comfortable accommodations. Ben was wonderful and took good care of us. Book dinner reservations in advance and confirm early in the mornings.

I recently stayed at Dar Gabriel with family and friends. Upon our arrival, which was our second, I became quite ill necessitating a hospital visit. The manager, Ben, was a guardian angel taking care of everything and putting us all at ease during an incredibly stressful time. I was sorry not to spend more time at the Dar itself; however, both dinners and the one night I slept there were as wonderful as our first visit. The staff is incredibly caring and kind, the rooms very comfortable and clean, and the meals plentiful and delicious. This Dar is an oasis in one of the most charming towns in Morocco.

The location is just perfect, right in the Medina, surrounded by blue painted alleys and houses. Our room was pleasant and our host Ben was friendly and helpful. He gave us some good advice to visit some typical souks in nearby tiny villages.

My wife and me just spent two nights in this lovely riad. The house looks wonderful, and is very well maintained. Our room, although not so spacious, was very nice. The bed and mattress were perfect and made great nights. Ben is a very charming host, who likes to take care of his guests. We were fortunate with some glorious sunny days, breakfast being served on the wonderful rooftop terrace. And like someone else said, you have to have dinner at least once here. Ben's wife is an amazing cook, her food was so much better then all the restaurants we've been to. Breakfast was ok, like everywhere in Morocco mainly pancakes, jam and fruits. I wish they would have added the the typical Chaouen goat cheese instead of the kiri cheese. Also, since you are living in the house of a family, don't expect it to be very quiet. Its a lively household so keep in account that it might be a bit noisy at times. Anyway, although a bit pricey, its the perfect place for a romantic getaway.

Room Tip: The rooftop rooms are recommended if its sunny weather.

My wife and our friend stayed here midway through two weeks in Morocco for three nights and had a very good time. Unlike other recent reviewers we had amazing weather so I cannot comment as to it being cold and damp - it was perfect for us. The location is quite good. Frankly, the medina in Chefchouen is not very large so anywhere should be fine. The nice part about Dar Gabriel is that it is very close to a gate so you won't have to walk far to/from your taxi. The owner greeted us and got us to our room - he was excellent throughout the entire stay. We asked the first night if he minded if we hung out on the first floor to use the WiFi - his response was that "[his] house is [our] house". We asked to help make bread and couscous in the kitchen one day and they were more than happy to oblige. We ended up eating a dinner and a lunch there and both were excellent. The dinner was particularly nice as we had something relatively unique (not another tagine). The room itself was efficient - good size for three people with very good storage, but not large by any stretch. The shower always had hot water and that is what we were really looking for. Others have posted that their rooms were not serviced and ours were not, either. However, there is a note in the room that if you want your room serviced you can leave the key at the front desk. As we did not feel that the room needed to be serviced we never bothered to do this. I cannot say if others did not leave their key as requested but I could see that that might have happened as the note is not obvious. The rate was very reasonable for the what we got - the only minor issue was that they asked for payment in cash (dirham) rather than via credit card, so that prompted a last-minute run to an ATM since we did not have that much money with us. Not a big deal but something to be aware of. I would happily return to Dar Gabriel should I visit Chefchouen again.
