Owner description: Every North African town has a kasbah, a traditional administrative building made from mud and straw. This one, nestled against the High Atlas Mountains, is among the most impressive of its kind.

If your inner child needs waking up and you want to feel like Indiana Jones, this is the place to go! Completely devoid of tourists, Ait ben Haddou will give you a taste of what a true, old Moroccan kasbah looks, smells and feels like. Make sure you see either sunrise, or sunset, from the top of the Kasbah.

The guide we were stuck with was so uninteresting I can't even remember his name. We tried to escape from his clutches, but it was futile. He was everywhere. Sample conversation:

Me: How old is this kasbah.
Guide: Very old.
Me: Yes, but how old?
Guide: Very, very old....

Yes, this kasbah is very beautiful and you can get some amazing pictures, but whatever you do don't bother with guides. Just walk around yourself and save your money for the guide at Kasbah Amridil, who will explain everything you need to know about kasbahs.

Another thing to note: nothing exciting ever happened at this kasbah. It was just a compass caravan.

Many movies were filmed at this beautiful Kasbah and our tour guide allowed us a glimpse into one of the traditional houses, were the old lady sat us down and served us Moroccon tea. According to our tour guide, the lady's son had befriended actor Russell Crowe whilst filming 'Gladiator' and he sat to drink tea everyday while shooting in the very same room! A large poster of him dominated the main wall akin to some sort of shrine! It was very fascinating. The kasbah is a pleasure to stroll around, but bear in mind you could get hassled to purchase from some of the store owners.

Of course this is a must-see. But the hassle-factor is greater than elsewhere and once inside, it is not that spectacular. Ensure you have tea in the small hotel inside the walls (cannot remember the name - very nice terrace.

When you are around this site, take the d tour: it is great, unforgettable and amazing. Don't expect a lively kasbah with shops and bars, just a careful restored glimpse of the past. Take an hour, or two, that's enough, but it's worth every minute.
