“Traditional home, with Magnificent roof-top views”
Reviewed February 4, 2013

I turned up in this sleepy village, late one night without a reservation. Despite my impromptu visit the family who ran the La Fibule d'Or went out of their way to accommodate me and even kicked a worker out of his room to allow me to stay the night!

The home is built in a traditional style and may seem basic by western standards. However the rooms are clean and very characterful. There is no heating and it gets pretty cold in January. The showers are pointless. There is "occasional" wifi downstairs. The family don't speak much English.

At 300dH per night including a good dinner, a very nice breakfast and amazing views over the kasbah this is an excellent choice.

Most people tend to stay in Ait Ben Haddou for only one night. I stayed for two nights and I recommend an extra day or two if you have time. There is not much to see other than the Kasbah but the village has a very sleepy, relaxing atmosphere that makes you slow right down. It will also give you the opportunity to see the Kasbah at both dawn and dusk.

Some rooms in an old Kasbah-guesthouse. Located very near the ksar in Aït Benhaddou. Very friendly owners and cosy rooms with clay-walls and traditional decoration. With thick blankets, it was nice to sleep there also in January. The rooftop terrace have a wonderful view of the Ksar. Nice breakfast on the terrace in the morning.

Room Tip: Ask the owners to see different rooms.

When we arrived at Aït Benadou we had no clue where to sleep. So we went hotel shopping...
After visiting two pretty shady, yet overpriced hotels, we were extremely happy to get to La fibule d'or. We got a pretty good deal. The room was clean and spacious. Dinner was good and we left the table feeling satisfied.
We slept pretty well even though we were a bit cold in the room. December isn't the warmest month of the year in Morroco.
Having breakfast on the rooftop is a real treat. The view on the ancient kasbah is breath taking!!!!

Room Tip: Some rooms have a view of the kasbah. If you book in advance or ask for it you may get lucky. We got...

Amazing view from the terrace, which is where meals are served. My room was pretty warm (no air conditioning) but the fan they provided helped. Houcine (the owner) was very hospitable, even inviting my group of friends to a cousin’s wedding in the evening. Dinner, included in the 200 DH per person per night price, was very good. Breakfast was also included. Ait Benhaddou seems to have a lot of options for hotel, some with pools or other amenities, we chose this one mainly because of the view and the building seemed more interesting than a lot of the others. Parking provided in a walled courtyard.

stayed here with a tour group for only one night but we all wanted to stay longer!! fantastic rooms that were clean and comfortable. no aircon in our room but large window with a fan was adequate in August. Some other people in our group felt too hot and regretted not taking up the option for a bed on the roof. the hotel had a great roof top area for relaxing and meals. dinner was delicious, especially after a cooking demo from the entertaining Mr Action!! we stayed during ramadan and were amazed at the enthusiasm and service given by a lovely family who had to have been hungry, thirsty and tired!! not a negative word to say!!

We visited as part of a touring group - so only one night. We would have gladly stayed for more as the proprietor and his staff and family made us welcome and the rooms were just right - comfortable and with great views of the Kasbah.
Excellent meals served on the roof terrace and overall a great experience.

Room Tip: All rooms would be good.

Fibule, an ancient form of brooch pointed and highly ornamental to secure garments has been widely used by the Berbers where it was once used by Germanic tribes as well as the viking. The Fibule d'Or as a name of an accommodation house in the little town of Aït Ben Haddou 5 or 6 kms off the main road through the central Atlas mountains has been well chosen in that it secures an impeccable view over the mesmerising kasbah tucked into the hill opposing it.
Either you stay inside the kasbah and its surrounding maze, or you stay opposite it where Fibule D'Or is. The setting sun will work its magic on the kasbah as you contemplate it from the rooftop of the Fibule D'Or, where all meals will be served.
Houssain runs it and will be quick to tell you he's been an extra in no less than 23 movies filmed in the area including Gladiator. He has awards for his prowess, and Australians may recognise his face from the cover of the Intrepid Tours brochure. Several very chatty staff including Mohammed will keep you entertained and pumped up with mint tea.
You'll notice a unique key fitting at your door when you step inside your room. Spartan, spacious with a high ceiling is what is needed in the heat of June. But it's the rooftop terrace where you'll want to contemplate the vista. With sundown, the moon's right there. You could swear it is matching the brilliance of the sun.
Altogether a fantasyland and bound to be a highlight of any Moroccan journey. A timeless view which has a very very humbling effect on its beholder.
