The Taaras Beach & Spa Resort
Ranked #2 of 12 Hotels in Pulau Redang
Reviewed March 20, 2014

This is our 4th time at the beautiful resort. Previous three times were under Berjaya Redang Resort & Spa, which we totally enjoyed ourselves. This is the first time that we stayed under the new management. Glad to see some familiar faces at the concierge and the recreation center. We were there for 3 days with a company of friends from Korea, S'pore and Australia. We wanted to share this beautiful resort with them. But we all went home a bit disappointed. March is not a good time to go as its windy and the sea is rough. We had a few complains regarding our lunch and dinner with missing order, slightly uncooked food but this was still ok as the F&B manager and staff put in much effort in making each of our meal time special, which we appreciate. We however find the reception staff unfriendly or cold though. Repeat request to on the air-conditioning for the play room, checking out was long despite informing the front desk an hour earlier. Overall service needs much improvement. It's a beach resort, the vibe there is just not doing justice to the beautiful beach and surroundings.

The resort is not cheap, which does not reflect in the service and food quality received.
Let me start from the pros:
1. Nice private beach, crystal clear waters
2. Nice rooms and well-kept grounds
3. Gym overlooking the beach and sea was good.

Now lets see the cons:
1. The beach brasserie is a rip off. I ordered a Japanese tempura set and my wife ordered a pasta. For the price they charge, they couldn't even provide Japanese rice. Tempura prawns were not fresh, chawanmushi was overcooked. Crabstick tempura tasted like those bought from the supermarket.
Fettuccine was overcooked and soggy, seafood was not fresh as well. I ordered an orange+apple juice, and when the bill came, they actually charged me for 1 orange juice and 1 apple juice. Only upon highlighting that they revised the bill. The fruit juice tasted like there was bitter gourd mixed into it. Asked for ice water but not served. Have to remind again then it was served. All the while there were only 3 tables occupied, certainly not understaffed.
2. The second night we went for Asean restaurant. Better service as water is served before taking orders. Food tasted better than the Beach brasserie (maybe because we did not order any seafood) but chicken cordon bleu was too dry and a bit hard. What shocked me after the meal, I was charged 31 ringgit for my pasta when it was written as 28 ringgit in the menu. Told the waiter to check again with the menu and he confirmed that it was a mistake and item will be revised to 28 ringgit. However, the cashier came again with the same bill, saying that there was a 3 ringgit surcharge because I chose Fettuccine for my pasta instead of Spaghetti. Can you believe it?! It was totally not mentioned in the menu! Not wanting to ruin my mood, I just signed the bill and walked off.
3. Breakfast choices were limited, there is an egg station but no one manning it. A guest actually requested for an omelette and I could see him waiting for the chef to appear at least for 5 minutes. Didn't bother to order one. Definitely not 5 stars breakfast (no dimsum, yoghurt, chicken sausage again looked and tasted like packed Ayamas ones which you can get in the supermarket for <5 ringgit)
4. No water served to the beach even there were only the few of us there. Waiters only came with the food and drinks menu asking if you would like to order anything.
5. Room was upgraded to hill deluxe which was spacious and had a good tub. However, bed was too soft for my liking, some floor tiles were hollow and felt like it would crack when stepped on it. On the first day, water heater took forever to function and we did not turn it off since.
6. Upon checkout, we were waiting for the shuttle bus to the airport along with a few other guests. Staff was preparing welcome drinks presumably for the next batch of arrivals but didn't offer us anything. Maybe because we had settled the bill already.

All in all, service needs to be much better and food quality needs to be improved to be considered a 5 star resort. I would've given a 2 star rating if not for the beach and sea.

Arriving at the island of Redang via Berjaya air, we were quickly greeted by staff of the Taaras, helping us with our bags to their shuttle van which brought us to the resort 5 minutes away.

Upon arrival, we were presented welcome drinks and were seen to immediately with very welcoming staff, and the usual formalities were done away in a quick 10 minutes. The driver of the buggy who brought us to our room was very friendly, and trained enough to answer questions that we had.

The room we booked was large enough for a family of 2 adults, 1 child and a toddler. Furnishing was new and comfortable. We did not stay in the room for long after checking as our kids were excited about heading down to the beach. Actually, we may not have stayed in the room for long throughout the trip as most of our time was spent either at the beach or at the hotel's swimming pool.

The beach, with it clean, soft and white sand was a real treat. There were plenty of beach loungers bordering where the sand met the resort with all loungers coolly shaded by large umbrellas. The water was crystal clear, with schools of fish swimming by even in the shallows.

When it got too hot, we cleaned up and the kids proceeded to the children's room, which was adequately equipped to keep very young children occupied for short periods of time.

Come mealtime, we headed to the all day dining restaurant for our buffet fare which was included in the rates. The food were a hit and miss, with some dishes being delicious (mainly asian food), while others being unpalatable. For dinner, we decided to try the beach brasserie, and found that the food at there was dismal, with descriptions on the menu not matching the actual product that was served on our plates.

Having stayed there for 3 days, we thoroughly enjoyed the facilities, service of the staff and of course the excellent beach and waters, but by the 3rd day, we were all craving for properly cooked meals. Before leaving, the property manager, Ms.Henna came to say good bye, and we brought up the issue of the quality of the food. She assured us that they were aware of the situation and have been and are currently working diligently to bring the quality up to par with world class resorts.

The ferry ride to Pulau Redang was not something I look forward on doing again so I guess taking a flight from Kuala Lumpur would be better next time. The waves was just crazy during February.
When we arrive at the resort, the welcome drinks and cold towels really help with my shaky knees and weak stomach (from the seasickness)
We stayed in one of the Hillside rooms and it was spacious as well as the toilet. The bed was extra soft as well as the pillows.
We got a small balcony overlooking the white beach and turquoise to blue ocean.
Friendly staff, most of them are Filipinos which was a plus for me 'coz they were extra friendly as well as one Indian waiter from Penang that was also really helpful with our food orders.
Too bad we only get to stay one night, it was heavenly, I wanted to stay for a long time.
The food needs improvement though, more seafood I guess to complete to secluded island feel.
Guests get to enjoy the resort's own beach and waves!

So me and my wife decided to spend our cny holiday in redang. We opted for the taaras because is the only resort that opens at the time plus i wanted something fancy since its my wife's birthday too.

We took the first flight out to kuala terengganu from kuala lumpur, spent the remaining hours in pasar payang(good for batik hunting) before catching our ferry at 2pm.

Ferry ride was almost 2 hours, not so great with the wife as she got sea sick half way through(which explains why they hv plastic bag hanging above ur seat).

When we arrive at the jetty, they were members of the taaras waiting for us and we hop on the van to the resort, journey is only 10 mins to the resort.

At the lobby we were welcome by the resort staff with cold towels and drinks. Choice of drink is a little bit on the obscure side(ginger with calamanci) im guessing its suppose to help guest whose seasick(?)

I wondered around before checking in, walked past the lobby and saw the blue waters of the sea, its so beautiful its unreal. But i didnt want to get myself too excited so i just continue with the check in.

We were told by the reception (Ms Siti) that we will be upgraded to a seaview hillside suite as opposed to the garden suite that i booked for. Altho i didnt knw what to expect i'd take the word 'upgrade' and 'free' anytime of the week!

Hop on the buggy and the driver was kind enough to give us a mini tour of the resort. Along the way we could see the view of the beach, which got me excited to see our room. When we saw our block i honestly wasnt impressed, it's almost dull, similar to an old housing complex and i realize the landscape needs a little bit more than just trimming.

The room however makes up for it. HUGE. Its almost two rooms put together, one side of it being the living room and bedroom the other. Both with flat screen tv. Open style bathroom with wardrobe. Bathtub, the bathtub comes with a million dollar view. You will be amaze how beautiful the view is. (see picture below)

The food here is good, altho it can be quiet boring after a while so i suggest you eat out, i would recommend restoran ismadi, they serve local malay food. Hotel can provide you with shuttle service with rm20 charge to your room. Going home you can either walk(remember to carry the torch light given in ur room) or Mr Ismadi himself can offer you a lift. Behind the resto there is a mini market(approximately 100 meters on your right) for you to buy snacks or toiletries.

The service among the staff was good, all smiles everywhere. And very attentive to your request too.

Beach, soft white sand and the waters are clear blue. Anyone whose been here would agree with me that the beach here is amazingly beautiful.

If you plan to come to redang and want a little bit of privacy, this is the resort for you. You can opt for other places but this is the only resort with a private beach unless you are on a budget you can venture elsewhere like long beach etc as they offer chalets or budget hotels.

I can only offer praise to this resort altho i'd like to point out a few things

Landscape needs abit of trimming

Water heater needs replacement, we were transferred to a different room(next door) because the water heater didnt work but same case as the other room(couldnt be bothered to make a fuss considering they give us free.

Buggy drivers, one guy in particular might want to consider a career as go kart racer.

Tv need some tuning, poor reception for all channels.

Matches, im guessing its a very old match, very difficult to light up.

That is all.

In summary, i would recommend this place and i would definitely come again. I made friends with some of the staff(reception, lifeguards, recreation staff) and they are all very happy to see someone who came from their hometown as guest.

Its nice here, you will not regret.

We recently stayed at The Taaras in Jan and it was very relaxing. The staff were very helpful and attended to our needs. The room was beautiful and the bathroom was huge, the bath and shower were amazing! Although it was rather rough weather whilst we were there it was incredibly relaxing and the beach is beautiful. The food was a bit hit and miss. Sometimes is was amazing other times a bit so so. The gym overlooking the bay was great. We had a pleasant relaxing stay at the Taaras. The only problem was that when I booked the hotel I had not checked the weather for our time there. I then noted that it was going to be raining and stormy whilst we would be there. As we were planning on snorkelling we tried to refund the trip an hour after booking. The staff were very helpful and prompt with replying to emails. Unfortunately we were unable to get a refund for our booking even though we tried to do this an hour after booking. I am still glad we went though as the resort was beautiful and at times we had the beach to ourselves. The staff were very helpful during this enquiry and I fully understand they have no control over the weather!

I was there with my friends for the Chinese New Year Holiday,When we first reached to the hotel we were pampered with welcome drinks and cold towel by Anil the F&B Director..Superb hospitality showed by him through out our stay there..We were checked in by Marion the sweet lady at Front Desk..she was very helpful and kind. She also upgraded our room and that was what all the guests wants to hear upon checking in. On top of that we step in to the beach we felt like we were not in Malaysia. The hotel has a private beach with a superb scenery. I would say the hotel was good but the staffs the made it excellent!!! Last but not least the Resort Manager Henar was there when we were checking out from the hotel and asked us about our stay and offer assistance with our luggages even there was bellmen around. If i plan a trip to Redang in future, The Taaras Beach & Spa Resort will be my first choice. Kudos to the team and keep up the good job.

Room Tip: Garden Suite will be a good choice.
