All the places on the Perhentians aren't luxurious. This is a backpackers island with very cheap accommodations. We had the third row rooms, which are the cheapest. No airco but we left the windows open at night, which was very nice with the sea breeze. Breakfast was nothing special. Bed was clean upon arrival but the room has not been cleaned once in the 4 days we stayed here. Just don't come to the Perhentians with high expectations on sleeping places and you will enjoy your stay.

Don't expect very luxery rooms, but simple rooms on a nice location. We have slept in the rooms with AC and the A-frame houses. The A-frame are small but cheap and direct on the beach. We paid 100RM per night including breakfast. The breakfast is every day the same and they should change it more. The rooms are clean and have a nice view on the sunset. It is adviceable to book in advance.

But apparently the rest of the rooms (other than the 3 A-frame style shacks on the beach that we luckily landed) are pretty horrible!
The free breakfast was relatively tasteless..other than that not much more to say, the place had a pretty bland vibe and a horrendously tacky sign that lights up at night.

If you can't get one of the shacks on the beach probably look elsewhere..

The whole place is disgusting. You pay a lot more than the other places on the island, and it is so much dirtier.
Milldew on bread as breakfast, cockroaches in the room, etc.. I know it is a backpack island, but we have done several very cheap hostels in Malaysia, and they were all a 100 times better than this one. Aweful experience. Plus the staff is not friendly at all.

Room Tip: Ombak resort, World Cafe, Maya Hostel, ...

Came here with my girlfriend in August 2013 for three nights, we had a beachfront room (which to clarify often means that you are not actually on the beach, but are facing it with a little walk down). Most of the other criticisms from reviewers are correct - the walls are indeed paper thin and privacy is not to be expected, the rooms are only cleaned when you ask, and the food is pretty hopeless. HOWEVER, as a place to base yourself it is really not at all bad. The island is packed full of nicer places to eat, including many of the establishments a minute's walk along the beach. The view from our room was magnificent, with vistas along the beach to die for. The location is also pretty ideal - coral bay is beautiful, lively but not noisy, long beach is an easy walk away, and in the other direction it is an easy walk to the utterly gorgeous and mostly deserted Mira beach.
Senja is never going to win any awards, and it's definitely a backpacker hostel more than a hotel, but if you want luxury, don't come to the perhentians. Senja was fine, no-frills accommodation for a reasonable price in a heavenly location.

I came to Coral Bay to dive - some friends were working at Ombak Divers so I wanted to stay on this beach on this island, Senja Bay was recommended to me as one of the better places. I've read some of the reviews - anyone considering staying here must understand that this is a cheap & cheerful backpacker island. Senja Bay is OK, it is rundown, the walls are paper-thin, the restaurant staff won't take your order unless you press the buzzer (even if there are 5 of them and you're the only customer). Sand does get everywhere, rooms are not cleaned unless you ask reception (which you can do daily), there are mosquitos. Breakfast is OK, the rest of the menu mediocre, the banana smoothies are excellent. If you don't have a beachfront room then you will have to climb stairs. It is a long way from the jetty and if you do arrive with 20kg of dive kit plus the rest of your stuff you can either lug it across the beach or leave it on the jetty (safe enough), walk to the hotel and ask them to collect it for you (not a problem - they also carried it back when I left). If I came back to the Island I wouldn't mind staying here again, it's what I expected and I'm too old to sleep in a 10-bed dormitory. There are no 4&5* hotels available. There are plenty of dormitories for a couple of US$ a night if that's what you'd prefer. Personally I felt the reception staff were very nice and helpful when I asked them for information (they weren't quick to volunteer). I booked online and didn't feel that I paid too much for what I got, email queries were answered promptly & in good english. 10 nights at Senja for less than the price of a night in a better 4* in a City. The wireless rarely worked. It is in a beautiful setting and the view from the cafe is absolutely stunning.

I would suggest booking any diving / snorkelling etc separately. There is no need to book the boat transfer through the hotel, book it on arrival into Kota Bharu airport, or Kuala Besut jetty if you don't arrive by air. There are plenty of good cheap & cheerful restaurants around the island. I booked B&B, wouldn't recommend you book 1/2 or full-board.

Room Tip: beachfront if you can. If not then request a room lower down the hillside to avoid a climb.

This place is OK but overpriced for what you get.

The place is rather run down and that's OK but when no one does a real cleaning regularly it gets dirty and that's the biggest problem here. Quite some mosquito at night and no mosquito net is provided unless you ask for it. After my booked nights I changed place.

The view over the bay is great and I would say it the place has a fair breakfast buffet.
