Okay, so when you rock up to an island like Perhenthian Kecil, you need to be aware that you're not headed to a plush beach resort - pretty much ALL of the accommodation on the little island is basic. So although this review is average, I'd still recommend Maya as one of the better options on the island (and believe me, we looked at them all!)

Maya have 2 different chalet options - garden chalets at RM 60 or beach front at RM 80. We opted for one of the four beach front ones available and those would be my recommendation if you're going to be staying there. The room itself isn't amazing so the balcony and the view make up for it.

Inside the chalet is pretty small - a bed, a dresser, a fan and an attached bathroom with cold shower. It has wooden floors which is good for brushing out the sand and a pretty big balcony with views of the beach and the jetty. You'll be able to watch an amazing sunset from your balcony. There is a back door and also a front door with additional front sliding doors so it's easy to keep the room cool by opening these and letting the sea breeze blow through the room. We had the doors open most of the time and had no trouble with bugs or mozzies - always a good idea to burn some mozzie coils though (which we did).

Downsides of the room? It could have been a little cleaner. On the surface everything was clean - the bed linen was good and the toilet of a clean enough standard but as I was tucking in my mozzie net I noticed loads of dust and cobwebs on the wooden bed frame headboard. Probably the most annoying thing was the bathroom floor which didn't run on a slope meaning the water puddled after a shower and took ages to drain away (not so nice going to the loo and having to step in puddles of cold water).

Overall though, it was decent enough and as I said it's one of the better budget accommodations on the island. We'd have happily stayed there longer but availability came up at another newer and cheaper resort we'd already stayed at so we headed back there after 4 nights at Maya.

They also run a snorkelling trip which is fantastic, but I'm going to leave a separate review for that as it deserves 5 stars!

Room Tip: Take your own mozzie net if you're staying on the island - most places don't have one.

We extended our stay for 2 weeks, we loved it! It was our first stop on our RTW trip, and yes looking back it wasn't particularly clean, but the view and the island more than made up for it. We didn't have any problem with bed bugs - thank the lord, otherwise this review would be v different I am sure! We found the Maya family all friendly and helpful and the snorkeling trip was 1st class and so cheap!

We paid 70 ringgit a night for a good-sized room back from the beach. The bed was reasonably comfortable, although I would have preferred natural fiber sheets. Fan was sufficient for cooling. The windows need screens so you can leave them open and get ventilation w/o skeeters. Pretty good restaurant. Excellent fruit shakes. No alcohol.

Their sign actually says "Maya Chalet", not "Maya Guesthouse".

Room Tip: If the ocean front rooms are available, they're a deal at 90 ringgit with ocean views and two do...

Very clean, simple accomodation and a good price. Right on the beach with a great restaurant attached serving food and drinks. Mango shakes are the best!

We visited Trip Advisor on Perhentian islands and figured out that Maya Guesthouse was supposed to be THE place on Coral Bay. Fine. We managed to book a room with them by buying the boat ticket to the island through Sea Life Services, as advised on Maya's FB page. This was weird, but anyway. We get to Coral Bay around 6pm, find the place. The bungalows look overall a bit shabby from outside. Reception takes us to our bungalow, which is the last one available. It looked horrible. It reeked of damp once inside. There was an engine going on right behind the bungalow. There was no electricity, the room was very dark. Basically it was a shack, I would not have put my dog in there. I was very upset. I was forced to buy a ticket with an agency to book this horrid place ?? I don't understand the ratings on this page. Anyway, we did not stay. These people, eventhough we made the effort to book in advance kept us the worst bungalow of the beach. We move to Sanja's, a bit further up the beach. More expensive, but better value for money.

Room Tip: No alcohol available in the restaurant (not even a beer). They don't even allow you to bring any...

My boy-friend and I got recommendations to stay at Maya's, but regret it because honestly...it was a dump. It just didn't feel clean. We're backpackers here,so it's not like we're expecting the Taj Mahal, but this place has been one of the dirtiest we've been in with paper thin walls...My reco, go down the beach and keep looking.

A basic cottage on the beach with a good veranda with great views. The beds are old but the room feels clean and its good for the purpose on the island. If you want luxury then choose something else. The people running it are sweet and the restaurant is good. Can recommend their snorkelling trip.
