“Rustic resort with fantastic food, beautiful beach”
Reviewed September 18, 2013

Of all the places on Long beach, this is supposed to be one of the nicer, but all travelers should know that this is a rustic kind of vacation - not luxury. With those expectations, then one can fully enjoy Bubu.

The hotel rooms are small and simple, but clean. Staff is friendly. The beach and water are pristine and beautiful. Long Beach itself has some night spots. The Bubu airport/jetty transfer was smooth (though the driver was too aggressive on the road). The restaurant associated w/the resort was fantastic. The excursions - I did a morning and afternoon snorkling trip - were fun (though they did forget me on the jetty one time) and the staff was friendly. Massage was okay. Scenery is beautiful.

Lastly, I accidently dropped my iphone in the sand right before leaving and they returned it to me in Kuala Lumpur. That impressed me greatly.

Room Tip: Dont think there is much difference in the various room types.

We stayed here in September 2013 and were quite disappointed with the quality of the room given the price we paid. We were ever more disappointed when we found out some friends of ours stayed in a similar hotel on the other island for a fraction of the price. The room is pretty basic and isn't catered to who's staying in it (we're a couple and the room had two doubles which made it quite cramped). There's a safe which is good but the room hadn't been cleaned very well at all. There's no TV and the shower isn't great either. The food in the restaurant was good but the staff ranged from nice and helpful to rude and dismissive. The beach is very nice but there's not much to do at night.

This is probably the best beach hotel that we have stayed at in Malaysia and ranks as one of the best anywhere. In my opinion much better than anything on Tioman, Gem or even Penang. Trying to give this hotel a star rating is a bit pointless. It's in such a fantastic location that it doesn't need the trappings like pools, mindless TV stations and over priced minibars. Having said that the room we stayed in was very clean and comfortable with great air con and shower. All the staff were great, very attentive, proactive, helpful, cheerful, spoke excellent English and confident. (The best I have ever encountered in Malaysia). The food was good and not overpriced, yes more expensive than usual in Malaysia but you get what you pay for and lets not forget that everything has to be brought over from the mainland. I have stayed in very expensive supposedly 5 star hotels in Malaysia that are nowhere near as good. Holidays are all about experience and memories. My everlasting memory of BuBu will be feeling totally relaxed, snorkelling with the kids off the beach in clean water watching the beautiful tropical fish, sipping the complementary cocktails and watching the kids playing on the incredibly clean beach (again probably the best I have encountered in Malaysia). I must also give a special mention to the guys running the watersports station, absolutely first class. The only negative during the entire stay was when a tourist boat moored at the jetty and those on board threw their litter into the sea (reminded me that I was still in Malaysia). In conclusion a fantastic hotel in an incredible location, world class staff, great food and compared to some of the other places we have visited good value for money. Definitely recommended.

Room Tip: If travelling with kids ask for a ground floor family room.

It was my girlfriend's and my first trip to Perhentian Islands. Despite the hassle in getting there (to Kota Bahru airport), with having to take connecting flights etc, it was an amazing 4D3N, and totally worth the trouble. From the moment we arrived, we were whisked off in the Bubu van to the jetty, where the ferry awaited us. We were impressed with how well everything was run, service was absolutely top notch.
We checked into a deluxe room, which was clean and modest. Do not expect luxuries like TV or a minibar, although we didn't care about all that. We just wanted to get out and snorkel around the jetty, laze on the beach all day long. Evenings we were each treated to 2 rounds of complimentary drinks (cocktails/beer/wines; most of the drinks menu was available for selection), a really nice gesture by the resort.
To sum it up, the beauty of Perhentian Island is captivating, and the whole experience is enhanced by the holistic service provided by Bubu, from spa treatments to airport transfers, you are in good hands, and only need to worry about getting a good tan, and the bill at the end of the holiday......

As most of the reviewers have noted, this is a 3 star facility but you don't come to these islands to sit in your room and watch TV.

The room is basic and clean and the toilets though small, are pretty modern.

The food, though expensive by Malaysian standards, is of pretty good quality. My children enjoyed the fresh croissants and rolls from the oven at breakfast.

The resorts on these islands seem expensive because they are off shore (so everything has to be brought in) and the season here is pretty short (pretty much everything shuts down during the monsoon.

That said, the snorkeling here is fantastic and the quality of the fish life, just amazing.

I can't wait to go back again.

Easy transfer from their mainland office as a starting point; the rooms were clean, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing ; the restaurant was excellent , a good variety of Asian and Western food cooked to a high standard; the staff were extremely friendly, helpful and professional. The beach was beautiful, crystal clear and clean. A PADI diving course was arranged through the resort for my husband and son. Had a couple of Thai massages that were very good too. We were really taken by the ambience of the place and couldn't recommend it highly enough.
