“The best snorkeling ever”
Reviewed August 8, 2013

We arrived without any reservation made beforehand, so we had to start looking for something. This was the 'best' place I could find with aircon (as I was travelling with my mum, we need it). It was a bit expensive, though. The room and the aircon was ok, but the only problem was that you had to pass over a little bridge to get to the place that it is absolutely disgusting and smelly. (If you stay here, you will think about this review). The smell didnt get to our room though. The snorkelling was incredible. The tour guide was always with us and when we went to see the sharks he was the only one who jumped into the water with us and tried to find the sharks, as there were none when we got there. The other tour guides just stayed on their boats.
The room wasnt cleaned everyday.

We stayed here for one night and one night only! It was the only place we could get a room when we arrived on Long Beach and we ended up paying a ridiculous price for a small, dark air con room. If I was paying budget price for this I wouldn't be moaning, but the fact we paid £25 for one night at this place was ridiculous. The staff were ok and location is good (if you want to stay on over crowded Long Beach), but my advice is move to Coral Bay. Beautiful and quiet beach and you get a lot more for your money.

Stayed there for 4 nights, the first in an A-Frame, the other nights in the longhouse. The prices are really good, and the area around the huts looks quite nice and green. Still, I think they could have done better. The staff seemed unorganized and overcharged with the bookings and weren't too friendly. Both bathrooms were only poorly cleaned when we moved in, with hairs in the drain and fecal stains under one of the toilet seats. The toilet flush wasn't working, which was an annoyance, even more so as it could have been fixed quickly, which shoowed us that they simply didn't care. Both toliet seats where in desolate condition, the first only lying on the toilet without any kind of fixation left, the other one not much better attached and decorated with a scorch probably caused by a cigarette.

An other annoyance was the extreme noise from the generators.

As we tried not to pay to much attention to these aspects we still had a pleasant stay, but don't expect much or invest more money if you care about such things.

Room Tip: A-Frame and Longhouse don't differ much, but try to get away from the diesel generators, means t...

Not much available for lodging on Long Beach. Got a dive package discount by staying at Matahari and diving with the Matahari Dive Shop. Good power, good location for beach and dive shop, great hot water, comfortable room. The owner and staff were friendly and very helpful. The dive groups were so small that I was the only diver most days with maybe 3 more on 2 occasions. (The dive gear was the only negative. Old and not in the best condition. But I would use them again and bring my own regulator.)

Cons: The bathroom had a fan that was open to the outside with no screen so the bathroom shower became a mosquito haven. No way to keep them all in your bathroom so they were in your bedroom at night. (LOTS OF THEM!)

The budget bungalows can be an option, but several are located right near the generators/air compressors which are extremely LOUD! They are also closer to the beach, but located right along a small creek that smells of sewage and decaying vegetation. This was part of the scenery that you had to endure every time you walked across the bridge to get to the beach. Disgusting to say the least.

Room Tip: Be sure to check for a room before arriving on the island. Our boat was there early in the morning...

I did a lot of research and from the reviews felt that Matahari was the best of the available choices. I set my expectations low but i was still disappointed. I was looking for a cheap AC room. Matahari was ok but wish id stayed at Ombak on Coral Bay, looked way nicer and only a short walk to long beach.

Pros
easy to find
right next to the beach bars, good restaurants
good free wifi in communal areas
cheap bungalows with a bathroom & fan for approx 60RM - would have done this if it wasn't for the mozzies
good AC & pretty reliable electricity if in AC room

Cons
There is a horrendously stinky litter infested swamp that you need walk through to get there (there is a raised walkway but its still pretty unpleasant, just try not to look down)
The guys who work at the chalets are v.elusive and rarely at the desk & not very friendly
Didnt clean our room once in 4 days, wouldnt have cared in an bungalow but we were paying 160 pn.
Its 160 for an AC room whether you are on the top floor with sea views or in a dark ground floor room facing inland - so luck of the draw to what is available when you arrive. They really should charge less for the downstairs, they're not as nice.

Room Tip: If you want a bungalow get the 2nd row back away from the stinky swamp, if you want AC ask for the t...

First, you don't get much for your money on long beach but when you're in paradise, who cares? Matahari offer a variety of rooms from very basic huts to Air Con rooms in a newer development (this is where we stayed). They fill up very quick so get there early in the morning - we came downstairs numerous
Mornings to find
People without accommodation on long beach as the weekend approached.
The air con rooms are still basic for the 160RM you pay a night but they're the best you'll get! The rooms were cleaned every 2 days and there are brooms everywhere so you can control the sand
In your room :)
The staff are really friendly here , D in particular. He occasionally takes guests for walks around the island and took us fishing the local way on Romantic Beach (well worth a walk/ kayak to!). He didn't charge and showed us so many things that really make your stay a hundred times better .
You do have to walk over a "swamp" full of local rubbish and it's a bit smelly but nothing troublesome and it's a great spot for seeing a couple of monitor lizards - the locals need to stop pouring rubbish in though,
I was angry to see a local worker (not Matahari) emptying his business waste there :(
Long beach is definitely the place to be on Kecil and Matahari is a
Good bet (shared toilets are exempt ;) they looked really dirty).

Stayed one night in a fan room. Was good value for money, nice rooms. Then stayed 3 nights in air con room with diving package. The room was nice and elektricity was working more hours then stated, so that was positive. The diving is very professional, those instructors are always happy and very patient. Really nice to start diving with them. Would recommend this place if u search for diving!
