“Great place, very polite staff”

I just came back from Shari-la last week and the experience was enjoyable. The resort is surrounded by lots of greenery which makes the resort close to mother nature. The Chalet is quite clean and i especially like the furnishing and interior design, as it's very elaborately decorated, equiped by basic amenities such as TV, bar fridge etc. The resort is also nearest to the jetty among other resorts and chalet at Coral Bay, which saves us a lot hassle and effort to carry our heavy dive gears around.

Friendly staff they have there, but the only bad experience was about the hot shower, we complained about it to the front office and they did sent people to fixed it twice but hot shower still not working.Other than that, overall experience was quite good.

The island is beautiful and the snorkelling is amazing. Coral Bay is a great beach with a few excellent beach restaurant/BBQ places. My boyfriend and I were looking for something more than a hut on the beach so chose this place. It isnt that bad really - the room was clean when we arrived and the bed and shower were good. There were just some little things that could have been better.
1) none of the standard rooms are very near the sea and they are very densely packed in so that you dont really feel like sitting on your veranda - because you will look into 4 other verandas and nothing else.
2) the rooms are really dark with tiny curtained pattern glass windows and dark wood walls and ceiling (i liked the designs but my boyfriend found it claustrophobic) which makes you forget where you are
3) Also the rooms are designed really strangely so there is no place to put your stuff and a couple of arm chairs inside the door which - if you sat at them - would be looking at the inside of the front door only.
4) you dont get your room cleaned - if you ask at reception they will come and tidy it up but they definitely didn't clean the sink during our 6 day stay
5) you only get one loo roll in the room and have to ask at reception for extra!

It wasn't so bad that we moved - we nearly did but couldnt be bothered in the end.

Just got back from 5 day stay at the Shari-La and only have good things to say. We got the standard room for 138 RM a night which included a good breakfast (toast/cereal/pancakes/any style eggs/fruit/great coffee) and having paid a lot more than that for worse rooms in much worse resorts we were delighted. The room itself was great value for the price. It is new so mostly sealed against all the wildlife/insects you'd expect on a tropical island - unlike a lot of the other places we heard about from other people we met. It is clean and tidy and the daily housekeeping with change of towels made our stay all the more comfortable. The satellite TV was an excellent extra to fall asleep to. The room is a little dark as it is in the rainforest but if that bothers you then you have got to ask yourself why you are inside during the day anyway! The staff were extremely friendly at the hotel - always cheerful and helpful and the view from the entrance to the hotel is breathtaking.
If there was one thing the hotel can improve it is their beach restaurant, just off the pier at the start of the beach. You'd think with such a stunning location they would make it a little more inviting with some music or by tidying it up a bit so it would become easily the most attractive barbecue on the beach. This really doesn't matter though as the other restaurants on the beach have a bit more life about them and serve cheap, good food. All in all, I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else on the island as nothing I saw, or heard about, was anywhere as nice as here.

We found the hotel by accident when we stayed on the main beach of the island. In general there is not much choice of luxury accommodation. A room with AC and breakfast or dinner is at least 150 MR on this island. We were quite impressed by the lobby, so we booked a room for the next day for the published rate of 144 MR incl. breakfast. The hotel still is a building site, but it was not a problem for us. The room was the nicest we saw on the island with 5 different kinds of wood on the walls and ceiling. The bathroom is small, but OK. There was a mini bar and sky TV. The breakfast was OK, but nothing special. Dinner was a lot better, but there are plenty of restaurants along the beach. Like in other places on the island the water from the tap can be salty. There is no freshwater pipe from the mainland. All water is bore water.
The resort is one of only a handful places with 24h electricity. Other places shut down in the morning and afternoon which is very annoying as rooms in general are pretty dark.

Still a work in progress - Shari-la, Perhentian Island

Not sure if the first 2 reviews are genuine ones - we thought it might not be but took a chance and went with it and stayed at Shari-la for 4 nights in August 08.

It didn't start well when at check-in, we were told that they did receive our reservation request (which we did some time ago before we got there with email - no way to do it on their website as far as i can see) but they had a big group from Kula Lumpur coming that day so they had to give away our standard room!! And that meant the only room available for us the first night was the ¨Deluxe¨ at 230 ringit. They offered it to us for 170 as it was their fault. To be honest, i could not be bothered to argue and ask for the rate of standard room (which is 144 ringit) so we took the deluxe for the first night. It was awful - it smelt damp, dark and it had 1 double bed AND a single bed which we assumed is the reason why it was ¨Deluxe¨ because you get another bed hence more room - but for a couple like us, an extra bed was useless really.

We got moved to ¨standard¨ room from the next day and it was actually better - more light, still smelt damp - my g.f. had to put tiger balm every night so that it would mask the smell! Bathroom was the usual ¨island¨ setup i.e. shower and toilet next to each other which we expected - but what we didn't expect was no hot water on the first day, no water at all on the 3rd day (and when there was, it was untreated which meant insects and leaves in the water) and sea water for your shower through out. I think when it rains heavy, their drainage system can't cope that well and this is the result - again, something that might get fixed when the place is finished and built but i wouldn't count on it.

The whole resort is on the north end of Coral Bay - so the location is good. But the resort itself is still a building site. The path to your room is still being built and most of their chalets/rooms are still being built.

Staff were ok but not that competent. Breakfast was included but make sure you go early as it goes quick and does not get refilled properly by the staff.

For what we paid (144 for standard, 170 for deluxe), this place is not worth the money. I would of thought there will be other places which are more value for money on Long beach.

We've traveled all over Asia (including some of the most remote places in China) over 4 months period and for the money we paid, we were able to get a lot better so you can't say we are not used to ¨remote¨ location accommodation.

Brand new hotel on the island. I stayed in a chalet with aircon, shower and toilet, double bed, TV with local and English-language movie channels.

Chalets are quite good and much better that most of what you can find on the Coral beach.

Staff is smiling, helpful and discreet.

The restaurant is the finest (cuisine) and classiest (tables, service) on the island.

Coral bay is an excellent spot for Diving classes (there is an excellent 5-star PADI center on the end of the beach opposite to the hotel). It is very silent during evenings and nights - perfect for people wanting to rest.

There is a 5-7 minutes walk across the island to the Long Beach where there are bars, music and lots of partying people every night. Loud music may last till 5 am.
