Shari-La Island Resort
Reviewed April 27, 2014 via mobile

The resort is located right next to the jetty. Standing at the open dining area of the resort provides you a scenic view of Coral Bay. Staffs are helpful and friendly.

Spent 2 nights in a standard room. Room and toilet was clean. Size of room was just nice for a couple like us. The only let down is their water heater system which turns on/off at all time and the weak wifi connection at the reception area.

Breakfast served was just some ordinary local food. However, tables were not cleaned properly, leaving food residues to attract ants.

What amazed me the most is their small, quiet private beach. Very fine sand and clear water. Snorkels, life jackets and fins were available for rent at RM5 each. Great experience having fishes surrounding me when I fed them bread.

The resort also offers snorkeling trips with RM25 for short and RM30 for long trip.

Overall, this place is recommended if you opt for a not-so-backpacking style of a stay.

Don't expect a 5star hotel on this part of the Perhentian Islands as is targeted for the budget traveler. But for what its worth, this place is really good compared to the other accommodations.

We took a standard room which was small but clean and comfortable. We can't complain, came with breakfast, hot water showers and a great 'private' beach. Golden Bay is their best asset as during the mornings the snorkelling here is excellent. The long beach chairs, combined with very few people around makes it wonderful.

Plus we swam with shark cubs (black tips - harmless) everyday as they tend to swim in the shallow waters here.

They also have budget rooms for backpackers but do expect it to be really basic with cold showers and one would have to air the room out as it does get really stuffy. But the standard rooms of obviously better and cost a bit more.

We stayed here twice on the first and last day of our time in Coral Bay as it was booked up the other days. Shari La was much nicer and better value than the other place we stayed (Senje). Stayed in the standard rooms (bungalow/chalet) which were nice, rooms have a fridge, air con, 24hr electricity and hot water, all of which are rare on the island! Good location, breakfast is included which had a good selection. We found the staff to be very helpful. I would recommend booking ahead of time as the Perhentian Islands do not have a huge selection of good accomodation- when we arrived on the island, we managed to get the last room! The restaurant does a BBQ each night which was really good.

Rooms were clean but were too dimly lit with a dodgy lamp on the table which would turn on/off when the table drawer was opened and closed and when we walked over a section of the floor. The shower water temperature was difficult to adjust: water from the water heater was consistent but was not effective enough to heat the water enough; the lever on the wall provided much hotter water but it was inconsistent, sometimes getting cold. Towels had brown spots on them. The bathroom had a ventilation fan which let in many mosquitoes and a door that wouldn't close properly so the mosquitoes could enter the room, although they did provide a mosquito repellent machine which helped a lot. The electricity was a bit dodgy as it would sometimes go off for a few minutes. No kettle or hot drinking water source provided so you couldn't make your own drinks, but there was a fridge in the room. There was a sign in the room encouraging guests to refill their water bottle in the hotel's restaurant but when we tried, we were told that they didn't provide that service. The buffet breakfast was average, with margarine and crappy jams to go with the toast, porridge with several dry toppings and a small selection of other things like fried noodles which were pretty decent, margarine-cooked (therefore strange tasting) eggs from an egg/omelette station, curries, pancakes/waffles/french toast, instant mash on one of the days, dry-looking salad, some local fruit and free flow coffee, tea and cordial juices.

Staff at reception were incredibly helpful, when we needed any information and a first aid kit. There are a few private beaches near the chalets with beach chairs and a cafe, which are pretty good for snorkeling and swimming as there are many things to see underwater and the waters are a lot calmer than Long Beach on the other side of the island. Location is good for arriving and leaving the island as it is right next to the jetty. The restaurant's outside seating area had some very pretty views of the ocean. The chalets had drying racks outside and a small porch which was nice to sit on in the evenings.

I thought this hotel looked dark and gloomy in the pictures but the walls are actually quite stylish and unusual. We stayed in two different rooms due to it being busy. Both had patchy but adequate hot water and quite low lighting, but they were clean and comfortable. We were a few minutes walk from the office and beaches but the paths are lined with little waterfalls and some ocean views so I didn't mind, and being at the back meant a quiet nights sleep. We were glad we stayed here as we were right in the thick of things and next to the ferry jetty.

Room Tip: There are rooms closer to the water but you might have to book early for these.

The staffs at the reception are excellent. Credits to them as they helped me to contact our ferry operator as we have lost our tickets enroute home.
The rooms are pretty basic. The only set back is the hot water shower which doesn't work.

This hotel has a very big location, my room was further in the back of the hotel and far from the beach. I don't really like this hotel, even the staff were friendly and the room was clean. With the location of my room, the value that I paid was not satisfy me.
