Coral View Island Resort
Reviewed April 24, 2014

Glad that we found the Coral View Island Resort Restaurant, even though we didn't stay here ( we stayed at the neighboring resort ,Perhentian Island Resort ),but most of our lunch and dinner time ,we spend it here.
Yes, we mailed the resort , about 4-6 months before April 2014,and they replied ,that they just can accept stays of a minimum 5 nights , because they are full already.
The property is located on a cape , stunning view could be seen in both directions.
We always sat on the nearest table possible to the beach.Staffs are friendly and helpful. Some Squirrels running up and down the tree, and at one time we are lucky to witness a flying squirrel resting on one of the tree.
A Malay Chinese pakcik ,(possibly the owner) ,greeted us on every visit , and he made us a delicious grape juice by himself ! Reasonably priced food , generous portion , and all foods that we sampled tasted delicious.
The sea in front of this resort is rocky ,but it has the clearest water among all other beaches we snorkeled at.Diverse marine lives could be seen here.A 5 star PADI dive center ,located not far from the chalets ,and i observed that its the busiest dive center in the whole island !
We could not say anything about the villas ,because we didn't stay there, but , if we visit Perhentian Islands again ,definitely we would try to stay in this Coral View Island resort !

Room Tip: Sea view Chalets would be very nice

Had an excellent stay in ocean view chalet. Staff are helpful and friendly. Must book the ocean view chalet to enjoy the view. Soft white sandy beach & Snorkeling on reef (plenty of big fish) just 100 meters outside your front door. Taking fast water taxi to other resorts and other islands is cheap US$3 return (double after 7pm). Tuna bay is also a great spot. Resorts in big island are more suitable for families and small island resorts are more suitable for younger people and backpackers. Overall, a great snorkeling experience daily- a real treasure island.

Starting with the good points this hotel's in a beautiful location with great riffs for snorkeling right on the beach. The water is very clear and you can see a lot of animals in the water right there. As there are only a couple of resorts on this part of the island, the beach doesn't get too crowded either.
The food at the restaurant is great (disregarding the commonly bad breakfast throughout SEA): best roti canai and very good seafood. The hotel has also some very friendly staff that makes the stay worthwhile.
The whole place however seems to need a little rework. The rooms are very dark and smell of mould. The air-conditioning was very old and noisy and the bathroom's door did not close anymore. With this in mind, I thought the price was a little high, as I'm used to different standards in other South East Asian countries. However, you do in the end pay for a great island and we still enjoyed our stay overall.

Room Tip: Take a room in the front rows to the beach, as the one's further up the hill seem to be even old...

We did a lot of research for accommodation as a non budget traveller to the Perhentian Island. We tried to book Tuna Bay 2,5 months in advance and they were fully booked.

We read some mixed reviews from Coral View but as we wanted AC there were really not much to choose from. We got the best available which was a family deluxe suite garden view. It smells a bit moist and the bungalow is very dark. It was very basic but livable and as expected.

After two days (after weekend) we asked if there was any seaview available and we were in luck. The 100 ringgit more a night for a family deluxe beach front was definitely A LOT better and worth the money. So do your self a favor and pick these types, they a newer and larger, and more sunlight comes in and it's right on the beach.

We found the staff very friendly and the restaurant is one of the few places on the island that actually cares about giving you a service. When ordering, don't order breakfast, go for the a la carte, although we chose whatever we wanted (including a giant freshly squeezed orange juice) the price for 2 was still only around 50-60 ringgit.

Strolling the island we found Coral was a very good choice. Perhentian Island Resort does look better but is a bit secluded from the rest of the island. Tuna Bay is not situated on a very charming beach and it felt a bit touristy walking by. Besides just across on the small island is a lot of construction work going on that is interrupting the idea of a small quiet beach.

We only found one bar that served alcohol and we visited each afternoon. It was next to Coral View and was super charming will squirrels in the trees and a rooster walking around.

If you stay at Coral snorkeling is very accessible, we say huge turtles multiple times just outside the beach from Perhentian Island resort (next to Coral Beach). As a couple our best tip is to rent a taxi to take you to the deserted islands where you will enjoy peacefulness and more beautiful coral.

The Islands are not well kept, plastic everywhere is you just walk to the other side of the island. Coral view ad Perhentian Islands Resort are the best options.

Room Tip: Definitely chose the beach front. Now necessarily for the view but they are newer, bigger, cleaner a...

We stayed at this hotel for one night because there was no room available anywhere. Book in advance on weekends. Very expensive for the quality. The bed was old and incomfortable, the bathroom not great, sink was leaking on the floor. Not the best restaurant, try Watercolor.

We've visited Coral View twice, and will probably be back at least once. It is in a beautiful location, the snorkeling is great fun, and the staff is friendly and competent. The beach itself is covered with coral and rocks, but the neighboring beach is soft coral sand and easily accessible via stairs. We split our time between the good snorkeling and good sand. The restaurant is fairly good for ala carte orders, but we found the breakfast buffet a bit tired and disappointing. However, the boat transportation to the island was a major disappointment. I considered a 3 star rating, but since I don't know if the hotel is responsible for the boat ride, I bumped it up to 4. We had to wait on Kuala Besut jetty for 1 hour and 20 minutes while new group after new group boarded boats. Apparently we had been forgotten and our boat did show up 5 minutes after we called the office to complain. Lesson? Complain earlier and spend an extra hour on the island. On the way back, the boat was very overcrowded and there were not enough life vests for the extra passengers. (Nor were there child sized life vests) Things like this happen all the time in Malaysia, and are overlooked until an accident kills people and regulations are temporarily followed. But if Malaysia really wants to be a fully developed nation by 2020, both the private sector and government need to take health and safety seriously.

We decided to stay at the Coral View Island Resort based on other reviews and we were not disappointed. There are two very different beaches, one wide and hot in front of the family rooms and one with a breeze and more coral with excellent snorkeling almost as soon as you entered the water, in front of the Seaview Rooms . We snorkelled here a number of times and saw clown fish in just over knee deep water, huge numbers of parrot fish, and may others although much of the coral is dead. Further out from this beach we also saw reef sharks and a sting ray, Over off the beach from Perhentian Island Resort we saw turtles. We had 3 rooms, 2 family rooms on the broad beach with volleyball and wooden beach chairs with footests and one seaview room on the breezy beach with shade and beach lounge chairs. Other than the extra bed in the family rooms, the seaview rooms were excellent with their own lounge chairs on the balcony in front of the room. We were a mixed group of snorkellers, certified divers and divers taking the certification at the Pro Diver's World onsite dive centre. The Pro Diver's was excellent. Being right on the Island beside the Coral View Resort meant that the divers taking their certification could still spend time with us. One of our daughters had been certified in Thailand where she was picked up each morning at 7 am and didn't return until 6 pm. With the Pro Diver's World at Coral View Resort, they could easily walk over to the dive shop for their course and dives, and still take a break during the day with the rest of the family. It was perfect. The instruction was excellent and the facilities great. Being able to do the confined water dives on the beach next to the dive shop was a great plus - no long boat rides. Stan was a fantastic instructor and when one of the girls had trouble with her ears he was very patient and spent extra time with her at the end to assist her with her skills. We would highly recommend Pro Diver's World, Perhentian Besar next to the Coral View Resort. They are the only dive shop on Perhentian Besar that uses the beach right next to the resort which greatly reduces the time you have to spend travelling to the dive sites. We also spotted monkeys in the trees next to Pro Diver's and a flying fox in the trees infront of our seaview room.

Room Tip: Seaview rooms are great value and on the breezy beach with the snorkelling just steps in front of yo...
