Perhentian Island Resort

Hi,

we went to PIR, because we were looking for a quiet place to relax and go snorkelling. And that is exactly what we found.

We chose the PIR because of the beach and the pool. The beach was as promised: Beautiful, clean, lonely. The pool is not worth mentioning. It is small and does not have sea view. I could only imagine it for parents with very young children

The restaurant is not recommendable though. It is very expensive for a standard buffet with nothing special, abround 46RM++ each. Breakfast 36RM++. The menu was a little better, but still I'd rather go to Coral View or walk to Mama's. Of course, you could also go by water taxi.

The rooms of PIR are nice, but not worth the price. Their cheapest room, a superior room, does not have sea view although it is 310RM. We can still recommend it if you do not want to take a boat or walk the this beach every day.

If you rent a canoe (10-15RM/hour) and paddle to the next bay (turn right from the beach) you reach a quiet beach which is nice for snorkelling. BUT don't leave your belongings at the beach. The locals told us that there are thieves waiting for you to leave it unattended...You can just put all your belongings in a water pack, put it in the canoe and have the canoe bound to your ankle while snorkelling.

We booked this hotel through an agent in Malaysia. We had a 'special rate' (nett, no taxes, including breakfast). Although for Malaysia it was still a rather steep rate. The first room we were given was so bad (we didn't even want to use the bathroom because it was so dirty) we asked for another room. The next day we were given another room which was slightly bigger and better - but not much...The curtains were crooked, hanging only barely from the ceiling, and they could not be opened. And everything in the room was OLD, not nice at all. Since we stayed a couple of days, we sometimes had the chance to also peek into other rooms - probably not the ones with special rates, since they looked nicer and had coffee and tea making facilities (inclusdng the coffee and tea, we just had a crooked water kettle....). So be aware what room you are given. The cabins closer to the waterfront tend to be nicer than the ones a bit further away (the ones with the so called "garden and pool view").' Anyway, we will never go back to a resort that treats its customers this way!

Despite all the reviews, I decided to stay at Perhentien Island Resort for the beach. Which, i must say was probably the best beach on perhentien and the water is great! sandy bottom with amazing blue water. However, I kept going over to the coral view resort side to snorkel because there was more interesting sea life on that side. In fact, the two beaches were so near each other, had i known earlier. i would have stayed at coral view. However, PIR looks like a self-contained european beach resort, if that is your style.

We stayed in the semi-suite and the rooms were ok but very poor value for money. the toilet was really quite gross, the toilet bowl looked like it had endless pee in it and the flushing system wasnt working properly. I was quite disturbed by the state of the toilet. The resort offered boat trips to kuala besut jetty but the timings were not suitable (fixed timings there and the return timings were 8am and 12pm). We found that when we arrived at the kuala besut jetty, there were many boat operators willing to take you to the island, and let you leave the island at 4pm, maximising your stay on the island. all for the same fee of 70rm.

The staff do try to be nice. While they could not change our rooms to a king sized bed, they did let us have a 3pm late checkout (after much negotiate and and eventual hunting us down at 3pm to make sure we check out), the staff were generally pleasant, but would not go out of their way to assist.

Food wise...we had breakfast at PIR which was ok (not great), but compared to the coral view side of the island...it was expensive. we ended up walking over to coral view (and the other places, like watercolours and mama chalets) for food. Defn try the seafood bbq at Watercolours.

Diving....i would say Perhentien Island Divers is more for snorkellers and not for hard-core divers. It is the type of place if you want to catch one or two dives in. The Divermasters there were really friendly and great, but they were very casual about time..."9.30am-10am starts" and were really flexible, but it would be difficult to get more than 2 dives in a day with them. We tried going to the spa but it was fully booked.

You can be adventurous and trek all the way to the Cocohut beach (you have to trek through a forest to get there..beware the mossies...we ended up taking a boat back to PIR)

Overall, I really enjoyed Perhentien...the diving is easy and pretty, the beach and waters are awesome. I've stayed at Cocohuts and Abdul Chalets before and given what they have now done to that beach (concrete slabs and a jetty!) i would avoid that beach as i feel its overcrowded and ruined. Mamachalets looked nice (with Turtle bay divers, one of the best dive operators on the island) but i didnt like how they had rocks with a wire mesh in front of the resort. If i had to go back again, defn coral view-beach front chalets (and they have a masseur on the beach!)

The room is overpriced. The cleanliness is ok. but the bathroom is dim, the towel is worn-out, the worst thing is the water is ferrugineous.
but the beach of PIR is very very charming.

I've been to numerous resorts in Malaysia with low to average price range so I know not to expect a lot in terms of facilities and room conditions and this resort is no different.

The reception staff seems to be short handed and busy all the time but they did manage to help us out with our transportation problems. Restaurant staff were friendly but the best was the diving/water activities crew. They were really helpful, gave us good tips and the boat crew as well. If you want to travel from the bigger to the smaller island, you can just ask them and they will get you a boat taxi at a way cheaper price than what other taxi services would cost. The smaller island is more happening in term of nightlife and full moon parties, and there are more "convenience" shops there compared to the bigger island.

We had a snorkeling package included and it was definitely worth it. We were taken to 3-4 different spots and every single time the captain spot a sea turtle he will just stop the boat and let everyone down at no additional cost.

The ponds were all not maintained and I think its now a breeding spot for mosquitoes and the pool looks a little off (I can't point exactly what, if its the color of the water or the clarity or whatever but it is a little off). That's okay though because we were spending all our time at the beach anyway.

The only good thing about PIR (Perhentian Island Resort) is that they have their own so called private beach, that's really amazing compared to all the other beaches we went to on all the other resorts on the bigger island. Really soft white sand, and clear waters. You can just snorkel around the area without heading out to the open waters with a boat. There's a smaller "cove" area beside the jetty and when the tide sets in you can even find reef sharks by the rocks. So that was a good experience.

Food wise, don't expect much from the resort as they have local buffet and there are no restaurants or eateries so we had to walk to other resorts on the opposite side of the island for really good BBQ and seafood.

We also got there during Malaysia's school vacation period so expect a lot of teens and families going there as local retreats. But apart from that its pretty much quiet around the resort as it is located apart from the rest of the resorts that are too close to one another.

I will only recommend this place if having a nice beach is important criteria.

I'm not giving this five on one point - the food is shocking, and everything that you buy at the hotel is expensive/ overpriced.

This isn't a problem though, you get everything you need just round the corner 5 minutes walk, and the accomodation and location more than make up for it. The beach is the best, and there's quite good snorkling - we saw a good diverstiy of fish, but not the density that we'd seen at Pulau Tioman (Bagus Place - good honeymoon/couples spot btw).

We had been at Mama's place - a confused booking having been perplexed by all the mixture of reviews for hotels on Perhentian Besar - however, as soon as we got there, there was no shadow of a doubt that if you're honeymooning on Perhentian Besar - you stay at the PIR.

We were first going to stay at Watercolours - checked in and then 3 hours later checked out and checked into the Perinthian Isalnd Resort. Beach fantastic - just not enough loungers on the beach but had mats so no problem. Hotel fantastic with monkeys, lizards, squirrals and bats all around. The rooms need a bit of up grading but clean and fresh towels provided each day. Only problem was that the water is a yellow colour as the hotel needs to install a flter (causes no health issues and I am well as is my husband a week later after staying there for a week). A bit crazy but the hotel management are not willing to spend the money on the flter even though it only costs aboyt MYR2500 (GBP500). Breakfast was nice and cant complain there.... However ALL other food at the hotel is awful - cold, greasy, tasteless and expenisve. But hey a 10 minute walk over the concrete pier at the end of the beach and you are at Coral View - great food. No alcohol served but if you walk to teh restaurant and the walk through to the beach on the other side and then walk down the beach past the volley ball net there is a outlet selling beer and wine. Purchase there and then walk back to Coral View and they dont mind you drinking but if you are inside cans and bottles have to be place on the floor out of respect but of you are outside they didnt mind - very relaxed. The resort itself looked great and was fully booked all the time we were there.
All I can say if Perinthian Island Resort is nice hotel and nice beach just a shame about the food and water filter .
