Perhentian Island Resort
Reviewed June 30, 2013

We stayed at PIR from 22nd to 25th June 2013. We were greeted with an amazing beach. Crystal clear and could see some fish swimming in the waters from the jetty.

However, that's the only awesome thing bout PIR. God's creation was impeccable but the man made one was below our expectation.

Upon receiving the (superior) room keys, we were not ushered nor bags were helped to the room. That was fine becoz we couldn't wait to go to the beach. Lo and behold, the room was like a cheap motel's room. Their cheap laminated flooring was icky, lights were so dim and furniture was lopsided. The view was horrible!!! We complained and was put into another 'superior' room which had a better finishing and the swimming pool view. We wanted an upgrade (willing to pay for it) but were told resort was full.

Most of the staffs were not cheerful nor do they greet. Either they missed the memo that they're working in service industry or just couldnt care less. We met 2 of the housekeepers which were helpful. Service at restaurant was bad and we felt so sorry for those who paid for fullboard. Breakfast spread was awful with limited choices. We would expect this sort of service and f&b from a bed & breakfast inn but not when you're paying rm4xx a night!!
We had dinner once (no choice and too hungry) but was dissapointed. It was too expensive. Wouldn't mind paying big bucks but not with that quality in return.

Let me think positive bout PIR: water heater was excellent. Snorkeling team were pretty good. Maybe that's it. Oh, friendly housekeepers.

Oh ya, this is the first time we find there's no General Manager manning the resort as each staff do not seen to be well coordinated. Maybe he's on leave or hiding in the office.

Just to note that they don't have in-room telephone (anything, pls walk all the way to the reception- bit scary at nite), no TV, no night entertainment nor activities.

PIR needs to improve tremendously. They will lose second time customers. Next time we will try to stay next door and just walk abit to the amazing god given beach.

Their beach is by far the best beach in the big island n perhaps the whole perhentian (ok maybe I'm biased).

We stayed here for 3 nights in June for our honeymoon. We pre-booked a transfer from Kota Bharu airport but a lot of people organised this at the airport. The transfer was a minibus with other travellers staying at different resorts. Be warned, do NOT expect luxury accommodation here - it it basic and not very clean (we found food wrappers under our bed and headboard was covered in stains) but the place gets away with it for the beach alone - the best on the island by far. There is good snorkelling - turtle point is just off the beach (we saw a turtle on our first day) - but the snorkelling trips organised by the resort werent great and with big groups (18-25 people). It is the same price to organise privately with a water taxi. Food was average, lots of people took the meal package but we advise against this as the seafood bbq at nearby tuna bay was amazing (took water taxi) and Coral Bay resort bbq was delicious. Beers available on main beach 5 mins walk away.

The place is on a nice beach of Perhentian Besar, just facing Kecil. Rooms/bungalow would need refurnishing, but comfort is enought if You are not looking for luxury hotel.
Avoid meals at restaurant, quality is definitly below standard, We threw away the meal voucher we had and we went to have meals on other beaches that You can reach with 10 min walk over the stairway. There you can choose fresh fish and get quality with reasonable prices

We booked 3D2N package stayed for 5 Semi -Suites Rooms for the best sea view about 3 months prior our trip. Big disappointment upon checking in were that only 3 suites available and the other two need to stayed in a deluxe rooms.
I was one of the family who sacrificed to stay in the inner row. Our room was not well lighted and ants all over the place. The view and feeling was indeed very different from the sea view!

The best thing about this resort is the beach and in faact, it is the place to watch turtle and it is called "Turtle Bay". We were very lucky to witness a turtle layed eggs on the beach!

Service was okay and infact, the Manager really apologize for the misarrangement.

Overall, a very enjoyable trip.

Room Tip: Stay in Semi-Suites with sea view

Fantastic beach. Turtles only 20 meters away from the beach. Very central so can take boats to lots of different islets.Stunning beach. Did I mention the beach?

The room was okay for a beach resort and we did not go in having any expectations as we had done our research.

HOWEVER, we expected the staff to be friendly. They were bored and did not care really. Everything was too much effort. There were flies everywhere at the restaurant. When we asked the staff why this is, they just shrugged their shoulders.

On the day we arrived, we were supposed to be picked up by the boat at 11.00. We arrived on time from our flight to the jetty only to be told the boat left 10 mins before we arrived. We were told to wait. While we waited, a Malay family came and registered for the boat to go to the same resort. Somehow, they jumped the queue and got the 12 o'clock boat. The boat being too small to take 2 families we were told to wait until 2.00 for another boat. With a small child and a baby we waited. There were no apologies when we mentioned this while checking in.

The private beach for this resort is the best I have visited. However, every morning, the hotel stacks a pile of rubbish on the beach. Every day, it is collected only mid afternoon. So the rubbish bags, piles of them, stay on the beach until the boat to collect it arrives. Then it is a further 2 hrs till they can load it all on and go on their way. So from early morning to late afternoon, this area is dirty, smelly and ruins the beautiful beach. The hotels does not give a damn.

This is the worst hotel in the best location I have stayed in.

Dont stay here. Come here only for the beach.

We booked for 3d2n package with 2 kids at this resort a month before the trip. We arrived at the Kota Bahru airport 2 days before check in and heading south to Kuala Terengganu by bus - Stay for two days at Kuala Terengganu and heading back north to Kuala Besut by taxi.

Our boat to the island was scheduled at 11.00 am, - a day before we made a called to the front desk resort just to confirm the boat scheduled and check in time.

The receptionist pick up the call and told us that the check in will be at 3.00 pm and there will be 2 boat time to the island -11.00 am and 2.00 pm. The boat will take merely 45-60 minutes to the island. The front desk suggesting us to take the 2.00 pm boat so that we don't have to wait longer until 3.00 pm for check in.

As been told, the boat leaved jetty at 2.00 pm and we arrived at the resort jetty an hour later. Surprisingly nobody wait for us at the jetty, so we brought our own baggage and walked around 5 minutes to reach the front desk for check in.

The check in process took 15 minutes and the receptionist told us that we missed the lunch. We supposed to get our lunch on the arrival day, but the buffet lunch time just over at 2.30 pm.

Who told us to take the boat at 2.00 pm at first place? and nobody at the front desk seem to be responsible for the information given to us. Imagine after 2 hours land transfer + 1 hour boat ride with 2 young kids. They starting to throw out the tantrum. Hungry + angry mixed together..

Finally after 30 minutes, the front desk agreed to serve us ala-carte menu. So we just waited at the resort restaurant. 40 minutes later, 4 plates fried rice has been served. Fortunately the taste better and it cover both our anger and hunger.

Overall was good and clean. The air-con, hot water - fully function. Bathroom - with tab.

Swimming pool is closed for maintenance.

The beach is the best part. White sandy beach and turquoise water, but sometimes if you lucky you will get clear turquoise water and it all depends on the wind and the wave on the day before. Because the bigger wave will bring more debris to the beach which would affect the visibility on the next day.

The buffet food served was average but some of them taste good. We saw some of the guest ordered ala-carte menu, and most of them have to wait 20-30 minutes for the food to be served.

reception - between poor and average. food - average + good , deluxe room - good. beach - good

Room Tip: Deluxe room located at the second row of the resort, slightly behind the sea view row, but still we...
