“Great Dive Lodge...Quality Instruction....Relaxing Environment”
Reviewed July 13, 2011

If you are going to go diving in the Perhentians then you owe it to yourself to stay at the Bayu Dive Lodge and dive with Alu Alu divers. I have stayed with them on several occasions and taken several PADI courses with them and received by far the best scuba instruction I have ever had. They may expect a lot from you but it will be rewarding and you will feel like you have aquired the skill level needed for the course completed. Martin, Saana, Maryanne, Riina, Flo, Donny and Paulo were patient, courteous, professional and thorough with equipment preparation, instruction, briefings and guidance. The equipment in top quality and maintained, the facilities are comfortable and the dedication to quality instruction and procedures is evident. Safety equipment and contingency planning is in place and is part of the emphasis during their diving. You will not be disappointed with your decision to dive with them. The entire staff make you feel welcome and will go above and beyond to make your stay fun and enjoyable.

I am currently living in Bangkok and prefer the dive atmosphere in the Perhentians over most of the Thai islands and beaches.....plus it is a very economical place to stay and dive. I just hope I can go back one more time before I have to leave southeast Asia.

It was the second trip back to Alu Alu. We had a pleasant experience the last time we were there to dive so we decided to head back again. This time, we too had a good time there. The only downside to the trip was our luck with the dives. I guessed we were unlucky to have bad visibility on the last day and we didn't manage to see more than what we seen the last time.

Staff were helpful and courteous. Dive instructors are professional and friendly.

Well, maybe the quality of the food could be better, a bit less oily. But on a whole, quite delicious, probably given the fact I am not a fussy eater:).

So if you are not looking for a 5 star accommodation but just something nice and easy. This is for you:)

Me and friends went for a stay in Bayu and took a 3days 2nights snorkeling package. Upon arrival, we can already feel the friendliness of the staff and was delighted when we see our room. It has everything that we wanted. Just a little note, you might not want to stay at great white(the one beside Alu-Alu) as it can really be noisy at night.

The food portion there are delicious and have a few types to choose from instead of being set. However, if you are in a hurry, it may not be a good choice to dine there as it take quite long for the food to reach us. BUT, we dont mind at all as the purpose we are there is to relax and just chit chat while waiting =)

During snorkeling, there are 8 of us and only 2 of us can swim while the other 6 are terrified of water. There are 4 of them who accompanied us and they truly understand that we can't swim therefore, the first place is to somewhere shallow where we can practice first. After that, all four of them took care of us really well. They even bring us out into the deeper see one by one so that we can see more, experience more and has always keep watch of us. Credits to James, Flo, and two abangs =)

We absolutely love the place and the staff. They filled us up with lots of good memories =)

We planned a relaxing leg on our trip across Southeast Asia and therefore went over to the Perhentians. The islands are idylic, and it is probably the closest thing to paradise on Earth, with clean and pristine beaches.

However, what should have been a relaxing break in our trip, turned out to be a stressful experience as a consequence of having chosen the Bayu Dive Lodge (BDL) for our retreat. The BDL:

(a) is right on the shore, but do not think to go swimming in there, as the waters are extremely shallow and it is absolutely impossible to get there in the water. You need to take a boat to get some where else in the water;

(b) is probably good for those who like scuba diving or want to learn it (as the name of this place suggests). Therefore, if you do not want to do neither of those things, just stay away!!! The vibe is strange for those who do not want to do scuba diving (we felt, in fact, ostracized and left aside by the personnel)...so...if you want to relax and have some "sun and beach" holidays, go some where else!!;

(b) the worst of the BDL are: (i) the personnel, who, as anticipated in the preceding paragraph, are great in almost ignoring those guests who do not want to scuba dive; and (ii) the lodges (well...I would better say "shafts"). These have paper thin walls (you hear any thing around you, including, of course, the people who were drinking and eating at the nearby restaurant!!), were not entirely clean, and are extremely basic. One of the nights, there was some kind of animal running in between the roof and the paper put on the inside (we could see it moving!!), and the personnel did not do anything...which meant we did not sleep at all during the whole night!!!!

Conclusion: I strongly recommend you go some where else if you do not want to have your Perhentian visit messed up.

We stayed at Bayu for a couple of nights because Abdul Chalet was fully booked. The rooms are nice and air conditioned and so is the setting, the bay where Bayu is located looks lovely, too bad all the corals are dead in that part of the island, hence no snorkeling is possible. I had read in a comment here on Tripadvisor that, being Bayu connected to the diving school Alu Alu Divers, the staff would pressure guests to buy the diving course/rent the equipment. I didn't feel this way, everyone was very laid back, reason why we did actually decide to go for the diving course, which was great (but you are not obliged to stay at Bayu to dive with Alu Alu, for the rest of our stay they picked us up from Abdul Chalet which was in another part of the island). A special thanks to Henrik who was our instructor! Regarding food at Bayu, it is not even that bad, but before you try it ask if you can go to the public toilet of the restaurant, you'll pass in front of the kitchen, then see if you still want to eat there when you come back!

Bayu dive lodge looks nice as long as you are looking at it on a web site. We took a seaview chalet but we didn't know that ON the sea also meant ON the restaurant terrace and ON the kitchen (the one from the next lodge). That means that when you go to bed, you can't sleep until the last person has left the terrace and the kitchen has closed. And when it's the case, then the engines of Alu alu diving club are roaring all the night ! Service was really poor with always the impression to bother the manager. Walls of the Chalets are paper thin and the materials make it an oven as soon as you don't put air con. Beach is good but not as egood as other places of the island. Critics (including the ones here) often prey the diving center (Alu Alu Diving Center), which is indeed next to the lodge and very fine,but that's not bayu dive lodge. We were at Abdul Chalet during the same stay and definitely regretted not to stay at abdul the whole trip. Run away from that place !

Nice rooms in a good location. Had some issues with our reservations but the staff got everything sorted out in the end. The food was good; with the all inclusive package a good deal if you ordered everything you were allowed. If you don't eat a whole lot it would be cheaper to pay as you go. The food was way better than the all you can eat barbecue next door, which should be avoided at all costs. The diving was excellent with friendly divemasters and some diverse and enjoyable sites. The equipment was in good condition. The web site said that all equipment would be on the boat and ready to go for diving, though this was not the case. We had to haul all our own equipment to the boats, and help haul the tanks back. Not a big deal, but if I'm paying to be a lazy diver, that's what I'd like to receive.
