Stayed there 5 nights at the end of the season - 30% discount for 5 nights. Overall, I liked the place but would say it is more suitable for family and couples. Room was average, garbage still around from previous guests. Food is good for the island (considering the other places weren't serving anything but noodles), price for beverages is 50% higher than just down the beach. Rose and staff are nice but not much attention to detail. Never did get soap, no one ever serviced the room for garbage during the five days, had to ask for rubbish bin, mosquito coils, etc. She did allow me to use her internet connection without charge. If I were to go again, I'd stay at KBC down the next beach for a better atmosphere.

We arrived early morning and was happily greeted by the host, Rose - friendly and charming. She is such a good cook and all the food served during our 3 days trip was superb and delicious.

After reading all the comments, we were actually not disappointed with the rooms. We stayed at Bamboo (RM80 per night) because in an island, you cant expect a 5 star hotel facilities such as marble tiles floors or air cond rooms. Bear in mind, this is a environmentally friendly beach and i doubt if they make 'enough money' to supplies all the amenities. Toilet, i have to agree it's a bit filthy but then again i dont think they have enough manpower to manage!

Overall, this is a great place to be and i am definitely going back, and this time i will bring insect repellent!

It's really a pity - the people from Qimi Chalet, the food and the location is amazing, BUT unfortunately the accommodation is really disappointing.

We decided to stay at Qimi Chalet due to the positive feedback on Tripadvisor we read in May 2009. After visiting their homepage we booked the VIP Kembodja Chalet for 9 nights. When we arrived we had to stay one night in the Tree House due to a misunderstanding. The night at the Tree House was one our horriblest nights we ever had. At night there came animals (maybe rats or lizards) into our room eating our sealed food packages. Furthermore the bed sheet and pillows were musty, as well as the bathroom. For that night we had to pay 130 RM!

After that night we moved happily to the booked VIP Kembodja Chalet. Unfortunately the room doesn't met our expectations we had from the photos in the Internet. When you enter the room you can smell the humidity and you can see mold on the walls! Everything is exactly like "Sandra-Bruno" describe it in their review. We decided on short notice to go back to Gem Island Resort - there you can enjoy for some Ringgit more a wonderful accommodation.

Usually we don't write reviews and we don't want to harm anybody, but we were so disappointed about the accommodation that we want to keep other travelers from a unpleasant surprise. We didn't expect a luxury accommodation but for 200 RM we expected a comfortable and clean chalet in the jungle!

Rose, her husband and all the others are very friendly, the food is delicious and the accommodations have once been built lovingly. We would have loved staying there and enjoying their hospitality and the nearby beautiful beaches! Hopefully they take advantage of the reviews and make some renovations in order to regain a wonderful hideaway in the jungle!

- Setting : located on a little beach, very calm. The beach itself is pretty small and not that beautiful to my opinion, as it is low tide most of the day. When it's high tide it's ok and pretty. But there are many huge urchins in the water (it sometimes is very hard to swim as you're scared to touch them). Also, the water was not so clear when we were there, but we've been told it was because of the rain a few days before.
The beach at the north (next door) is very long, beautiful and deserted.
You need to walk between 5 and 15 mins to reach other resorts, where there is more animation.

- Rooms/chalets : that was THE negative point of our stay. We planned to stay 5 nights there, but decided to leave after 1 night. We were certainly not expecting a 5* hotel (considering the price, location etc), but still, we consider some "basics" were not respected at all. For information, we were in the VIP Kembodja Chalet (the most expensive one) : humidity rate in the room was about 99% (seriously, we could hardly breath : if you have asthma, you could get in serious troubles in a room like that). It was so humid that you could see big black stains everywhere on the walls and ceiling. The aircon was just for decoration as the only thing it did was throwing some more hot air (a solution would have been to open our door, but then good luck with the spiders and mosquitoes). Cleanliness : upon arrival we expected a clean room, but it was not. The sheets and pillows were really smelly (humidity again), there was sand everywhere in the bathroom (clearly, it had not been cleaned, not even a little), bits of papers, and even bandages ! As for the huge spiders and the mosquitoes (INSIDE the room, since the bathroom door, which has an access to the outisde, could not close) I will not say anything but only let you imagine :-)

Our chalet was up in the jungle, maybe that's why it was so bad. I read/heard other similar reviews : ppl in the jungle complaining, as the ones on the beach did not.

- Other : FOOD is awesome, Rose is very good cooker ! We had a huge BBQ fish and it was delicious. That's one very good point. Service might be slow, but it's the same everywhere in Malaysia. SERVICE/STAFF is very kind, polite, and at your disposal.

Overall, we've been very disappointing. It's the first time I write such a review (I always think ppl exagerate etc) and I'm sorry I do it... Our room was too dirty and we had a very hard time at night trying to breathe properly (not talking about my 50 mosquito bites !), I was this close to go on the beach with my pillow.

Too bad, because Rose and her staff are really great. I hope they'll manage the problem of dirtiness and humidity.

Beware of Qimi Chalet, a cordial welcome drink is just a sheep under the wolf skin.
We stumbled through mud, clay, puddles and buttress roots before climbing a set of steep, uneven, dirty and mouldy concrete steps to get to the inhabitable musty room with insect hives everywhere and a congested shower area.

See photos of the following:

Room measure – 10 x 10 feet
Shower area – 3 x 6 feet

Door has no lock but shoddy latch, security zero.

The dark room was filled with ants on all walls, mozzies and bugs were unwanted bonuses. The shower floor was disgustingly slippery amidst the stagnant drainage. No toilet rolls were provided let alone paper tissue in the room.

The only ‘luxury’ in the room is the table fan hung on the wall, which you would be reluctant to use as you don’t want it to blow all these bugs and wall dust unto you. Guess the above is sufficient to make your holiday HELL, there is no need to comment further on other items.

Most shockingly, the ill-Qimi Chalet charges the higher rates on the island. and when confronted with the complaint, the lady owner exploded in greve anger and evicted us on the spot. Being on an island, we could not seek police help and was worried that the weird lady owner would come after us with their ‘parang’, we chartered a boat and left the island instantly.

We stayed for 4 nights at Qimi chalet from 27 - 30 August in the Orchid Tree House Chalet.

The accomodation is basic but functional. Cold showers and simple accomodation are the order of the day here but we expected this and like the rustic feel of this.

Our chalet was perched up a flight of steps with a balcony looking through the trees to the beach. What really made our stay was the food and the friendliness of the owners. Rose made us feel very welcome and the food was amazing. We didn't order off the menu for dinner instead asked for what they were cooking that evening. Each night was incredible and easily the best food of our 3 weeks travelling around Malaysia.

Kapas itself is small and seemed very quiet. We dived each day with Aqua Sport Divers who are based a couple of beaches along (about 10 minutes walk). Although the visibility was poor (due to storms while we were there) the dive guys were freindly and professional.

If you want a simple place to relax and get away from it all this is perfect.

One tip, ensure you have cash with you as the chalets and dive shop do not take cards. We were a bit short and had to hop over to the mainlaind and make a 15 minute walk to the nearest ATM.

We celebrated our first anniversary at Qimi in early August.
KL-Marang : by bus (Sani Express). The drive was comfortable enough and we got to Marang around 5.30am
Marang Jetty - Qimi Chalet: by boat (Suria Link). The boat charges were expensive considering that Pulau Kapas is just 15 minutes away ( you can even see the island from mainland).

At Qimi Chalet we stayed in the cheapest hut (Bamboo) for RM80 per night. The only good thing about Bamboo is that it is right off the beach, so you can hear the waves gently crashing at night. There's no hot shower, the mattress & pillows were quite mouldy. We had to air and sun the pillows everyday. The mosquito net has holes everywhere. The toilet is REALLY small, you can hardly fit 1 person in. The hut's door has no lock, we had to stuff paper between the doors to shut it. This is only merely rectified on the 3rd day. Overall cleanliness is 4/10.

Food-wise, is excellent although it might be overpriced. I know that food price is expensive on islands but Kapas Island is really close to the mainland so we thought it was slightly overkill.

We had fun nonetheless because of the chalet's VERY close proximity to a neighboring long clear beach, and you just have to climb up some stairs (which were quite steep) to go to nicer snorkelling areas on the beach opposite Gemia Island (this would save you around RM25 ringgit). Do bring your own snorkelling gear or rent it from other chalets on other beaches at the jetty side because the ones that they have in Qimi is really old and run-down. Sunset is a great experience as the chalet itself faces the sunset.

We did scout other chalets/resorts on the island and found out that they are more or less the same, and decided to stay in Qimi because of the access to nicer beaches, & great food.
