Used to love this hotel..my 5th stay within the past 3 years.....wonderful room..the sea view..friendly staff.....facilities..breakfast...nearby wonderful chinese restaurant (outside of hotel which is 2-3 drive)..but oh my....you guys are going downhill....the view is still wonderful as ever, the facilities, friendly staff, good breakfast option are still the same...but the room when we came in smelt like something did not being dried properly and the pillows are soooo soft that other cheaper hotels which I had stayed-in have better pillows......overall we did have a wonderful time....time to improve guys...the not free wifi (RM25 for 24 hrs) is not cool at all with such room rate....the x-factor which makes me keeps coming back is slowwwllllllyyyyy sizzling out.....

The hotel is suitable for family gathering / holiday, it have indoor sport carter for children, and swimming pool is well separated by adult and children pool. The beach was long and nice, you can have beach football and volleyball along the beach.
Room is big,if you are with 3 to 4 family member in your this holiday, you may just book one premium room with two king size beds and the each bed was big enough for 2 person.
If you have your own transport, you visit the "City of Light" which about 15 mins driving distance toward north
There was an small town toward to the north, you can find a shopping mall and fast food restaurant.
The food serve in the hotel was very expensive but you can get some nice seafood outside the hotel with reasonable price which just right beside the main road (5 mins walk away from the lobby)
If you wanted to have some Chinese food, you can to go Cukai town which just drive 18 min toward to the south.

Room Tip: Room which facing the sea or premium room

When I wanted to make hotel bookings for a trip to Kerteh, a friend of mine suggested Resort World Awana Kijal. He said that is one of the best you could find in that area. And so we booked a place there. It was very last minute and we booked it from agoda and costs us about RM200 per night, which is quite reasonable, knowing it's one of tje best hotel there. My expectation was high before I arrived. But it went down drastically as I entered the room. The furniture is considered old but I can accept it. The bedsheet was like super old and out of fashion. To make it worse, it smells old. I was thinking to myself, I know they can't do anything to the structure and furniture, but at least change the bedsheet to a newer one please.

Other than that, I must say the breakfast they provided was superb and the service as well. However, the beach was very quiet and empty and i felt desertes. It should be a resort I expected.

Being a traveler in Kerteh, if you don't have ur own transport to commute there, you will find it difficult because the taxi fare there is super super high and unrealistic.

i went to awana during school holiday dec 2012.we stayed for one night,in the seaview room.i couldnt find fault of this hotel.minor glitches here and there, but nothing too major to spoil our holiday.check in was a bit slow-but the staff apologised profusely, besides my kids were already running around the pool/playground/giant chess area, thus,no boring/whiny kids made it bearable for me to stand in line for more than 30 mins.
we took connecting rooms, the seaview was breathtaking, rooms were fairly clean, basic amenities available-no complain.they have the best wading pool-it is ankle-deep,hence perfect for small kids/toddlers-i would say almost 0% risk of drowning!atleast i could relax by the pool.i agree with a previous reviewer about the inconvenience of having a single entry to the gigantic pool area.few times i was tempted to just climb over the gate to get to the pool,i don't understand the rationale of having only one entry.the resort should look into this.
only one issue i would like to highlight,i think the hotel should enforce strict policy on swimming attire.it tarnishes the image of the hotel when you see guests wearing normal clothing soaking in the pool.especially muslim ladies, there are proper swimming attire for those with hijab,no excuse on that.don't get me wrong,i am a muslim lady and i do wear hijab, and so i know that there are muslimah swimwear available,t-shirt and headscarves are a big no-no in the pool.c'mon, have some respect for other patrons of the pool.besides when you wear a normal t-shirt and headscarves into the water,it clings to the body and outlines the areas that are supposed to be covered in the first place,so doesnt that defeat the purpose?the swimsuit is made of a special kind of material to provide us with the protection and coverage that we need, plus it is more hygienic.just my thought on this:)
food wise, there is a kfc right in front of the hotel.mesra mall is less than 10 mins away-we only had breakfast at the hotel, and it was good.all in all,i will return to this place, surely.
btw the beach is not the white sandy beach kinda beach,it is more of a coarse/grainy sand, besides it was monsoon season when we were there, hence the high tide was dangerous for kids.the awesome pool kept the kids occupied,so there was no problem with that.

Room Tip: do request for sea view room

This is such a terrible hotel... The bed was full of ants as was the room, the a/c hardly pushed air and the customer service... OMG slow, rude & unhelpful. The "free" wifi is not free either... The bed, apart from having little ants running around in it, was hard and uncomfortable. It looks like the cleaning staff took a day off in 2011 and never came back to work. There is nothing to do here unless you like playing golf on a second rate course. The bars are all closed and the food is ok but room service is appalling. Stay away from this place unless you absolutely have to come here. This place hits a 10 out of 10 for terrible. Needs new staff, new management and an overhaul!

I should point out that I haven't actually stayed overnight in the Awana, however my husband and I live in one of the apartments in the grounds of the hotel and I go up there everyday to use the gym & pool, go for coffee and have lunch/ dinner.

The hotel promotes itself as 5 star but its certainly not by European standards. That said it is still a great hotel. It's huge and the architecture makes you feel as if you're in a gigantic open air hut.

There are 3 places to eat/ drink... Atrium Coffee bar which is very nice. It has soft chairs and sells delicious coffee, cakes, snacks and soft drinks. It also has a TV on with the news playing. There's also a large buffet restaurant upstairs but I haven't eaten here. Downstairs is the Waterfall cafe, looking out onto the pool. Here you can get local cuisine, European cuisine (including a Pizza oven), soft drinks and snacks. We eat here a lot. The soups (Yellow Mee, Mee Hoon and Tom yam) are delicious and cost about £3, which is expensive in Malaysia, but worth it. Service is always good.

There's also a bar off the main atrium which sells beer and soft drinks... no wine :( and there's a gift shop which sells clothes, sweets, crisps, essentials etc.

Within a 2 min walk of the hotel are a few shops & restaurants, including 2 chinese restaurants where you can get a full meal for under £2. In fact, a small bottle of perrier costs more! You can also get a beer in the chinese restaurants.

The pools are huge and there are play areas for children. The gym is large and well equipped.I don't play golf but there is a large golf course and driving range.

The hotel is on the beach so you can walk down and watch the waves, although the surf is to strong to swim in but it's a quiet, peaceful beach.

The manager actually took me up to see one of the superior rooms yesterday, and it was really nice. It had a sea view, (no balcony), but a large King size bed, bath and shower, tea & coffee making equipment, and it was very clean.

The hotel has a lovely spa attached. I've had a few treatments, and while they are not in the same league as in Dubai (my last home), they're still good value.

Mesra mall is just a 10 minute drive away and has ATMs/ supermarket/ cinema etc.

All in all a really nice hotel which I can definitely recommend.

Its obvious the hotel needs immediate refurb. Breakfast and meals are okay but options are limited. But I must say, it has a lovely beach, nice pool for the kids and adults and activities to do. It is ideal for a family...however, getting there is a nightmare--the best choice is to simply drive from KL or fly to Kuantan. Anything else will make you pay more for the exorbitant taxi fees.

The hotel staff at the transfer desk "seem" to conive" with taxis and you will pay at least 20USD for a trip anyway outside the hotel eg Mesra Mall which is only 5km away. For all those vegeterians outthere---the place has NO option for you.
