“Slightly outdated, still very nice..”

Very nice and affordable resort on the outskirt of Miri.
Big open lobby with friendly staff members.
I had a room of decent size overlooking the pool / bay that was nice, although a bit outdated.
The restaurant is reasonably ok, with a large buffet.
Best thing about this hotel is definitely the pool area, large and beautiful, without mentioning the 30 degrees water.
Also convenient is the fact that diving trips can be arranged from the hotel, and that the harbor is 2 minutes driving away.
Overall, a nice place to stay while in Miri.

Still an OK hotel, really, but perhaps it is time for some changes, espacially if they want to keep up with the resort developments next door, that will probably outshine this somewhat outdated resort. Lobby is nice, open and breezy (which is ok here in Borneo). The pool is really nice, although cleaning of the deck can be better (bird droppings everywhere) and the pool water is too hot. But as these are minor issue, no real complaints here.
Then the rooms, we had a room in one of the garden buildings. The rooms are cosy yellowisch decorated, but in need of an update, especially the bathroom. Everything is clean and functional, but feel free to take out the bath and please a nice shower, use bright tiles and place a good ventilation.
Staff was friendly, but my god, how many people do you really need? 6 staff at the gym (which was ok, bit cramped perhaps), while there is 3 people using it? 8 staff during breakfast (hmm, good breakfast btw) with 6 tables occupied (they were everywhere...), 5 staff at the spa with no-one there? And ask one question and none of theme knows. Oh well, not relevant for our experience, but one wonders...
To sum up: if you are in Miri, this is still the best choice and I believe value for money, because although outdated, still good standards and a nice holiday feeling. But i really wonder if this will stay so if newer hotels pop up (and they will, so check)

I have stayed hear on many occasions while i was working over there.

On arrival you are greeted with cold flannels & drink, just what you need in the heat.

The rooms are clean & the beds are so comfortable they are hard to get out of.

The spa is amazing and really good value for money.

The pool bar is great and the staff are really polite helpfull. Try the apple juice, it tastes just like drinking a granny smith apple. If you like cocktails there are plenty to choose from.

The food is amazing. Go for the buffet, that way you get to try everything.

All in all its a great place to stay.

Marriott is the best western style hotel in Miri - though the recently opened Meritz offers value in city centre. Rooms in the accommodation wings that run to either side of the main building are ok and reasonably well appointed. Not five star however due to usual issues in the bathroom (cracks, bit of rust etc). Best thing about Marriott is the property with walking areas, great pool, tennis courts and great lobby. The cafe does probably the best coffee in Miri with top notch service. The gym is also well appointed (not your usual pokey hotel gym).
Food: I work / live in Miri and would say that the Marriott has the best western style food, the breakfast buffet is particularly good. Wouldn't eat there for local food as 38 ringit for a laksa is a little extreme. The lighting in the restaurant at night is bright enough to think you are being interrogated and staff seem a little confused about bringing out food (dessert comes after mains right?) but otherwise its a nice experience. Definitely pick this hotel over the 'grand palace' and 'imperial palace' and Everly hotels, only competition would be the more remote Eastwood golf club which offers a different product.

Room Tip: go for a room in the main building

We have been coming to Miri City in Sarawak, East Malaysia on the island of Borneo for many years from the UK to visit relatives and friends. There is no exception this year where we returned and stayed at the Miri Marriott Hotel, about 3 miles from the city centre from 27th August to 2nd September 2012 – Room 1609. We have been staying in the Miri Marriott hotel for the past 6 years.

The hotel is situated on the west coast of Miri with splendid view of the South China sea. It is about 5-10 minutes taxi ride from the hotel to the city centre, costing 15 Ringgits; and about 20 minutes car ride from the Miri airport to hotel, circa 20-25 Ringgits.

On arrival at the hotel, you walk up the steps on to a huge open hall with seating areas in the centre, coffee shop on the right and the reception on the left; and the sea view greets you as you walk in to the hall. At different times of the year, you can be greeted by traditional native dancers performing a welcoming Iban routine.

All staff speaks English in the hotel, and the checking in at reception is reasonable quick and prompt where you will need to provide your passports, hotel vouchers and fill in a guest form. You will need to provide a credit card deposit for any hotel expenses as a standard procedure.
There are two types of accommodation at Miri Marriott hotel, i.e. the pool and sea view rooms on the main block of the hotel with balcony and the chalet styled rooms on either side of the main building. We usually stay at the chalets which have more characters. The chalets are on two floors, first and ground floor. The room has both garden and some sea view depending on which wing you stay. It has a huge double bed, dressing table, coffee table, wardrobe, mini fridge and a bathroom with toilet and a bath with overhead shower. The room is good size, comfortable and very clean. It is cleaned daily and the maid leaves 2 small bottles of water, compliment of the hotel each day. Outside the double patio window, there is a small decking area for the ground floor rooms with a table and 2 chairs where you can sit outside so wish (balcony for upper floor rooms). There are clean white towels and toiletries in the bathroom.
To access the chalets, you will need to go down a flight of stairs and walk to the rooms and the different wings are named after flowers. There is a lift to the rooms in the main block.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are in the restaurant situated in the lower ground floor. Breakfast buffet is fantastic where you are spoilt for choice. You can choose from continental breakfast of cereal , bread and a variety of cakes; English or American breakfast of small sausages, baked beans, sautéed potatoes, grill meat counter and freshly prepared eggs; fresh fruits and juices, coffee and tea; and Malaysia breakfast consisting of congee (rice porridge) with condiments, fried noodles, curry, vegetables, steamed “pau” (steamed buns) and “siu mai” (steamed prawn or chicken dumplings) and best of all, you can select your own ingredients to make up your own noodle soup with a choice of vegetable, chicken or beef soup. The waiting staff is friendly and attending. We get to know some of them especially the long service ones, for example, Jane who is so helpful. You can choose from the ala carte menu or the buffet for your lunch and dinner.

For those who wish to relax after a meal, you can go to the bar for a few drinks or cocktails. There is live music played in the bar depending on the seasons of the year.

Downstairs opposite the restaurant, you will find the “Mandara” spa where you relaxing Balinese facials, manicure, pedicure and massage treatments are provided at reasonable prices. Ladies or gents, you should try to sample a session here – just bliss.

The Coffee show in the arrival hall provides coffee, tea and drinks and a variety of cheese cakes.

The swimming pool is on the ground level and garden. Sun loungers are plentiful, and you can collect your beach towels from the pool staff. There is a children pool and both pools are clean and lovely. A loving facility is the pool bar where you can either swim up and order and enjoying your favourite drinks without getting out of the pool; or you can sit around the pool area or in the relaxing reading area putting your tiring feet up on large sofas and enjoying your drinks, listening to the sea waves lashing against the stone walls along the hotel ground. The sea view is beautiful and the hotel does not have its own beach, however, if you walk a few hundred metres left of the hotel; you will find a long stretch of light brown sandy beach – the Tanjong Lobang beach.

There are some beach stalls where you get some drinks or food, however I must say that these stalls are now limited and only temporary as there is a huge construction work going on next to the Miri Marriott hotel, of 3 condominiums nearby and there is no worry about noise.

The hotel has a conference and meeting room facilities on site, a small business centre where you can use their internet facility at 21 Ringgits for half an hour web time.

There is a fitness centre on the adjourning lower ground floor of the hotel to work off a few sweat and lovely foods in Miri.

We love returning to the same hotel each year as it is one of the best hotels in Miri.

If you should visit Miri, you will not regret staying at the Miri Marriott hotel.

I stayed for one week there and invited friends to joing as well.
Pros: rooms are tidy, huge pool which my kids really enjoyed, 2 tennis courts, friendly personnel, very good breakfast buffet.
Cons: rooms are a bit small for deluxe, for some reason ground floor rooms do not have carpets and it's cold to walk on the floor at times. Gym and sauna are also tiny and always occupied by locals and smelly. The sauna is off for a day and only switched just when you ask about it, so it didn't heat up when we went there although we warned 1 hour in advance. Both showers in the sauna were malfunctional which is a shame for such a hotel. There is no beach. Also, the hotel is a bit away from the town, so either you use limited shuttles or take a taxi. Miri itself is pretty boring it took only two days to see all local attractions.
To sum up, the place is good for business visitors/one night stopover. Not really even a beach holiday place.

Room Tip: ground floor rooms have no carpets so select first floor ones.

My family and i decided to stay there on a recent trip, first up, the rooms are small, bathroom smaller than average. The food is bordering on average also. They serve a Sarawak laksa which is way over priced and nowhere good enough to say it's good. Breakfast was ok nothing exceptional. The best parts of the hotel were The Pool which is very big and good for the kids, The Gym although i didn't use it was very good also.
The staff are very friendly but this place is only good if you want to just sit by the pool and relax all day. There really isn't much else to do there and it's not within walking distance to anything really. I wouldn't be going there next time unless i want to sit back and relax.
