After a 1.9 km walk along well kept boardwalks, through the rain forest you finally reach the Niah caves. What a site greets you, a series of caves finally opening to a huge cave in which at night swifts roost and during the day bats hang from the roof. Unfortunately we went at the wrong tome to experience the bats leaving the cave in the evening, they do so in a big black cloud which we are told is spectacular. You definitely need to take a supply of water as it can be quite warm on the walk to and from. We took some sandwiches which we ate in the cave. You willaslo need a torch if you intend to walk right around the cave which is pitch black even in the daytime. Very definitly a worthwhile visit.

“I love it!”
Reviewed March 26, 2014 via mobile

The journey are great with magnificent views. Before reach the cave, you need to walk about an hour on a easy track. Hundreds of plant species and rock formations will amaze you along the track. Once you reach at the Niah Cave, make sure you walk through the cave until the painted cave.

Remember to bring a good headlight/torchlight because there is no light inside the cave except on a few spots. Also, wear a good shoe because it is quite slippery at the path and a bottle of drink, or a few since it will take you about 4 hours walk.

But for the management team of niah national park, please take serious action on maintenance at the entrance and few spots at the cave paths.

Enjoy your journey to the cave!

“Great Experience for Day Trip”
Reviewed March 21, 2014

It is a good experience to explore the caves for day trip.

Met up with 3 lovely friends and as we shared one private vehicle arranged by Mrs Lee of Dillenia Guest House.

It is a long walk of about 40 minutes from the Park HQ to the first cave-Traders Cave. If you haven’t stock up your drinking water, you got a chance to replenish/quench your thirst half way through the journey to first caves as there is a stall selling drinking water & souvenirs.

Moon cave is the best. It is in complete darkness .You have to be “brave” enough to walk through it (with a good torchlight) in order for you to reach Painting Cave.

Be physically fit as it is about 4 hours++ walk for the whole journey to the caves & back to Park HQ, but worth it. Also, it is always a good practice to carry some biscuits or sandwiches & water as this will be very handy when you need it.

“Well worth the effort!”
Reviewed March 18, 2014

The family and I thoroughly enjoyed this easy walking wander into the caves. Lots of butterflies, unusual trees, fantastic caves, informative signboards, and friendly ladies at the small drinks/souvenirs stalls.

The only downside was that there was no water (!) in the headquarter's toilets. A sign mentioned this...just bizarre...2nd worst toilets I've seen after the transit lounge in the New Delhi Airport...my wife dry retched.
Surely this should be a priority?!

“beautiful caving experience”

I liked that the trails have already been established, the possibility of getting lost is remote. The Great Cave and painted cave are beautiful
