This is a fairly modern hotel. However it is geared for groups as the activities are mostly team orientated. There are 40 rooms, and when I was there I was the only guest, I was so BORED. The meals were set, the same for breakfast, lunch and dinner. On my last night I was actually asked if I wanted dinner. Bear in mind, this resort is miles from anywhere. Where was I to go? The staff restaurant? wanted to go home early. The desk staff were friendly enough. The room was small and the bathroom flooded when I got a shower. To get hot water I had to run it for about 10 minutes, What a waste. The only thing I liked was the room was set amongst the treetops. The double rooms seemed to be much larger.

We have stayed at this Resort for 3 nights, 26th – 29th of October 2009. The Resort is situated in a beautiful area surrounded by old pristine forest. There is a main brick built part with normal hotel rooms and there are wooden Chalets on stilts at the waterfront (pond front), we booked the Meranti Chalet Accomodation with view onto the River (pond). You get to the chalets on a plank walk.
Only a short ride to Lambir Hills Nat. Park & about 1 h ride to Niah Caves in Niah Park. Only 30 min. to Miri Town & Miri Airport.

The Resort has got a Restaurant (no aircon) in the Rainforest where they serve BF,L,D one night when there were just to many mosquitos around (open air restaurant) the staff were friendly enough to bring our dinner to our Chalet. However, in the main Building they have a big airconditioned Restaurant with views out to the forest and lovely patio areas which was only open one morning to serve BF, this might be for VIP Guests ? There is a big reception area overlooking the lovely forest, where you could sit down with a drink in the evenings I guess, but when we were there, the hotel was not staffed at the reception most of the times.

The Resort offers an introductional and included tour of the Resort & a Night Safari Drive which we were never offered. I guess this is because we were the only guests in the Resort. When we inquired about the night Safari we were told that there is no point, all we would see is Rats and Bats, there was no misunderstanding because we had asked our lovely guide to inquire for us, all they said is that they could “assist” us on a night walk. If you stay in the Chalets down the “River” you will have to climb up a very steep hill or 5 big flights of stairs and a hill to come to the Restaurant, so if you are not good by foot, do not book this accomodation type, all the time we stayed at the Resort the Lift up to the Hotel was not working.

If you are keen on walking – there are a lot of trails for you to explore but do not expect to see many bird species or any other animals.
They offer a lot of team building sessions and boat rides in their brochures but we were also never offered any of these activities – would probably not make much sense with 2 persons only.
There is no pool at the hotel. Our Itinerary included: “hop on a unique farm trailer or on board of a river boat to see the surroundings” – since our flight from the UK was delayed by 6 hours we arrived late and this was never offered, not even a day later or so.

BF, L and Dinner:
consisted out of the same food really, - 3 Salads, fried noodles, chicken sausages, french fries, fried egg, sweet & sour fish, beef jerky in dark sauce, green vegatable type, beans, crispy chicken, sweet cakes as a dessert. I ordered a Coca Cola at the first night and wanted to take one to my room but there was only the one can available and I had that with my dinner….
There was no coffee or tea offered for BF – you had to ask for it, they never offered.
There should have been buffet style meals but they did not bother to do the buffet for 2 persons only.
Over All: The quality of the food was not acceptable but did not bother us to much.

Rooms:
I can only comment on the Meranti Chalet, the Chalet was spacious, clean and fitted out with Ceiling Fan, Air Con, Fridge, Tea & Coffee making facility, TV, functional Shower Room. There are 2 x 0.5 ltr. Bottles of complementary water for you in the fridge to use, but they were not replaced daily so you better find a supermarket on one of your trips to buy some water for your stay.

Staff:
The staff were very friendly and welcoming but only the reception desk lady (one of them) speaks english. Check in was easy but at Check out there was no staff available to pick up our suitcases from the room (remember the 5 flights of stairs and steep walk – lift not working) so they asked our guide to drive up there to pick the luggage up for them ! Most of the time there was nobody at the reception desk.

Trips:
We have been to see the Niah Bat/Swiftlet Caves which was a very interesting trip, 3 km plank walk to the caves and then explored the inside of the cave. Well worth seeing.
We walked to the small Waterfall in Lambir Hill Nat Park – beautiful area and a nice walk, you can go for a swim at the waterfall if you like, there are changing rooms/toilets etc.
Miri Town Tour was very nice as well due to our friendly guide, he has shown us the local market, a handy craft shop, the taoist temple, the first oil well in Miri and the town plaza where people meet to hang out. The guide spoke fluent english and was well educated, which made the experience even better.

Comment: 2 nights would have been enough in this place to see everything the area offers. The Resort is set out for team building sessions booked by companies and big groups of people rather then european couples or families. To me personally it seamed to be set for chinese/asian groups of visitors.

My husband and I stayed at the Tropical Rainforest Resort to attend the Treehouse Rock Festival held on its premises. While there, we went on a free tour of the resorts premises and stayed in one of the rooms in the main building. Overall I'd say the accommodation itself is well maintained. The staff were very polite and efficient and made us feel welcome as did the manager when we heard him speak at the beginning of the concert. We were given 2 single beds which were quite large, clean and comfortable.

There was a focus on safety for guests wandering around the resort that was quite good, especially for those with children.
Anyone expecting a western idea of eco-tourism will have to relax their standards a bit. The animal feature of the resort needed some maintenance. However, the guide running the tour was very informative and responsive to questions about the local flora and fauna.

The food at the cafe was average as was breakfast which is held in quite attractive surrounds but marred by a large TV playing a looped tape of an advert for the resort which competes with the loud background music.

Overall the resort provides good accommodation for the low price and I'd recommend it on that basis.

There is a wonderful new resort that we discovered this summer about 30-40 minutes outside of Miri, Sarawak on the island of Borneo called the Borneo Tropical Rainforest Resort. The atmosphere is much more "eco-lodge" than Club Med. It had by far the best service of any place throughout the world where we have stayed, at a fraction of the cost. Staff were friendly and attentive to our every need, endeavoring to make our stay as pleasant as possible. There are a wide range of accomodations, from a large, air-conditioned bunk-bed hostel, to an attractive hotel, and finally to a number of lovely wooden chalets of various sizes surrounded by rainforest. We opted for a two-bedroom, two bath wooden chalet, for ourselves and our two young children. Throughout our 3-night stay there, we only saw a handful of other travellers

We also chose the inclusive meal option, and found the food to be bountiful and delicious, as well as consisting of many local dishes that we had not had elsewhere. We had no less than 3 meat entrees at every meal, plus numerous side dish selections served family style. Entertainment at the hundreds of acres resort included guided tours of their fruit farm and farm animals, hikes through the rainforest, basketball, table tennis, and low and high ropes courses with a zipline. Prices were extremely reasonable as well.

The resort is centrally located on a good two-lane main road (the Miri-Bintulu highway) from Miri continuing on to the Niah caves. Since there is no public transportation currently from Miri to the caves, the resort is ideally located. We rented a car in Miri and drove to the resort/Niah easily, which allowed for a pleasant day trip to the caves. The resort is directly beside the Lambir Hills National Park as well, but as it is so pretty itself, we did not actually make it to Lambir Hills. We highly recommend this place, as it is ideal for anyone ranging from the single traveller, to families with children, and also for large groups.
