Arrived in the evening of 9 June at the Sandakan hotel for 5 nights. It is a big hotel, having a high standard. My room at third floor was very good, large, very clean, having all the necessary amenities (TV, fridge, coffee maker etc). Only 2 small windows can be opened (I always like accommodations where i can open large the windows), the view was over a street - nothing special. I had a good sleep in that large bed but the noise form the air-con was disturbing over night. Interesting that the second night the noise wasn't any more so disturbing - maybe I got used. The room door uses an electronic key. The hotel has a large restaurant. for breakfast they offer a rich and very tasty buffet. Actually during my Sabah travel the best breakfast - buffet was at the Hotel Sandakan!. As the hotel is located right in the center, it is easy to go around and as we had a car, it is a good starting point to make different day trips. A good place to spend some time is the English tea house, in the middle of a wonderful garden,. overlooking the bay. Close to that is Agnes Keith House - she wrote the best seller about Sabah "Land Below the wind" - I was lucky to find the book in a bookshop in Kota Kinabalu.. There are few Chinese temples in Sandakan worth for visiting for their beautiful architecture - for example the Puh Jih Shih Temple, also the Buli Sim Sim watervillage is interesting. Also it is close to the Sepilok Onragutan Center - which, sincerely, didn't impressed me much, then there is a crocodile farm, but more instructive is the War Memorial Park. I made also a day trip to BatuTulug caves - bats and ancient coffins, from the top of the rock there is a fantastic view of the surroundings and the most interesting day trip was to the Kinabatangan river for the cruise - beside proboscis monkeys, macacs and water birds, I was lucky to spot a little herd of pigmy elephants grassing near the water. Of course in Sandakan town itself you don't have much to do many days, but the Hotel Sandakan is a good starting point to explore the surroundings. I can only highly recommend this hotel.

we stayed here for one night. it's located on the hill above the town so a cab or 2km walk is needed to get to the centre. very good sized rooms and a great rate. free internet and great pool. not too touristic. alcohol needs to be consumed outside the a/c restaurant which is not a huge inconvenience.

Friendly staff, decent Wifi in the room, noisy aircon in my room, standard Malaysian breakfast buffet. No real complaints.

Good location. Friendly very helpful staff. Service excellent. We found this great value for money. It was advertised to us as 4 star and everything about it goes with this until you get to the room which was very dated. Faded, fraying carpets, furniture, linen and smelt rather of cigarette smoke. In serious need of updating but otherwise this place was safe, friendly and good value. Would stay there again.

My family and I stayed here for 6 nights in 2 Deluxe room. We have visited Sandakan at least 8 times because my Dad is from Sandakan. It is our second time staying at the Sandakan Hotel. Unlike the Sabah Hotel, Hotel Sandakan is located in Sandakan Town (and during the period we stayed here, was unusually more expensive than the Sabah Hotel). Its proximity to the town centre is very convenient - there are cafes, restaurants, shops, supermarket, banks and the local market.

Check-in was efficient. The lobby was small but the lobby staff are very professional, courteous and efficient. They responded to all my requests promptly. For example, we forgot to remove a mobile phone in our in-room safe. We rang up the hotel from Kota Kinabalu airport and after giving them our pin, they were able to retrieve the mobile and then pass it onto one of our relatives also staying in the hotel.

The rooms were spacious and the beds large (2 double beds per room). It was clear that the bathroom and floor were renovated (the floor was wooden), and that the paint was fresh. My room rate included daily complimentary bottled water and wireless Internet. It also included breakfast daily for 4 people at Palm Cafe. The food at breakfast was nice some days and not so nice on other days because the food choice changed everyday. The service at the Palm Cafe was warm.

I highly recommend this hotel and in future, we will stay here again.

Stayed one night here before exploring the wildlife hotspots. the hotel and rooms are basic and need refurbishing. That said, the staff were delightful and the place was spotless. We had breakfast and lunch there and both meals were excellent. The grounds and forested views were really lovely and well kept. Apparently they are building a Sheraton in Sandakan. This hotel could easily be a good alternative but some money has to be spent. Free Wi Fi which was nice, better than top Singapore hotels can manage! We will stay again next time

We spent 5D4N at Hotel Sandakan after our 2N stay at Grand Borneo - KK. Hotel Sandakan makes you feel warm although this is a hotel with long history. We stay here once every 2 years whenever we are having family reunion.
Effectient service (although sometime lack of smile), huge room size with double-double bed, great location, Chinese Restaurant on 1/F is good. However their breakfast is really terrible. Wifi works fine both in lobby and guest rooms.
Go to the Indian Roti shop just opposite the hotel which you can get nice all day meal.
There is a nice bakery name 'Fat Cat Cake Shop' just one street down which you can fill up your stomach.
A few blocks on hotel right hand side (5-8 mins walk), you can find a nice seafood restaurant on 1/F, the same location of 'Sandakan Fishing Association'. Their tiger prawn is super huge and cheap.
One reminder is go and buy bottle water at that Indian roti shop since the hotel tap water is yellow in color.

Room Tip: Get rooms on upper floor and you can enjoy the city and sea view.
