“Very good value”
Reviewed January 4, 2013

We did not have any problems with the staff, in fact, they went even beyond helpful by always asking if we needed anything. On our wait to the Rainforest Discovery Center, they even provided a self made map for us (as we had our own transportation). The room was spacious and clean, the swimming pool was nice too. For the price I think it was a very decent stay.

Despite of bad reviews about the reception staff and rooms, i think the reception staff were very friendly. My room was a standard room, during check in i asked a pool view room and i stayed in a lovely room, all the hotel smells damp but Sandakan is a very rainy place, in the middle of the rainforest. i didnt expect the smell of roses!
My room was very large with two double beds, both shower and bathtub areas. Both bed and pillows are comfy to me. Wifi signal was sometimes weak but when i sat next to the door i was able to pick better signal. I didnt need to go downstairs to connect internet.
There was a lovely cafe with delicious looking cakes near the reception area. I only saw families and decent people there. I felt safe. Ladies in travel agency were very well mannered and cheerful.
Cleaning was perfect, they never disturbed me and they worked quick and efficiently, they were almost invisible.
I didn't taste their breakfast but i am sure it is decent.
Only down side was i had a coolbox in my room i would have preferred a mini fridge, and there was no safebox, telly was old fashion. But when i walked around the city, i had a chance to have a look at the other hotels. City is not the best city i have ever been, it is very dirty with full of teenagers, they behave like thinner addicts, calling you and shouting at you. Considering that there is a very limited night life, this hotel had a perfect location, lively lobby area, not in the city but within the walking distance, Close to agnes Keith house.
I would definetely stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a pool view room.

On the web this looked like a good bet, a little way out of Sandakan, but seemed to have all we needed. On arrival we found the reception to be very surly and unwelcoming...not a good start. When will reception staff learn that the first 30 seconds of arrival create the impression that will stay with the guest! we were only there for two days so whatever passed would soon be a memory.
Breakfast was OK, we ate out in town in the evenings and had a fantastic seafood dinner at the stilt village.
We were told there was not a bar, OK as it is muslim, then later found guests being served with beer etc in the lounge.
The room was good and we enjoyed the pool area.

Apart from the rock hard ( seriously!) beds this was a lovely place to stay with great service, friendly staff and a great gym.
The pool was fantastic - great for sitting by when relaxing. Breakfast reasonable and food ok but quite pricey by local standards.
A lot of renovations going on still with 2 restaurants still out of action.
Nice walk down hill to town but don't try walking back up in the heat of the day!
Overall a pleasant stay!

Room Tip: We chose an Executive Suite which gave a separate lounge which was needed for our longer stay. Try g...

We stayed one night on our way to the jungle at Kinabatangan. I liked the reception area and the pool is amazing ! The first room we were taken to was a smoking room and I asked if we could be moved. The second room was a bit better, but had quite a musty smell - (I have a very sensitive sense of smell). The staff were friendly and helpful, and we were delighted that there was free wifi around the place.. downstairs. It has an old colonial feel about the place. There was an abundance of food in the restaurant downstairs, although it was really busy - a lot of variety.
We sat outside and enjoyed the pool view. We also took a room for the day on our way back from the jungle, prior to getting on the long flight back home - we used the pool and restaurant. Nice views from the rooms looking into the jungle or onto the pool.

Having read the reviews on this hotel I was a little sceptical.

The hotel is fabulous, 10 minutes from town, WONDERFUL staff, couldn't do enough for me - I stayed for a portion of my trip on my own and they were all very helpful and kind and provided excellent advice for me.

The hotel is going through renovation, the rooms are spacious and clean.

The food is DELICIOUS with a good variety of choice, breakfast good, dinner nice.

The location is great for a stay to visit Sepilok, the War Memorial, Turtle Islands (a must see), proboscis monkeys, Sandakan market and more.

I have fallen in love with Borneo and WILL BE BACK!

Room Tip: Higher floors in the main hotel are better, hotel is being renovated so I can;t wait to see what thi...
