“Beautiful Hotel, shame about the location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 27, 2011

Pulling in to the hotel was a lovely break from the rest of Sandakan... Being such a big tourist hub for wildlife holidays we did expect a lot more of Sandakan, however if you did want to take a walk in to the town from the hotel it is quite a long return trip (I would recommend walking to town but not in the dark and getting a taxi back).

The hotel is absolutely gorgeous from the building itself and the rainforest grounds down to the swimming pool and rooms. However it was a shame that we were not able to enjoy their nature trail as it was shut (although we recognise that this was out of their control following a land slide)... Although it was still possible to see some really nice fauna around the pool and grounds.

The restaurant served very nice food, especially in the buffet lunch we had on one day, and even though it was very quiet (we were the only people in there) the main bar was very comfortable with very strong cocktails!

Plus Sides -

Very clean
Good sized swimming pool
Has a very remote feel to it
A few nice shops

Down Sides -

Pool towels had to be borrowed from the fitness club where there were no attendants and the towels smelt very damp and musky
Shower door in our room was broken
Rooms look outdated (especially the controls for the television and air conditioning)

All though this is one of the first hotels in Sandakan and the rooms are a little tired, it is in a fantastic location surrounded by the tropical rain forest. The rooms are reasonably sized and has a separate shower stall and bathtub with shower.

The good thing was they had a very nice free form swimming pool with jacuzzi and a slide. Gym was fully equipped but equipment had seen better days. Staffs were generally friendly and obliging whenever request for additional service was given

Had a buffet breakfast and dinner in The Plantation Cafe. The breakfast spread was reasonable with the usual breakfast fare, eggs and what I liked was the freshly made dim sum

Room Tip: Choose a room facing the pool which overlooks the rain forest. The other side of the hotel faces the...

The hotel although "matured", has it's charms. It is a hotel I frequent for work and has always been a pleasant stay. It is located in a mature part of Sandakan with lots of nice big trees, ideal for all who wants to experience the rainforest. A good place for some R&R after visiting the various eco-tourism spots in the Sandakan area. The rooms are clean and comfortable although some may need some refurbishments. I do particularly like the rooms with the wooden shades that blocks out the sun, instead of fabric curtains. The hotel has a nice free form swimming pool with a mini slide for kids and a pretty decent gym. As for the food and beverage, the coffee house serves decent coffee house food at a reasonable price, while the chinese restaurant has very nice dim sum. The lounge has a few "signature" cocktails that are worth trying, all at reasonable prices. The other good thing is "free" wifi internet throughout the hotel. It is a very comfortable hotel for me and I hope the management will keep up the good work.

While I agree that some aspects of the Sabah Hotel may be getting “tired” (as mentioned in earlier reviews), however, considering the other choices in Sandakan, I was totally willing to overlook the fatigue. Honestly, it was more the soft furnishings that needed attention and were getting a little worn. We made use of the recreational facilities (both the gym and the pool), and had massages (which were fantastic), and ate our 3 meals of the day in the Plantation Cafe. The breakfast buffet offered a huge selection of food to please every possible palate, and they had various themed food nights to please most people.

The pool was a great place to unwind, and we enjoyed the late afternoon cocktails in our swimming costumes before going upstairs to prepare for dinner. The only negative was that it took quite some time for the drinks order to arrive, but when on holidays, the only real hurry should be determined by how thirsty you are!

We found a last minute online deal directly with the hotel, so we found it to be excellent value for money (even upgraded to junior suite). It was a corner room, so it was very spacious, and the marble bathroom was huge, including the shower!

I would recommend this hotel to anyone, and would certainly stay here again.

Room Tip: If you can afford an upgrade, go for it.

We chose the Sabah Hotel because of it's unique location surrounded by lush rainforest and the views from our 6th floor room were stunning to look out over the canopy.

We stayed 3 nights before and 2 nights after our highly recommended "Borneo Eco 4-Day Tour" and loved our large, cool, comfortable and very clean room. The spacious bathroom had a full size bath and a great shower. The buffet breakfast was delicious with plenty of variety, the meals at the Plantation Cafe and Ming Chinese Restaurant were excellent. Treat yourself to a fancy cake and drink whilst you relax in the Lobby Lounge.

The friendly and helpful staff can assist you in arranging transport to all the local attractions like the Sepilok Orangutan Centre, the Rainforest Discovery Centre, the Memorial Park, the stilt water village and the "not-to-be-missed experience" Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary.

The Sabah Hotel is a great base for day trips and to be able to return after a long hot day in the tropical heat and enjoy a cool refreshing swim in the pool caps off a perfect day.

Just a short stroll from the hotel you can visit Sandakan town and the waterfront seafood alfresco cafes. Even closer is the Agnes Keith House and conveniently located next door is the wonderful English Tea House for delicious meals, snacks and drinks. Sit outside under the large shady trees and absorb the great views of Sandakan Harbour.

We loved our stay and will return to the Sabah Hotel when we next visit Sabah.

Rooms were a bit dated but location was good, pool area great food very good. The assistance from the tourist shop was especially good. I would go back to this hotel ... it was very good value.

We stayed here for the second time this year and this time we bought two of our children who stayed in the room next to us. They loved the pool, the food and the locality. There are wonderful choices for eating in the hotel and breakfast is superb. Our rooms were big, clean, cool and comfortable. The hotel is just out of Sandakan and a good base for travelling to the attractions in the region.
We hired a car from JC car rental and he was very well priced and excellent value. He delivered the car on the same day as we phoned and made our day. It is easy to drive to Sepilok to see the orangutans and Labuk Bay for the proboscis monkeys which are amazing.
The pool at Sabah Hotel is big and very clean with a waterfall. Great to cool off and wonderful to have a swim in the evening.
