This restaurant is open during the day and evening but its best to go in the evening due to different chef cooking and it tastes better in the evening, seriously. Fresh coconut drinks are a must apart from the seafood. Bon appetite.

Great big and bustling Chinese-Malaysian fresh fish restaurant in the Sim Sim village in Sandakan, built on wooden poles into the sea. There is no menu, you order based on what fish you like with a choice of preparation styles. We had excellent grilled squid, garlic prawns and a delicious sweet and sour grouper. Great breezy location overlooking the sea.

My experience there wasn't the best, but I understand why it's highly recommended.

(My visit was at night time, reserved a table at 7pm)

The food is good, with a wide variety of seafood. BUT the service was so-so, the food came out one at a time (wasn't a proper dinner at all) and was at small portions eventhough there were 14 of us. All the food had good taste, but we were just disappointed with the slowness of the dishes that were served.

If you are going to dine there, please reserve a table beforehand because that place is always packed!!

Also, if you have children, please bring along jackets as the wind from the sea is very strong there at night. It's very chilly!

P/s: it is opened from 6.30am to 3.30pm and from 5.30pm to 9.30pm. It serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. [I have only tried out dinner so is unable to comment on the other two :) ]

It's a good place for first time visits to Sandakan.

16 of us went here. Looks like it was potentially going to be awesome, freshest seafood n fish that is still alive when u place ur order. Our first dish of chicken wings came. Looks amazing but it wasn't cook. Told someone about this n they said if we can pick up the bits we have ate then they can coom it again, instead of giving us a feesh batch. Then the fish came. By this point we are all quite hungry. Fish was raw inside. Could have killed someone. Sent that back and SPECIFICALLY said we do not want the fish to be cooked twice. Same fish came back cooked. Horribly cooked. Killed the freshness. Tough as anything. Servers were incredibly rude amd shout if we ask anything. One dripped hot sauce down my grannys back. When it came to the bill. They said they have apologised in a really rude way and asked what elsr they can do? As if we owe them! absolutely disgusted by the servers' behaviour and the food cost a bomb!! AND undercooked!! After arguing for a while we got given the money back for rhe chicken and that was it. Not been so disappointed in a while.

Apologies for the long essay but I had to get everything down...

After taking on board the opinions of others on this website, which has this restaurant rated as #1 in Sandakan, we thought (myself and 4 friends) that for our last night in Sandakan we'd have dinner here.
When we arrived (7pm) we were sat quickly, in a seating area which is nice (a little breezy at times), but had a good, vibrant atmosphere. Our waiter at first was very attentive taking us up to the fish tanks and suggesting what would be good and what sauces we'd like with our dishes etc...
We ordered:
1) 2 crabs with sweet and sour sauce, 1 side dish of spinach
2) prawns with ginger, garlic and chilli sauce
3) vegetable dish
4) fried fish with chilli sauce, 1 crab with sweet and sour sauce and prawns with chilli, garlic and ginger.
5) 1 lobster steamed in garlic and prawns with garlic and chilli sauce, 1 side dish of spinach

Our drinks order was shortly taken after that and the service for those was reasonably quick.

From previous reviews we were aware that service can be quite slow, but that seems to be the norm and everybody else seemed to be patient, therefore when the first dish (which was delicious: fried whole fish with a chilli sauce) came out at approximately 7.30pm we were hopeful the next dishes would arrive shortly after.....
At about 7.45pm the next batch of dishes came out: crab, 2 x prawns, 1 side dish of spinach.
The 3 of us were enjoying our dishes, but the other 2 were still waiting....
The waiter stopped by our table at about 8.15pm to check we were ok with everything and we said yes, but we were still waiting for 1 crab, prawns, vegetables and a spinach side dish. When we mentioned the vegetable dish he put his hand to his head to suggest he'd forgotten about them. He then checked my friend’s plate who had crab and asked him how many he'd had, to which it was revealed that they had brought out 2 peoples orders on 1 plate (3 crabs)!

At 8.30pm, after waiting a full hour after one part of his order (the fish) and 15 minutes of enquiring where our other dishes were, my partner went over to the waiter to have a quiet word about the fact that himself and somebody had been waiting for a long time, in fact the other person hadn't had a thing to eat yet! The waiter did apologise and said it wouldn't be long.
The waiter returned to the table about 8.40pm and said the food wouldn't be long. At this point my friends said that they won't be paying for the dishes that hadn't come out yet due to it taking such a long time. The waiter became very angry at us and basically implied that we would be paying as we had ordered it! The rest of us also became involved and explained about the time we had waited (quite patiently), but also the fact we had to find him, to chase our order.
Anyway, about 20 minutes later the rest of the order arrived well, except for the crab and spinach side dish! The food was ok.

So, 2 hours and 20 minutes after arriving we went off to pay. We checked with the waiter that he had deducted the vegetable dish and prawns from the bill. But again the waiter became very aggressive and refused to do so stating that we have every right to refuse the food, but once it's delivered to the table we must pay!
My partner agreed that because the prawns were good he would pay for those; however we were not paying for vegetables that should’ve really only taken 10 minutes to cook, NOT 1 hour and 45 minutes!!!
The waiter's response to this was 'it is the system's fault', i.e. he can't control the kitchen's speed, which we understood, but we were not paying for the dish for the reason above. Then his response was incredible.... he asked if she'd eaten it! His thought process for this comment was: if she has eaten it then she should pay for it! Of course she bloody ate it, she was hungry! Furthermore he then went on to ask 'in your country do you refuse to pay after you've eaten?!'
Was this guy for real??? He clearly had missed the point!
This went on for a while, and his attitude was terrible!!!!
Eventually he backed down and took the vegetables off of the bill, all of RM8 (1pound 60p)!!

So basically, my opinion of this restaurant is this: This service was an absolute joke, and this experience with the waiter was such a shame as it certainly cast a dark shadow over the quality of the food, which was actually pretty good!
Thus, if you want good food, but are prepared to wait for a long time, and also chase up the waiters to check they have taken your order properly and that you will actually be receiving your food… this is the place for you!!!
